I believe the NCAA rule now is that the "offended" tribe must allow a school to keep such a nickname (a la the reference to the Florida State Seminoles). I believe the Fighting Sioux of the University of North Dakota faced some issues in recent years until that tribe allowed it.
As for a reference to "Blue Devils," Zanesville actually faced such a "PC moment" -- in the 1920s! This from a history of Zanesville High School that was written in the 1980s:
Students called their athletic teams Blue Devils in the early 1920's. There is no record of the origin of the name. It included one of the school colors, not otherwise used except in the alma mater. One superintendent objected to the name Devils. He persuaded the school to adopt Blue Spartans. But when he left, they returned to the use of the Blue Devils name.
There are some here who still cringe over the use "Devils." Many years ago the school purchased a "blue devil" mascot outfield, and held a contest to name the mascot. "Blucifer" was chosen (which I thought was rather inventive), but it lasted all of a couple games because too many people complained.
Anyway, it's kind of comical when you go to church and see people wearing ZHS-logoed apparel. And it's become a little bit more funny when one of our end zones is labeled "Blue Devils," and our goalpost pads say "Devils" -- especially on the nights when the Rosecrans Bishops are playing there!
