Will Logan no longer be the Chieftains?

I've recently heard rumblings about a suit being filed by an indian group against Logan High School for the use of the Chieftain name. It's not normal practice for me to report on a story without a link but these things have happened before (Miami Redskins to Miami Redhawks). As soon as I see a link I will post it. Some names have been considered although I prefer CHIEFTAINS. Anyone else heard anything about this? I hope it goes no further, but we do live in a PC world.

I'm sick of PC.......Logan is and always should be known as the Chieftains.......case closed.

Things like this were never an issue years ago until our country became obsessed with PC.......now everybody is being offended by something or someone.

I think its stupid. You'd think having a Chieftain as a mascot would mean something GOOD. I dont see it falling through. The Seminols are still the seminols, the redskins are still the redskins and the Chieftains will still be the Chieftains.

I heard we'd be the Hawks or the Sharks lol can you say LAAAAAAAAAAAAME.

If they have to change the name they should let it be voted on by the town. Why not? The Hawks? Sharks? SERIOUSLY!?!? We'd be made fun of for years. I can hear it now, "And your 20__ the Logan SHARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRKS" lol

The University of Rio Grande had to change its name from the Redmen to the RedStorm.

I dont think the term chieftain is not a derogatory term, so I doubt it will be changed. However, teams whose names are derogatory may have to change their names, but I would hate for the Redskins if they had to change to something like the Congressmen.

I guess that URG had the choice of RED STORM or RED DRAGONS, and they went with RED STORM.

I think the other woudl have been cooler, but I was told that there was the thought going around that RED DRAGONS would emphasize the Welsh thing and soccer too much.

Imagine that! A school where they actually experience soccer envy!

Thank you grizzly. I couldn't remember the names but I knew there was one that was way out there. Sharks would be the worst name ever. I know, how about we name ourselves after an animal that isn't within 1000 miles of here.

Something being labeled as "derogatory" is of the opinion of the person who says it. I would bet that a majority of people don't consider Chieftain to be derogatory, but unfortunately a small group of people with some letterhead and an agenda do. So once again the minority rules.

IF, it does come down to a name change you can bet the farm that I will be right there in my purple gear cheering on the CHIEFTAINS.

I agree 100%. It's highly unlikely that this "group" has even made the trip to Logan. Such appears to have been the case with Miami being pressured by an Indian tribe from Oklahoma. If they did make the trip here, they would see a community that embraces and honors the Chieftain name. I don't see the need for a change if the user honors the name properly. Heck if we have to change the name of the team, why not the name of the streets, the town, the river, the county. Where does it stop?
