the event of tragedy, something
positive can always come up,†Tim
Conley, computer and gifted teacher
and varsity track coach at Bloom
Vernon Local School District stated,
when explaining the inspiration for the
first annual Run for Riley.
Riley Johnson was a sixth grader
who died last year in a tragic accident.
Riley was the son of South Webster
High School principal Bob Johnson
and Bloom-Vernon Elementary School
guidance counselor Kenya Johnson.
The weekend of September 6 marked
the anniversary of Riley’s death.
After the tragic loss of their son, the
Johnsons decided they wanted to do
something positive in memory of their
son. As a result the Riley Johnson
Legacy Fund was created to raise
scholarship money for South Webster
graduates. The first scholarships from
the fund will be handed out to Riley’s
graduating class, now seventh
graders, in 2014. A committee has
been selected to handle the funds who
will develop a criteria for recipients
when their graduations near.
Run for Riley will be a 5K run/walk
that will take place on October 14,
starting at 6 p.m. Participants are
asked to make a $12 donation, which
will include their entry fee, as well as a
Run for Riley T-shirt. Runners will start
at Bloom-Vernon Elementary School.
The course will continue throughout
South Webster and end back where it
started.
Conley says he would like to see the
event bring in between $2,000 and
$3,000. However, sponsors have yet to
be lined up. “I’ll take whatever we can
get,†he said with enthusiasm.
For more information on participation
or to sponsor the event, contact Tim
Conley at Bloom Vernon Elementary
School at (740) 778-2339 or by calling
his cell at (740) 250-3632.

I hope this brings a lot of runners out. It sounds like some athletes from other sports at Webster will be out running/walking to support this wonderful cause in memory of a wonderful boy.

Wonderful turnout at the "Run for Riley". I've heard there were 616 total runners and walkers. Wonderful evening, wonderful event, for a wonderful young boy that is missed daily by all.
