Ranking the area teams since the PDT won't, after week 8
I would like to thank Chris Dunham of The Portsmouth Daily Times for finally doing a power poll this past week. Sure it was Friday of the eighth week of the season, but better late then never. I will still continue to post mine each week because it seems to be pretty popular, plus I cover different teams.
This ranking is to fill the void left by the Portsmouth Daily Times, and will include all SOC teams and the SEOAL SOUTH.
1. West (8-0) last week # 2- The Senators reclaim the top spot this week after a strong performance against a quality opponent in the Minford Falcons. West was able to win the game 28-6 on the back of their strong running game, and defense, which included a 20 play 90 plus yard drive after a defensive stand stopped Minford inside the 10 yard line. With the exception of 20 points scored against them in a game with Chesapeake the Senators have allowed a mere 19 points. This week West will play host to the 5-3 Valley Indians. This could be a trap game if the Senators are looking ahead to week 10.
2. Wheelersburg (8-0) last week # 1- Burg advanced to 8-0 this week by dismantling the Northwest Mohawks 42-17. The Pirates scored at will in this game leading 35-3 at the half. This week they will travel to Waverly to take on the Tigers in what may be a trap game for the Pirates as well. Burg should have no problem in this week’s game unless they are looking forward to the week 10 showdown.
3. Chillicothe (6-2) last week # 3- Chillicothe continued their winning ways this week as they rolled through SEOAL opponent Jackson by a score of 41-16. The Cavs are playing better than any team on the list right now but two early season losses are keeping them at three. (Even though those losses come to powerhouses that only have one loss between them.) Week 9 will see Chillicothe try to stay perfect in league play as they host Warren. Win here and the Cavs will have a week 10 showdown with SEOAL Champ Logan. Win that and the Cavs will take the top spot on the list.
4. Ironton (5-3) last week # 4 – The Fighting Tigers renewed the 2nd oldest rivalry in the state this past Friday as they defeated the Portsmouth Trojans 37-6 at Spartan Stadium. Although the Tigers picked up the win they fell a spot in the computer poll to 4. Look for the Tigers to improve on that standing as this week they travel to Nelsonville York to take on the 7-1 Buckeyes.
5. Gallia Academy (5-3) last week # 6- The Blue Devils move up a spot this week as they defeat Wellston 42-20. This keeps playoff hopes alive for Gallia Academy as they currently hold the 7th spot in region 15. In the next two weeks the Blue Devils will be tested as they play host to two division two schools in SEOAL play in Zanesville and Marietta.
6. Minford (6-2) last week # 5- The Falcons dropped another spot this week as they suffer through a two game losing streak at the hands of Burg and West. This loss slid the Falcons all the way down to 9th in region 19. This week Minford will travel to McDermott to play Northwest. With few computer points coming for the Falcons in week 9 they will have to fight Valley for 3rd in the SOC week 10. This game could have playoff implications for both. Should make for yet another great week 10 matchup.
7. Valley (5-3) last week #11- The Indians move up 4 spots this week on the heels of an impressive 42-14 victory over the Waverly Tigers. This was the Indians biggest victory this season, but because of their weak schedule they sit at # 17 in region 19. That can change in the next two weeks for Valley as they play both West and Minford. These are two big point games, but may be out of the Indians reach this year. Win both and Valleys in the playoffs and have a chance at a shared SOC title. Win one and the Indians can still sneak in the back door with some help.
8. East (7-1) last week # 7- The Tartans put another mark in the victory column this week as they defeat South Gallia 31-0. East may be better then I have given credit for but the schedule they play makes it hard to know how good or bad they are. Their opponents have a combined winning percentage of 31. I know we hear it about East being a D6 school, but if they want to be considered a power they need to play better competition. Examples are the schedules that other D6 teams such as Norwalk Saint Paul, Magadore, Newark Catholic, or Mechanicsburg play. Till East steps up their play it’s hard to know where they fall. After all a weak schedule does the Tartans no favors when the playoffs get here. This week East travels to Green.
9. Jackson (5-3) last week # 8- The Ironmen fall another spot this week as they lose to Chillicothe 41-16. Jackson now sits 12th in region 8 with 2 good point games remaining, but may have had their last victory this season as the coming weeks have the Ironmen hosting Logan and Zanesville. It will be interesting to see how Jackson responds in the next two games.
10. Waverly (3-5) Last week # 9- The Tigers suffered a 42-14 defeat at the hands of the Valley Indians Friday night, to fall to 3-5 on the season. The Tigers defense has been suspect all year long and continues to be so with Waverly’s D giving up 42 or more points for the 5th time this season. This week will see the Tigers taking on the Burg in Waverly.
11. Portsmouth (1-7) last week 10- The Trojans dropped another game this week as they fell victim to arch rival Ironton. For the first quarter and 3 minutes in to the 2nd the Trojans could have played with any team on the list. The two teams traded punts until the Trojans took a 6-0 lead on a 2 yard run by Aaron Montgomery, set up by a 41 yard strike form Josh Myers to Malik White. The lead would be short lived for the Trojans as Ironton returned the ensuing kick 61 yards to set up shop on the Trojan 20 yard line. Five plays later the Tigers take a 7-6 lead and never looked back. This week the Trojans will play host to Marietta, before Western Brown in week 10.
12. Oak Hill (5-3) last week #12- The Oaks improved to 5-3 with a 56-7 victory over Symmes Valley. Oak Hill currently sits 15th in region 19 and without a lot of help I’m afraid they have missed the playoffs for this season.
13. Notre Dame (5-3) last week # 13- The Titans beat Green Saturday night 36-12. Notre Dame still has a shot at a share of the SOC title and a playoff trip but will need to beat East in week 10 to do so. This week Notre Dame will play host to Symmes Valley in another must win situation.
14. Symmes Valley (4-4) last week # 14- The Vikings fell 56-7 this week to Oak Hill. Suffering their 2nd conference loss in as many weeks Symmes Valley will have to win out and get lots of help to have a shot at the post season
15. Green (2-5) Last week #15- The Bobcats fell to 2-5 this past Saturday as they were defeated by Notre Dame 36-12. The Bobcats will finish out their season with East and Oak Hill. Another win this year would be a surprise.
16. Northwest (1-7) last week # 16 – This past week the Mohawks continued to struggle as they lost to Wheelersburg. The last two weeks do not present a chance for a win as the Northwest with host Minford and Waverly.
I hope this is a sign that we have shamed them into, putting out a little more effort. Only time will tell.
I bet the Burg is routing for Ironton this week as they play Nelsonville York. A win is big level 2 points and knocks off the team at 1 in region 19.

