East beat the Burg in the tourney one year, up at Ironton. It was the year that Chris Carter played football for the Burg and then went to East to play basketball and East beat Burg.

East 66 Wheelersburg 55

I only included the regular season because the issue was 'scheduled' SOC I teams since 1980. But that was the only time I see that SOC I teams have played Wheelersburg in tournament in the last 28 years. East must have had a very large enrollment that year to get up to Division III.

When I left, Burg was up by 20 with about 4 min left. Burg had pulled four of the five
starters. Burg had no trouble in the game they are quick but need some more help inside to aide Stegman. East played well for a half than fell apart in the 3 qtr.

Someone just called me and said they thought it was 68-49 or 69-48 for the final. He also said that if you want a seat on the home side and you don't have reserve seats you had better get there early since the reserve section takes up most of the entire home side except for two small areas on both ends. He said he wasn't impressed at all with the new gym.

East has something to work on between now and the 12th when it matters. They are going to have to not turn the ball over as much...watch where your passing it not just hope they are there to catch it, be smart on the shots you take, and if you have to MAKE THE EXTRA PASS...there were a couple fast breaks with a two on 1 on three on two that was not scored on when if they made the extra pass it was an easy basket.

However all in all, I think if the gel together like they should East could contend for the SOC I with Western and get back to the Convo but they have to work as a team.

Great win for this youg pirate team. They'll get better as they go through the season. Huge disappointment with the size of the gym and seating. Administration blew it again.

Doesn't offend me. Oak Hill is the front runner in the SOC II this year, but you can never count out a Tom Barrick coached team. He has had Stormin' Normans number for years. lol

I doubt many in Wheelersburg are expecting an SOC championship this year. As usual, we expect the kids to do their best and let the chips fall where they may. We know that they are starting 3 sophomores and 2 juniors and that there are no seniors. They need some experience and seasoning to reach their potential. They should get that in spades this year.

I have to agree, the new gym is somewhat of a joke. What a shame. They could have done better. To late now. I hope they don't let the genius who approved the plans have any input on football field project.

Don't worry about the team. I have complete confidence Barrick will have them playing good basketball in time for the post season. Forget about he SOC title this year. But next year, watch out.

I hear the Burg had no say in the gyms size, it was the state that makes the call on what you can have. I didn't make it to the game last night , only saw it at the open house. If the gym is that bad to see a game I won't be going to many games at home. I don't go to away games where gyms are like West or other crackerbox size gyms. But if I don't go it will make room for someone else. See you at NW or Valley.

Thank you! Once again, when you are building something using the state's money then you have to follow the state's guidelines. And since Wheelersburg was one of the last in the county to have their levy passed, the rules have since changed. That's why you see smaller schools (enrollment wise) with bigger facilities. Over the years the state kept decreasing the requirements of what you are allowed to have in a gymnasium. Stop blaming the administration! Besides, it seats something like 200-250 MORE than the old gym. You want better seats? Put up the money for reserved seats. Jr. Hi games will be better too now that they have a regulation sized gym.

Is it perfect? No. There will be adjustments that will need to be made. I heard multiple people throughout most of the game last night griping about the fact that there was ONE light not working on one of the scoreboards. Basketball isn't the only sport to use that gym. Those scoreboards went through a whole season of volleyball before any of the basketball players stepped foot in there. Guess what? Bulbs burn out occasionally! IT HAPPENS! Get over it!

/end rant.

I was at the game and I thought the Burg looked good sometimes and then looked bad other times. People in the Burg need to realize that this team is VERY YOUNG this year and will more than likely take there lumps this year. They have the talent, it is just still green and it will take Coach Barrick a few games to get them gelling together as a team. Andy Stegman is the stud of the team, but he does have a decent supporting cast around that just needs to work on some things. Stegman and Kemper are really the only two that have any varsity experience at all and they will need to be the leaders on the floor. Guard play will get better as the year progresses and I think it will be safe to say that come tourney time, they will be prepared and seasoned.

This years schedule is by far the toughest I have seen for a long time. The 7 games I have in bold are by far the toughest 7 game stretch for any team in the area. They play 5 games in a row, on the road at Portsmouth, at Ironton, at Federal Hocking, at Minford and at Oak Hill. They then come back for a home game with Northwest and then go back on the road to Waverly. WOWSA!!!!!!!! This schedule should more than anything have them ready come tourney time. If they can come out of that stretch with a winning record, 5-2 or 4-3, would be a HUGE motivator for the rest of the season. That will be tough, but it can be done.

Dec. 6 Chesapeake 6:00 PM
Dec. 12 @ West 6:00 PM
Dec.13 vs. Belpre @ Rio Grande 5:30 PM
Dec.16 Valley 6:00 PM
Dec. 19 South Webster

Now about the gym, I was not overly impressed with the layout for basketball. From what I can tell, if you are not a season ticket holder you better get there early becasue there aren't alot of general admission seats on the home side and the ones that they do have, look to be behind the baskets a little bit. I can see quite a few Burg fans filtering over to the visitors side or in behind the basket. IMO I don't think they should have done reserved seating. I'll be curious to see if there are any empty seats in the reserve section and if so, if they didn't sell them, will they be available to the general public in the case of an overflow crowd. Would be kind of silly to have empty seats if you have people willing to fill them. The floor is alright, still needs to have a logo in the center. Just looks naked without it. The rims looked to be very soft. Lot of balls that just barely caught the front of the rim and than just creeped on over

Student section wasn't in full force so will be curious to see if when it is full and the students are jumping around and cheering, if it will have an affect on the vistors as they will be shooting towards that end for the second half of the game.

IMO it doesn't look to me that it will hold as many as the old gym, especially the home side. I know it was only suppossed to be able to hold about 200-250 more people, but what everyone is not realizing is that what has happened is the vistors side has been increased from what it was at the old gym and that in turn has taken away from the home side. The visting section probably gained an extra 200-300 seats. You had about that many that sat on the stage bleachers and now that seating is gone. I think what should be done is that one of the sections on the end of the other side should be made into a home section. Waverly has a home section on the vistors side as does Ironton. I would think your goal should be to keep your home fans happy so that those that don't have reserved seats will want to come back and not worry that they will be stuck up in a corner somewhere where they can't enjoy the game. I heard alot of rumbling coming out of the gym of people saying that they more than likely won't be attending many home games. Someone has even already came on this thread and said that. Trust me, I've been to many of gyms that didn't really worry about where the vistiors sat for the game. People always complained that the Burg's vistors section was a joke, but at least they did have one that was on the floor. I remember the vistiors section at Chillicothe was up top, in a corner, while both sides of the bottom section was reserved for the Chilly fans. How fair was that?

One other thing I forgot to mention is, what the hades is the problem with the sound system? There was times I couldn't hardly even understand what the announcer was saying. It almost had the same muffled sound that the old system did, so my question is, is it the old system or did they not put in all new? If it is new, then it needs worked on.
