Re: Green Special Bd. Meeting Monday
i saw coach kitchen in action a couple of games last year when he helped west out in a difficult situation and he seemed like a very very considerate and respectful purpose.he as a coach has the right to pick his team and do what he thinks is best for green basketball. he really doesnt seem like a guy that would cut kids just to be cutting them or to pick apart the community of franklin furnance. also i watched the preview between west and green and he has a good looking team and has them playing hard i was impressed. good luck green and coach kitchen

the coach was wrong in what he did, and now the school board is wrong for backing him, this is not the end of it, and it will not get swept under the rug!!
this coach thinks he is above all others, there was NO REASON FOR ANY OF THE KIDS TO BE CUT!!
and everyone wonders why the program is going to hell in the furnace![]()
It sounds to me like the progarm is going to Hell because the parents won't let the coach do what he was hired to do, pick HIS team and coach them. Parents need to to stay out of it.
I put up with this same crap in when I coached Little League. Every parent thinks their kid is the next Jeter or A-Rod when in reality if it wasn't for mandatory play they wouldn't even be on the team.

Amazing that since you asked this question, someone has disappeared from the thread. Also amazing that the same person joined the forum at the same time Green announced a new coach.......

As a former player at Green High School and now a loyal fan I am greatly dissapointed that a program so rich in basketball tradition has managed to crumble in 3 short years. Was Coach Kitchen right in making the cuts? Maybe, maybe not. To each his own. Everyone has their own view on how he should have handled the situation. He is the coach and as coach he has every right to keep who he wants to keep. If people want their kids to have a guaranteed spot on a roster the only thing I can say is put in for the job. They are all one year contracts. The other thing is I applaud the boards decision on standing by their coach. Whatever their personal feelings on the matter. Should he cut or shouldn't he cut? They all probably have different opinions on the matter just like everyone here does. But the fact of the matter is they didn't undermind the coach's decision because of parents. If this Board Of Education reversed this decision and allowed these young men back on this team then no other coach at Green High School would ever be able to suspend, discharge or cut any other player no matter what sport. To the young men that got cut. Life is full of ups and downs. Sometimes you win sometimes you don't. Don't get discouraged rather use this as motivation. Remember players are made in the off seasons. Work your behind off and come back next year and prove you belong on this team. Your decisions that you make now will ultimately affect your road in the future. I wish you all the best!

Where in the hell did you get that I wouldn't let a kid play? All I said was that I had parents who thought their kid was the next best thing to buttered bread, when in reality they couldn't field, couldn't hit, and couldn't throw and if it wasn't for mandatory play and the fact that everybody makes the team in LL, then these kids wouldn't even be playing.
Back when I was a kid you had to try out for LL and if you didn't make it then you didn't make it. You didn't have your mommy and daddy running to the paper and causing all of this ruckus because little Johnny didn't make the team. Have things become so politically correct now that if someone doesn't make a team it comes to this? Are they going to call the Governor now and see if he will intervene? It going to get to a point that coaches will shy away from certain schools if they know the parents are going to act this way.

Excellent post and it seems like you are very familiar with the situation. Little Johnny got cut this year. Face facts and deal with it. There is a lot of time between now and next year to improve and work on your game. This kid needs to do everything he can do so the coach "can't" cut him next year because of how much he has improved. Too many kids are 'babied" today and aren't ready for the real world and this is where it starts.

Sorry I could not be there[getting over a bad cold].This meeting hopefully will end this embarassing mess and the kids can get to playing.I'm sure there are a couple families still upset but I've stated many times before that I believe it's the COACH'S decision who he keeps and who he plays.I also doubt the irate parent who blew up at the meeting will get much support from the community since his oldest son transfered to another school after starting at Green as a sophomore. Lets hope we can just enjoy the kids playing hard and having fun the rest of the year. Good luck Coach Kitchen and good luck Green Bobcats on the upcoming season.PLH.

Good post hoot. I have a lot of respect for the Green Township Community and for the basketball program. I knew Coach Lewis and Coach Hopper well and they are two good men who were good leaders of the basketball team. Unfortunately, for Coach Hopper things came to an end but it sounded like he had a huge support from the community.
I don't know Coach Kitchen, but I hope this situation has ended and he can do what he's paid to do without all this drama. I thought girls team have more drama than boys teams, but not in this case.

Re: Green Special Bd. Meeting Monday
just read the PDT not that i like to but knew the story would be in ... sounds like to me the parent that said his son was cut because of attitude problem.. started at home
. and the one that said he would turn in the team. into OHSAA does not care about the program or the other players on the team
. somtimes life is not fair .... the coach is hired to do a job put the best on the court if your not picked suck it up and push yourself for the next time .. with these kind of parents i dont know how the program will ever be supported. to the ones that made the team and the parents of these young men . put this behind you .. good luck to the bobcats and to the coach

Re: Green Special Bd. Meeting Monday
c,mon HOOT....the old HOOT I knew would NEVER let a cold keep him down

Re: Green Special Bd. Meeting Monday
First of all Coach Kitchen is hired to coach basketball, he can choose whatever kids he wants for HIS team. If he doesn't do good coaching basketball with his players, then that is his fault and he will not be coaching long. As far as the kid not running in practice after Coach told him to more than once, I would have sent him out of the gym after he didn't do it the first time. That is the biggest problem with the kids today is they have NO discipline and yes it starts at home!!!

Re: Green Special Bd. Meeting Monday
T/T, all can say is you got no idea what's going on here so . Kitchen didn't do anything illegal as far as excessive contact during open gym and he decided that Pollard was un-coachable. Daddy has issues (and the apple didn't fall far from the tree) and Kitchen said it was based on ability. Ability can also be defined as an unwillingness to take direction and apply it. I believe Charlie felt that Pollard was unable to control himself and do what is best for the team. It's a hard lesson for this young man to learn but one I feel was needed. He probably was the best player on the team but the coach had to sacrifice Me for Team. I applaud him for that. The rest is "he said, she said". Unless a parent has a recording of what was said between them and the coach, nothing can be proved. From what I saw at the preview, our new coach has them going in the right direction.
As to the statement that the 'Cats have gone to hell in a hand basket over the years, obviously you ain't from around here. Only the last 2 years under Hoppers direction has it been an embarrassment. Lewis did an outstanding job while he was there with what he had and Hughes was the best coach in SE Ohio, bar none. Kitchen seems to be heading our program back in the right direction with hard work, defense and toughness. I think he just needs to realize that we don't have the abundance of talent available at places like Ironton, 'Burg and bigger schools. And I'm sure he will. It's time to play ball and see how we all progress.