How can you consider teams like; Chillicothe, Ironton, Gallia Academy, Jackson, Oak Hill and Symmes Valley. As area ranking teams in coverage that the PDT does not distribute to?
I mean! Why not rank them according to their conference ranking? One other thing; on another thread it was stated by, I believe you that said any SOC conference teams would be able to handle or compete with teams in the SEOAL! But, in your listing here you have two SOC II teams ranked higher than five of the SEOAL teams! You have two other SOC II teams ranked higher than two SEOAL teams! And you have one SOC I team ranked higher than two SEOAL teams! And one other SOC II team ranked higher than one SEOAL team!
There are 5 SEOAL teams in the rankings! Which is 31.25% of the rankings! Six SOC II teams in the rankings! Which is 37.50% of the rankings! Five SOC I teams in the rankings! Which is 31.25% of the rankings!
Two SOC II teams are 100% better than the SEOAL! The top seven teams are comprised of the SEOAL and SOC II. SOC II: 57.15% SEOAL: 42.85%.
Looks like to me according to these rankings the SOC II does pretty well compared to the SEOAL! I know! I know! Your going to say there is this scheduling thing! But, if your going to compare! Try using the same fruit!
Then why place Northwest last! They play the 3 W's and Minford and Valley! Pretty tough schedule the SOC II has as well! So if you can't give them a break at 1-7 then; why would any other team with the same record get any break over other area teams with a better record?
You don't have to explain or answer! It's your rankings and that is how you feel and thats great! I was just pointing out some numbers and some other ideas! Thanks!
FYI: East is considered to be one of the top teams in their region; which would be considered a powerhouse team this year and last year in their region! They or any other team do not have to prove to anybody but their Division or conference that they are good! East will take care of business in their region and conference! Can yours? Not since the SEOAL!

