I don't know why everyone brings up transfers all the time. Every school has students that transfer in and out for whatever reason. People need to give it a rest.

Not EVERY school and not at the frequency Ironton gets them.

I've offered to make this deal and will again. I'll never mention transfers again if Ironton never mentions school-size again. Deal?

Glad you brought that up Aces, we have a lunch in the planning stages possibly at Fred's in the Burg. We have a new scheduler and he hasn't quite got a handle on the planning techniques yet. And we would luv to have you in attendance as we have never had a College Professor eat with us and I think you would fit in very nice with the group. Keep your eyes open as that lunch thread will be hitting the board shortly.....

I totally agree with you tigermama. If kids want to go any were to play ball then they need to come to Ironton. Just look at all the athletes that have went to the next level. At other schools it is just not possible. They dont get the attention that Ironton Football gets.

I know of kids that have transferred to Coal Grove and Chesapeake over the years but I don't hear that mentioned. My son transferred to Ironton in the sixth grade. He was not recruited by anyone. At his former school a football coach wanted me to hold him back because he was so young and so big just for football. Needless to say, I didn't. No one has ever asked me to hold him back at Ironton. Oh, by the way, at that same school, my oldest son was asked to stay back a grade for football and he laughed at it. It happens at every school but because Ironton has a strong tradition of winning, it gets talked about more. I also don't post about the size of a school because I really don't care about it. I think any team can win or be beaten on any given night because of skill and talent. JMO. Whatever reasons kids transfer, it is between the parents and the children, not all of Lawrence County.

It's really tough to say what the problem is with Ironton football, it could be a number of things. Yes it could be that they are in a new league with different opponents. Yes it could be that the offense is very predictable running off tackle with a little play action here and there. It could also be that they need to get out of a zone defense against passing teams. And one main problem is what someone mentioned previously, "the kids are too cocky!" This comes back to not respecting your coaches, but who can blame them when the 2 main coaches were not at weightlifting pushing them all summer long!!!!!! Like I said there are numerous things wrong, take your pick!

i do know that the respect thing is one of the problems. i have had family play within the last couple of years and said it was awful the way coaches dont get respect. to many chiefs not enough indians!!!!!!!!

Ive seen that too the lack of respect for the coaches. Some kids care, but other have been brought up from pee wee thinking they are special and deserve special treatment and when they dont get it they rebel against the coaches. I know when I played kids were scared to even go on vacation for fear of missing summer lifting. Now the kids come and go as they please. Its riduculous. It goes back to taking pride in your team and having the heart to play the game. Its about doing the little things right like being on time for meetings, lifting in the summer, and working hard. A lot also I think goes to these guys thinking they deserve something because they wear the Orange and Black. On Friday nights you just arent playing for yourself your playing for the community and all the players and coaches that came before you that laid the groundwork and the tradition of Ironton football. Thats what we are missing in these kids. Theres been a slow erosion of that respect and work ethic for a few years now.

One factor among several: Ironton just doesn't have the bodies any more (yes, I'm talking about SCHOOL SIZE)

For your consideration:

When Ironton rejoined the SEOAL in the late 60's after being in the COL for a few years, the typical graduating class was 200 or more; mine was about 206.

The Class of 2008, according to the graduation special section of the Ironton Tribune, had about 100.

Anybody that thinks such a shrinkage has no effect is delusional, in my humble opinion.

And barring some unlikely population explosion in the city, it's going to get even worse (I've heard anywhere from 90 down to 70 within the next few years).

Ya know TC, in the past I've read some of your posts in amazement at the lack of sense or knowledge in the past, but I agree with you 100%.

But not just at Ironton, every school has kids like that, thanks to mom and dad!

For everything they have done the past 30 years for Ironton they have earned the right to miss summer lifting. Like em or not you should automatically as a player give them your respect for that same reason.

miss lifting as head coaches??????? your kiddin me right? that is their job as a dedicated coach if i'm not mistaken. if you are a lawyer for 30 years do you earn the right not to go to a hearing or defend a client? haha the same aspect applies to any job!

You are mistaken. I'll use your own comparison, missing a hearing or defending a client would be the equivelent of missing a scrimmage or a game. When your older and realize how the real world works, you'll see that attorneys and most other successful professions have other people do their paper work for them. It's called delegation.

Right there is the problem. Back talking thats all you hear from kids nowdays in the classroom and on the field. You tell them to do something and all you hear is well why do I when Jimmy doesnt have? Or I didnt do it? Lack of respect for the coaches and the past is what is wrong with Tiger football. That lackof respect leads to a lack of team mentality which leads to a lack of heart. Because if you are only playing for yourself then why should your teammates care about you. If you got 5 or 6 guys thinking like that then you are in for some trouble.

Going back to not being there. You how many times I saw our College head coach, who by the way is one of the most respected coaches in Ohio, in our weight room for winter lifting? Im going to say 3 or 4 times. Why is that? Its because he is not the strenght coach. He is the head coach. He has other things to do to get ready for the season.

this is high school not college bub! much less to do in high school and that comes back to the topic of this thread. "whats wrong with Ironton?" if the kids to not respect the coaches then the waterfall effect will happen unless someone takes charge aka the coaches not being there adds flame to the fire!
