Jan 3rd - Federal Hocking (4-3, 3-1) @ Southern (5-1, 3-1)

Post by Power 105 »

The wide open TVC-Hocking gets some definition Tuesday night from Racine as Power 105's Athens County High School Basketball Game of the Week returns.

Federal Hocking and Southern are knotted in the TVC-Hocking standings at 3-1 in league play. FH head coach Howie Caldwell returns home to face his old club in the Tornadoes. Plenty of story lines ahead on this contest.

Coverage begins at 7:30 with pregame coverage with a 7:45 tip off from Racine.

You can listen online at www.athensi.com - search WXTQ FM in the bottom right hand corner.

Good luck to both teams.

As much as I like Howie - and living in Athens I kind of pull for the other Athens county teams - but I just don't think Fed Hock has the fire power to beat Southern in Racine. The Tornadoes are one of the more impressive teams I have seen all year and I'm kind of surprised by the loss at Eastern with all the talent & size they possess.

After seeing them play Friday versus Meigs - I couldn't help but noticing the striking similarities between this years Southern team and the team Howie coached two years ago at Eastern which finished 19-1. I mean, Andrew Roseberry could be Titus Pierce's brother with the way he plays, looks and he is even left handed like Titus ... Nathan Roberts is a similar player to how Mikey Johnson was with both of them being strong, athletic kids who can jump out of the gym ... Ethan Martin would be Southern's version of Jake Lynch and Adam Pape is real similar to Tyler Hendrix (they even wear the same number 24 ... lol) ... And then you have Ryan Taylor, who could be compared to Brayden Pratt and guess what? They wear the same No. 14 ... Crazy.

The big difference though will be if Southern can get 6-foot-7 Chandler Drummer to play as well as he did versus Meigs ... Eastern never had that kind of size - and its somewhat needed once you get to the Convo or beyond.

If Southern plays like they are capable they should win but with the Howie factor you know it will be a close game.

Big game for both teams. Winning at Southern is a tall order for anybody, but I think the Lancers are improving every week and are up for the challenge. FH looked more polished offensively against Alexander and have been playing tough, physical defense all year. I look for a barn burner tomorrow in Racine. Go Lancers!

I know you folks who live down in Meigs thinks the intersections in and around Rt. 7 - and where you get off to go to Meigs High school (off Rt 33) - is simple and easy ... But I'm hear to tell you - ITS NOT!!! Ive screwed up going to a Meigs game twice in one week ... Now that I have looked over the mapquest directions to Southern - I am somewhat horrified ... lol

Can someone tell me if there is just a simple way of getting to Southern besides dealing with all the new intersections?

From Athens take 33 and stay on it past rt7 toward Ravenswood and you will come to a road to the left that says Racine.Turn left and go to the stop sign and turn right. Thats Basham Rd,You will see the sign that says Southern High School.Go to the red light Sr 124 and turn right and Southern is on the left.

Howie don't coach no more at Racine and he will be treated as such. If Racine don't win this one by a bunch there aint no need to talk about tourny runs.

Power 105 Thanks for doing the game, our fans appreciate it. Some of our fans have to work and miss the game. It is nice to at least be able to listen to it. Thanks again.

Guaranteed it will be close to 90 degrees in the gym by the time this one starts. Dress in layers, 'cause you are going to be peeling down to your t-shirt by halftime. :122249

78 total points. Sounds like neither team had good shooters tonight. Congrats to southern on a big league win

This was a typical game against a Coach Howie Caldwell coached team, he slowed the pace of the game down and than Southern ran some clock in the 4th so it was low scoring. I watched Oak Hill and Waterford both score in the thirties in the district championship a few years back with Borden and Sloan who could both light it up. A score doesn't always reflect if someone can shoot or not. I will give you we didn't shoot our foul shots very well tonight.

Southern did what they had to in order to win the game ... Its tough scoring versus Fed Hock (ask Alexander who only scored 26 against them last Tuesday.) Their guards are scrappy and they hustle around the perimeter - with 7-foot Saylor and 6-foot-4 Carney underneath protecting the paint - it becomes somewhat difficult to get open shots. I'll admit Southern did not look as good as they did versus Meigs - but that could be more to do with Fed Hock than Southern ...

One thing they need to do (Southern) is clean up their game a little ... Hitting foul shots would be part of that statement and cutting down on a few pointless turnovers ... They looked like a 'diamond-in-the-rough' tonight meaning you can see all the athleticism, the talent, the size and the basketball skills - but they didn't play up to that potential for parts of the game ... Had they hit their free-throws and dropped in a few wide open threes they missed - the Tornadoes would have won by 13 or 15 instead of 6.
