WK 7 Athens vs. Wellston
Re: WK 7 Athens vs. Wellston
Congratulations to my alma mater, The Wellston Golden Rockets on their victory over TVC-Ohio newcomer, The Athens Bulldogs, at the Plains 34-21.
Athens was also Wellston's old SEOAL foe from 1925-1928 / 1931-1981.
Hopefully, these old former SEOAL Charter Members who now play in the TVC-Ohio will continue to have great games.
Those being:

Good job Wellston on a hard fought win although i think they may have some sportsmanship issues but congrats nonetheless. also, please keep athens' senior Travis Keirns in your thoughts and prayers. he was notified minutes before the game ended that his mother and former Bulldog photographer had passed away after a long battle with cancer.

Re: WK 7 Athens vs. Wellston
The Wellston ground game was too much early. Wellston scores on a fourth and long and then gets a pick six for a quick 14 pts. Bulldogs find themselves down two touchdowns at the half. Athens improves run defense the second half for a 7-6 advantage, but it is not enough to catch up.
Please keep the Keirns family in your thoughts and prayers.

The game report per my colleague and former co-worker Tom Metters. Enjoy.
Rockets get by Bulldogs, stretch streak to three

For The Times-Journal
THE PLAINS — Wellston erupted for a 28-14 halftime lead and went on to capture a 34-21 victory over Athens to spoil the Bulldogs’ Homecoming activities at Rutter Field Friday night.
Jaylen Prater ran for two touchdowns and Jeff Matteson, Ryan Darnell and Matt Lockard added one apiece to lead the way for the Rockets.
It was the third win in as many weeks for the Rockets, now 3-4 overall and 3-1 in the Tri-Valley Conference Ohio Division.
Athens, which had also gained wins the past two weeks, falls to 2-5 and 2-2.
Darnell’s score came in the second quarter as he scooped up a Bulldog fumble and went 20 yards for the score.
It came shortly after the Rockets had taken a 21-6 advantage on a score by Matteson.
Ian Dixon and Shad McCollum caught touchdown passes from Trey Harris, and Cameron Tope added another touchdown for the team.
“We played well, especially in the first half,†Wellston head coach Jason Mantell said. “We made a couple of big plays defensively that kept them from scoring,†he added.
Mantell praised the effort of quarterback Cody Wilkett.
“He has stepped up a leader and has shown why he is a captain as a junior,†Mantell said. “I have to salute Athens as well.â€
He also praised some blocking efforts by Lockard, which opened the way for some big gains by Prater.
“It’s a reversal of roles, but it gives us a one-two punch,†he said.
Athens head coach Ryan Adams was disappointed with some phases of his team’s performance, noting that there seemed to be a little lack of emotion even with the Homecoming activities.
“We may have had our minds in other places,†he said. “I was disappointed that the boys weren’t able to come out with a better performance. Wellston came here and executed their gameplan the way they wanted.â€
“We made some mistakes early. For us to be able to execute at times against a team that is physical like Wellston, we have to mix it up a little. At times we looked good but at other times we failed to execute,†Adams added.
He said that Wellston’s touchdown on the fumble recovery in the second quarter deflated the team’s momentum.
Wellston drove 62 yards in five plays for its first touchdown, which came on a 27-yard run by Prater with an extra point kick by Lockard.
An 18-yard pass from Wilkett to Darnell on a second-down play set the stage for the touchdown.
The teams traded punts before the Rockets were able to tack on another touchdown, this one on a 7-yard run by Prater and another Lockard PAT kick.
Athens answered with a touchdown of its own on a 25-yard pass from Harris to Dixon with 5:57 remaining in the second quarter, but a kick for the extra point was blocked to make the score 14-6.
Wellston, however, had an answer of its own.
The Rockets drove 58 yards in eight plays, including a 13-yard keeper by Wilkett, capped off by a 32-yard pass from Wilkett to Matteson and another PAT kick by Lockard.
It was just 15 seconds later that Darnell’s fumble recovery and a Lockard PAT kick widened the team’s lead to 28-6.
Athens was able to score just before the half on a 4-yard run by Tope and Robby Glass added a PAT pass from Harris.
After a scoreless third quarter, Lockard scored on a 1-yard run for Wellston, and Athens scored on a 26-yard pass from Harris to McCollum with David Starkey adding the extra point.
The Rockets held a 20-17 advantage in first downs and outgained the Bulldogs 372-278.
The Rockets racked up 243 rushing yards, and held a 20-minute advantage (34-14) in time of possession.
Prater rushed for 107 yards and Lockard 91 for the Rockets, with Wilkett adding 129 yards in the air including three passes to Matteson for 111 yards.
Tope rushed for 71 yards and Harris passed for 189 yards, including four passes to McCollum for 101 yards.
Both teams committed nine penalties and punted at least five times.
Athens will travel to Nelsonville-York for another TVC-Ohio game next Friday, while the Rockets will be at Gallipolis for a non-league game the same night.
