SEMI-PRO FOOTBALL IN SCIOTO COUNTY

Has there ever been semi-pro (or senior amateur or whatever you want to call it ) football in Scioto County, especially in the past 30 years?

Scioto County (like its neighbor Lawrence Co.) has been a place of great football success at the high school level. Has there ever been a time when those guys who didn't go on to play college ball joined up to play for the love of the game and see how they match up against guys from other cities?

Scioto County has almost 80,000 people. One would think that would be enough to support a team or two to go out and play some ball.

It would never get the support needed to make it profitable.

For one, Spartan Stadium needs condemned. So finding a suitable venue would be an issue.

Secondly, when Portsmouth had its professional Pioneer League baseball team in the Explorers, it was the best thing since sliced bread for about 2 years, then support died off and they werent getting anyone in the seats to fund the team.

It would be tough with today's economy for something like that to exist and survive in a small community in southern Ohio.

True, it was nice to see a game every now and them, but not having a cold suds in my hand took away from the whole experience. sad to say, but the truth.

My father played semi pro for Ironton.He was from New Boston,Ohio.But we are talking, I think, about 1920-30's.Wish I had asked him, when I could have, but he had a colorful life, so many different experiences. The only story I remember him talking about in football was getting his nose broke in Chillicothe and the method used to fix it. OUCH!!!!!Much different then