Hell, you can throw Wheelersburg in that mix, because overt the last two weeks, I've only received my paper three times so I'm guessing they quit delivering in the Burg also.

At no time did I say coverage area. When the PDT didn't run their rankings I decided to make my own. If I'm doing it I'm going to do the teams that I have an interest in.
I never said that. I said only Burg, West and maybe Waverly could compete in the SEOAL.Axe N Shield wrote:One other thing; on another thread it was stated by, I believe you that said any SOC conference teams would be able to handle or compete with teams in the SEOAL
While we are on the subject I do believe that the SEOAL is a much stronger conference. Right now West and Burg sit 1 and 2 however I think Chillicothe is a better team, and will have the chance to jump them week 10. I also believe that Ironton would beat West and Burg (if they played again) but the Tigers lost 3 so there stuck down the list.
How can this be when the SOC has not played any of the top teams in the SEOAL, lets see how they would fair vs. Logan and Chillicothe.Axe N Shield wrote:Looks like to me according to these rankings the SOC II does pretty well compared to the SEOAL! See... Thats my point exactly! You compare every other team in the area to the SEOAL or the teams that Portsmouth plays. Look... It's plain and simple! No other team in this area has to use Portmouth or their schedule as a measuring stick to determine if they are a good football team; program or conference! It really amazes me that some Portsmouth fans beleive that all area teams should use this program as a barometer of their success in their conference, region or division! Face it! Your not the measurement of success to any other program in this area or any other area for that matter!
Someone said; that East should toughen up their schedule so when they get into the playoffs; they should play teams like Mechanicsburg, St. Henry and Minster play! I agree that we should increase the strength of schedule some; but we don't need to go out and do what Portsmouth done and get our brains beat out year after year or should any of these other schools! Just because Portsmouth or their fan base thinks it would be good! This will only bring your program down as kids and fans will become dis-hearted over the lack of being able to compete!
But, back to the main thing! Again... Portsmouth is not the model to follow for southern Ohio football or in the area for that matter! As far as a measurement of success! That does not mean that they don't have a good program, kids or coaching staff!

Everyone else are dreaming if they think they are at the Pirates level as far as reloading.
If I wanted to be able to reload every year, I would study to see how they are able to do it.
It's not like they are a thriving Metropolis with their pick of the litter.
They typically grow/develop from within.
That now is a true statement; especially grow/develop from within! Of course the Walker & Thomas kids are from Sciotoville originally and the Robinson kid is from Minford!
And, I am proud to say that East now has one of their best ex-coaches at the helm of the Tartan program!

Burg is and deserves to be ahead of Minford. However, in a rematch, Minford will take it. Hopefully, we'll see in the playoffs.

Axe N Shield wrote:See...
When doing a ranking I have to have some way to determine who is 1st and who is last. I never said PHS is the measuring stick for anybody. If anyone in this area is it is Ironton, or Burg. Teams in other conferences and divisions can have great accomplishments and should be proud of all they have accomplished, however to fairly rank teams I must take into consideration the schedule that these teams have played.

You see PHS needed in a league, because it is very hard to schedule without one, not to mention the fact that our kids didn't have the opportunity to play for titles, or league awards. So when the OKAC folded and the SOC still had no interest, PHS was approached by the SEOAL. This was by far our best option, and in the long run is working out fine.
