Panther, I know that was the year of the coaching change but it took a couple of years to really start winning on a consistant basis. I think Bobby was right, it probably was about 1985. Anyway, it would be great to see it get back to that again. I hope the new coach can have some success, but I kind of have some doubts. I would like to see someone who really knows what kind of tradition Green used to have. It would take one of those 2 coaches who enjoyed all of that success or maybe a player from one of those great teams who knows how to coach. But, back to the subject, I remember alot of bigger schools coming to Franklin Furnace and leaving with a loss. That was great!!

You are probably right about the year, however Mr.Hughes was a winner when he arrived there. The great teams at Wheelersburg will atest to that.

As a former player for Coach Hughes, I totally agree. He is a winner.

Whiteoak's old gym is silly small. Bleachers that might hold 200 if the ball teams were set up on the other side in chairs. The court is maybe 60 feet long (reminds me of games seen on Fresh Prince of Bellaire)

and yes, Coach Smalley vividly recalls his masterful performance in this very gym....as he will remind you every chance he gets! lol

You want good old gyms how bout Rarden, Otway, Union and Morgan back before northwest had a middle school and elementary made in the mid 90's....forget west and portsmouth and all these rivalries now...back in those days when any of these four teams played eachother it was said to be a fierce battle.....but i never got to go to one of these schools so i've just heard stories :122249 !

Hammerdown Green played in the disbanded Tri-County League w/ Peebles, Eastern Pike, South Webster, Western Latham, and Portsmouth Clay.
All-time athlete mentioned the old school rivalries and he/she is dead on accurate. Old Franklin high school in Locust Grove, Winchester, Sinking Spring, these gyms are a disappearing breed but produced some memorable games.

Waterford would be a major pick back in the day that old gym would fill up so far that they would have to cut people off. And tough to play in that place would really rock. :!: :!: :!: :!: :!:

By 1985 and several years prior, Green had joined the SOC I. I think they were in it by the time Hughes got to Green. Can't remember the year they joined the SOC but it was definitely prior to Green's major winning started. I always loved all the signs hanging in the gym as well as the old timers on the wall by the doors.

the old gym at whiteoak used to have bleachers on both sides and bleachers on the stage. the scorers table was in a crow's nest above the bleachers.

I played for Hannan Trace from 89-92. The gym floor was awesome. They will be making plaques and selling them for a fundraiser for the athletic program. They will prolly be around 50.00 or so.

Whiteoak's Old Gym just got a shiny new coat of finish put on it today and new black mats up all around. Still doesn't look bad for an old gym. We still practice in it and have pee wee tourneys in it as well.

With Logan getting a new one I would say The Katie is one of the best old ones.

I still love Oak Hill's old gym. I am one of the few that wish we still played there.

I believe Green joined the SOC when it split into two divisions for the 79-80 school year. That would be one year before Mr.Hughes was hired.

This could be the last year for the gym at South Gallia (Hannan Trace). The floor is different than most that I have ever seen. The place provides a great atmosphere and is loud. I know the new gym will be nice but just are a few things that will be missed from the old gym. I will miss the Bat Cave. ;-)

Jumper, I hope you are right about Coach Kitchen. Like I said before, it would be great to see them win 15 - 18 games a year and be in the hunt for the SOC year after year like it used to be. It doesn't always have to take "years" to turn a program around. Look what Hughes did and what "Stormin Normin" is doing at Oak Hill right now!!
