Great game by the Fighting Tigers.

Carter had 30.

Thought Dion played his best game yet. He is getting better and better every game.

Dion did play well. He had 12 points in an aggressive effort.

Carter pushes Ironton past HHS, 62-54

IRONTON -- Huntington High's defense completely executed its gameplan of not allowing Ironton's
Zac Carter to get a good look at the basket Friday night.

In the end, that shows exactly just how good the Fighting Tigers' junior leader really is.

Despite being hounded all night, Carter made plays happen on the fly and finished with 30 points, including 13 in the fourth quarter to lead Ironton (4-0) in a 62-54 victory over the Highlanders (1-2) at the Conley Center.

"The composure piece was there even though that they did everything they could to take him out of his game," Ironton head coach Mark LaFon said.

Carter saved his best for late in the game, essentially willing himself to the basket and making some tough layups.

Possibly his best play on the night was with 3:55 left and the Fighting Tigers clinging to a 49-45 lead. Carter got the ball after being hounded nearly 30 feet away from the basket, weaved through traffic and hung in the air to hit a shot while absorbing contact.

The 3-point play ended the Highlanders' momentum.

In looking at statistics, people will see that Carter had 30 points and think the Highlanders were unable to contain him.

Such is not the case.

Of his eight field goals, only three were in the flow of the offense. Many others were in transition following turnovers and he also finished 12-of-14 at the line.

Huntington High coach Ron Hess lauded his defense after the game for the effort against Carter and Ironton's Trey Fletcher, who finished with 11 points and eight rebounds.

"We came out and played with good energy tonight and didn't back down at all against this team," Hess said. "I was proud of our kids the way they scrapped against a very, very good Ironton team."

With Huntington High clamped down on Fletcher in the lane, the Fighting Tigers needed someone to step up as a third option. Ironton got that needed contribution from Dion Brown, who finished with 12 points and nine rebounds.

The Highlanders had two sets of hands flying at both Carter and Fletcher for much of the night, and Brown took advantage by getting backside on the offensive backboard for several opportunities.

"As long as Trey decides he is going to tear up on the inside, Dion is going to get his chances," LaFon said. "They basically said 'Those other guys can't do anything so we are going to take them away.' They know our guys, they know our kids. I was proud because all our guys stepped up."

The game might not be considered a rivalry in the minds of many people, but those that know the circumstances surrounding the contest know exactly how important it was for both teams.

The coaches in the contest have faced each other for years, and some have even coached together. All the players hang out together and many play AAU basketball together.

It was almost like playing a game against family -- nothing but good ol' bragging rights for a year.

Just like in last year's contest which was decided on a buzzer-beater, three of four quarters in this game were decided by two points or less.

Shaquan Miller and Toquan Hayes both had 15 points to lead Huntington High (1-2) while Tyquan Sayles scored 10 and had seven rebounds.

HUNTINGTON HIGH 16 7 16 15 -- 54: Miller 15, Tubbs 7, King 1, Sayles 10, Hayes 15, Wooding 6.

IRONTON 16 13 16 17 -- 62: Johnson 7, Carter 30, Brown 12, Fletcher 11, Stephens 2.
