I think Hyland's numbers are good enough to be considered "great" no matter what era you're talking about. He has the yardage + the yds/carry to make his numbers phenominal.

I must confess I don't know all of the players back before 1965, but this would be my modern team!

TB - Joe Ross/Randy Hall
FB - Randy Hardy
QB - J.D. Humphries/Steve Murphy
WB - Scott Dutey
TE - Leo Johnson/Steve Carey
T - Shannon Neal/Benny Young
G - Greg Carmon/Ryan Edwards
C - Terry Jackson

That team would be very tough to beat! Great Backs and a BIG, STRONG, lline of scrimmage!

I was fortunate enought to play with 5 of these guys, and they were some dandys. I feel honored to be mentioned with such a fine group.Carmon played tackle though.

Not going to quesiton Hylands numbers but what did they do for the team. How many games did they win/How many OVC titles did they win? I believe that when you mention a running back from Coal Grove as being great those two things need to be taken into consideration.

I agree that you have to take these things into consideration. I don't think Hyland was the most talented guy to ever run the ball at the Grove and I don't think he played on some of the most talented teams at Coal Grove. . . but those are facts that make me appreciate his numbers even more.
He played during a transition period between the worst era of Coal Grove football and what has become a resurgence of the football program. His numbers bridged the gap and what Coal Grove football accomplished in the '04 and '05 seasons laid the foundations for the turn-around that has taken place with the three consecutive OVC titles and this year's return to the playoffs.
From the '99 through to '03 seasons, Coal Grove won 3 conference games and 11 games games overall in those 5 dismal seasons. They hadn't won a conference game in 2 years. In Hyland's junior and senior years, the Grove won 6 OVC games and 13 overall.
No, these teams don't have any trophies or any stand-out wins. But hopefully this marked the beginning of a new, long era - a return to the normal standards of Coal Grove football. The thing that sticks out about these teams is Hyland's numbers.

you can name many on here being in the grove about all my life it is easy to name many running backs and a few ob's but some of the greats were on the line as well or def side i remember alot of good players but as some great backs i remember some awsome line men as well pat b from the 86 team was a player who never quit untill the whistle blew aron brammer was a great center line backer who went on and i think started 4yrs at wvtech. john fields was a animal hall was too rb's were awsome but i remember seeing alot of long td's being from huge holes in the line and great cuts off downfield blocks. if highland would have had some more downfield blocking he would have been even better i can remember backs saying how awsome to see a jersy of his own to cut off of davis was great at this and was a great back. i have seen many great names on here jerry fields had to be one of the top ones. hardy, mcknight, davis, hall, steve murphy, markins, ross, on the d side bill nance we have had some awsome players. everyone has a opinion. some linemen young, carmen, brammer, pat bokovitz, hall, fields. there was a back from way back that i herd of that played on the old tanks team as well chad norris herd stories of him.
