SOC Previews- And the results are...

wow I was really surprised at who got to start alvin left his seniors on the bench that i have seen there for 3 years wow and when they got in the game they looked pretty good I am a sv fan and have been for a long time but I just don't understand but I guess the romours are true that has been going around sv the payne boy is going to be the star because of who he is we will bench our seniors and other boys who have always been there and went to school there all there school years and always supported there team to play other boys beacuse of who they are wow alvin i was really surprised boys keep up the good work A ONE LONG TIME VIKING

I thought Western and Eastern were the two best small schools at the previews last night. Green gave West all they wanted. Symmes Valley, New Boston, Clay and Notre Dame all have some big gaps.

In the big division, I thought Oak Hill, Northwest and Minford all looked very good. Burg played tough defense and will throughout the year,they just need some help in the scoring department. West plays at a tempo that is fun to watch. I dont know if they have the manpower coming off the bench to play that way for an entire game. Valley also is a fun team to watch and will suprise a few teams this year. Webster is going to struggle from what I saw.

In my opinion,
I thought Waverly looked very good. Noticed they only dressed 8 players. Will this be their varsity roster for the year or are some players injured, sick, or something else. However, I thought as a starting 5 - they were very solid, will win many more games than last year - I think.

Waverly only has 9 varsity players. I was not at the preview but I would guess Blanford was missing. All 9 should see considerable playing time.

Waverly looked good against an outmanned East squad. I was very impressed with the play of the exchange student as well as the transfer from PV. I didnt not mean to omit them from my observation, just trying to think of things off the top of my head.

From what I have seen, I think that the crowds have been getting better over the years. Most just don't stay for the whole thing.

As for putting SOC I against SOC II, the alternative would be to either play someone you have to play twice during the regular season (like Clay vs. Green) or combining your league with another league--like SVC or OVC. Would you rather drive to Chillicothe for the preview? Or how about Fairland or South Point?

Personally, I think it is nice to play against someone you don't usually play against during the season and without the distance involved in the other options. The previews are not about winning. It is a chance for the fans to get a little taste of the season and the league to raise the money it needs to buy the league trophies and all-SOC plaques for the players at the end of the season.

ignert1, I have to disagree that the SOC II schools use the previews to destroy the smaller schools. If the big schools really wanted to destroy the smaller schools, the coach would not sub. I think the problem is when the larger schools go to the bench for a sub they have better talent to select from than the smaller schools. I am not trying to be mean just stating facts IMO. Good luck to your son this year.

The league functions all season based upon the gate for the preview. Coaches should maximize these two quarters by preparing their teams just like a regular season game. It is a good thing to get your kids(especially the young guys) acclimated to playing with full scale officials, score clocks and crowds in a game-like situation. Instead of complaining about the preview, the coach should embrace the opportunity.

IMO, I think the coaches would rather have a controlled scrimmage so they can work on specific things.

I for one would not want to be in Alvin Carpenter's shoes for anything this year. Loads of talent, eight or nine boys deep. Shame they dont want to play team ball. I can only imagine dealing with the parents of this group of boys! Alvin if you survive this year you need to run for public office, it couldnt be any tougher. I am in your corner Alvin, you were hired to do this job by the board. Good luck and I will be cheering for our boys no matter who you decide to play or not play.

I have to agree with popcorn. Carpenter is in a tough spot. With all that talent fans are going to expect a great season. He better have some earplugs handy and turn the answering machine off because his phone is gonna be ringing off the hook from angry parents wanting to know why their star son is not starting or getting to play as much as the other parents star son! With all the stars on this team we wont need the gym lights this year. LOL

Hope we win every game and every kid scores twenty points a game and has ten steals and fifteen rebounds per game.

I find it very hard to believe that Alvin as ever said anything about the Payne boy going to be the star because of who he is. I've known Alvin for years, and he would never say anything like that. Maybe he just didn't want to show anything in the previews?? They mean absolutely nothing.
Also you shouldn't say things about the Payne kid at all. I knew him from where he came from and this kid is a VERY good kid.
