Waverly Girl's Soccer?

Post by pcohio »

Word is that they had a special board meeting last night concerning starting a Girl's Team at Waverly! Anybody know how the meeting turned out?

That would be sweet to have another girls' team in the area!!..Right now teams like Minford have to travel pretty far just to play, and most of the time the teams are a lot bigger than what Minford has!!

Well i hope it is true it would be great to see another girls team in the area and maybe other schools like West Northwest The Burg and South Webster would follow . I think those schools would have alot of girl intrested in it and be very good also. My hat goes off to the Waverly School Board if they make this move :12224 :12224 :12224 :12224

If someone would mention Title IX that might make a difference.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think Title IX would be a factor because girls are not denied the right to participate in soccer.

That is the problem with bringing up the Title IX issue because soccer is actually a co-ed sport at Waverly, even though they are called the Waverly BOYS Soccer team, girls are welcome to play! Where this gets to be an issue for Waverly is the girls understand that it would be very difficult for them to get any Varsity playing time on the boys team (with Ari being the exception) so they usually quit after Junior High!

The money thing is always the "excuse" the school board uses for every new program someone tries to institute for the benfit of the KIDS! However, I have been told that the party interested in starting Girl's Soccer has sponsors to cover the majority of the costs...Let's be honest, it would not be that much to start and maintain the team.
A couple of thousand to cover the Coach's pay, referees and gas to away matches would do the trick! There are plenty of used soccer uniforms from past seasons that the team could use to save that cost!

The Waverly School Board needs to evaluate what is in the best interest of the KIDS at their school! I feel they would easily field a team if it was offered!

This is something that has been needed for some time. Looking back over the years Waverly could have competed well with teams in the area. There are plenty of girls ready to play if it happens. I know Chris Murphy does not like girls on the team but is more or less forced to allow them.

Like pcohio said, there are plenty of uniforms available so that won't be a problem. How much do other coaches get paid (volleyball, softball, etc.)?

I don't know what Varsity Coaches are making...but the Jr High Soccer coach makes less than $1500
