WK 10 Rock Hill @ River Valley
Re: WK 10 Rock Hill @ River Valley
Other notable players who have been stepping up have to include 6' 8" Sam Cooke at tight end... they have thrown him two balls and he has caught both in traffic, on the move and for big gains... he can take a hit and usually delivers more punishment on a hit than he recieves... he'll be back next year as well and could become a big target and an extreme weapon for coach Knipp... also, Jeremy Blagg has been learning the safety position quickly... With those players noted, let me say a word about our defense... as the secondary learns to NOT to bite on play action fakes... especially when a pass is inevitable... they will "sure up" a shakey defense (there was no excuse for the .3 second TD against SP last Friday at the end of the 1st half)... I don't think they did it on purpose... it was just a lack of concentration... I'm sure the coaches prepared the defense for the ONLY possible play, a Hail Mary pass... We have to listen and execute much better... these guys have the ability to lock teams down, but they haven't learned to play every down with a sense of urgency and team intimidation... there isn't enough "Katie bar the door" head hunting mentality... fly to the ball and swarm the play... every play! When that starts happening, RH will go to the next level... as long as they take plays off and wait on the next guy to do their job for them they will continue to give up big points... The coaches can't play for you... you have to make a personal decision about what kind of a player you want to be... and by the way... it takes 11 guys making the same choice to give 100% every down! I sure would love to see it start this Friday! Go Hill!

How many seniors will each of the teams be losing after Friday's game? Will either team be returning a bunch of lettermen next year?

Rock Hill only has about 3 or 4 playing... they have around 17-18 juniors and a load of sophomores as well... things should improve for the Redmen next season and beyond. And as for our seniors this year Butterbaugh, Fradd, Bammer, Justice... they have given it their all and we will miss them... Brandon Guy has had such tough luck with injuries... he is an impact player and not having him has has been difficult, but probably not near as difficult as its been on him... I hope I didn't miss any... but I wish all those boys the best! This year has in no way defined their careers... they have been a part of some good Rock Hill football and they were a large part in making it so.

Re: WK 10 Rock Hill @ River Valley
What % of RV's offensive series have been three and out and what % of their defensive series have been three and, oh-sh!t, they scored again?

Why all the hate on the coaching staff here? Huck knows his defense and Coach Mc is a good fit there. He paid his dues over the years with various coaches and has hung in there for the kids! At the end of the day its about what you are teaching these young men. Dont try to analyze something you know nothing about!

I don't think that anybody would say that Coach McC is pleased with a defense that is giving up 37.2 points per game.
As far as boogerred's post, sure, it's abrasive (Do you actually know boogerred? He's abrasive as Hell!), but asking a statistical question like "What % of RV's offensive series have been three and out" is legitimate. It's an attempt to come to some knowledge about his alma mater's football program.
From experience, I know that a big-play passing game can be your friend and it can be your worst enemy, too. Time of possession is an huge issue for most football teams. If you score in three plays and then spend 8-10 plays on defense, which team has spent more of it's energy?
Incompletions are deadly too, especially when you are struggling on defense. You can end up leaving a lot of time on the clock for the opposition.
It has been said that many of the RV kids play both ways. Now, I ask the knowledgeable football people out there this question, "Which tires a kid out more, playing offense or defense?"
Spending a lot of time on defense wears a kid out. Coaches want kids to play intensely on offense, but somehow defense and chasing the ball just fatigues an athlete.
It becomes a vicious cycle, because you pass more to catch up, but then the faster you score, the sooner you are on defense wearing yourself out.
(honest question here) Are the Raiders in most of their games at halftime?
Good hunting on Friday, Raiders and Co.

Karl...great post!
That's exactly why NUMBERS are so important, especially in football. The more bodies you have to throw out on the field at the opposition, the more likely you are to wear them down. Granted, those bodies have to be able to play or at least be willing to sell out for the team.
By and large, in high school football at this level, the team that has 70 kids will generally beat the team with only 40 kids. Plus, having your team fill the sideline from 20 to 20 (or whatever the size of the team area is) gets in the head of the opposition.

faqer, of course, meaning "one who asks frequently asked questions"
Re: WK 10 Rock Hill @ River Valley
Here's a stat that Rock Hill will want to forget: this year in 4 OVC games, the Redmen are being outscored by an average of 24-6 in the 2nd half.

True, that's not good... teams are double and triple teaming Davenport in the second half and forcing the Hill to turn elswhere for big yards... I think the coaches have finally become wise to that strategy and will hopefully have some wrinkles to throw in... Also, if one man is doubled or tripled... someone else has to be open... we have to find them and then they have to step up and make a play... plus Bammer has the ability to chew up junks of yards and the clock, while Brown has been running hard the last few games... we have to establish the run... that accounts for the 6 pts average on offense... as for the 24 points on defense... I think we have to become more agressive in our play and our play calling... we have to get creative, throw things at the other offense that keeps them looking over their shoulder... take some chances and make adjustments if not only to mix things up... what do we have to lose... the boys have got to play with more reckless abandon as well... granted they are doing better at getting to the ball (that's good) but we just are not finishing (that's bad)... I'm confident in our coaching staff, but the players have got to listen and make plays as well... Hopefully we'll put it all together this week.
Re: WK 10 Rock Hill @ River Valley
What defense does RV run (I saw them running a 4-4 with a cover 3 but that wasn't doing the job)?
You have to have linebackers with speed and the ability to make open-field tackles to be able to run a 4-4. With undersized linemen playing OLB, you leave yourself vulnerable to the rocket sweep , drive off tackle and to short passes in the flat.
What kinds of adjustments has RV made?
Are they still bumping to a 4-2 against the spread? If so, BIG MISTAKE. I know many people around here hate Rich Rodriguez but he does understand football. The reason a team would run the spread is to get that 4-2 adjustment, which gives the offense an advantage in the box and that is why Rodriguez and the Mountaineers were always able to RUN the ball. This advantage is also why the zone read works.
LOCK MAN against the spread, baby!!!
