Last week against Parkersburg South it was 16 - 2 w/ Athens receiving 16 flags.

An Interception "taken away" by the officials when the Athens player went down with the ball in both arms and the South player had his hand in between the ball and the chest. The Athens player came to his feet with the ball . . . no struggle. Touchdown South! Obvious a homer call!?

A picture perfect block on a punt return called as a clip. Head in front, shoulder pads on the front numbers - video text book example of a proper block. CLIP! Homered again!

Versus Warren:

Pass Interference call by the umpire against Athens in the Warren game during Warren's go ahead drive on a game winning drive. Homer call!?

Simultaneous possession goes to the offense every time by rule, so no interception taken away. I have heard from many, many other Athens that the refs cost you the game against Warren though.

Just for the record, it was not simultaneous possession (unless the NFHS rules allow for "one hand on the ball while it's in another player's arms" to be considered possession).

As always, there has been both good and bad officiating. But as always, it has had little to do with Athens' losses. Athens has three losses because they made some mistakes early on. They now have two wins because they are getting better each week they play and are limiting those mistakes.

Athens is back on grass, and down at Pomeroy no less. Athens minimizes the penalties and turnovers (less than 2), they will enjoy the ride home. Otherwise, the Mauraders will come away with the win.

Athens has three losses because they made some mistakes early on. They now have two wins because they are getting better each week they play and are limiting those mistakes.

I also need to add that the teams they have lost to are very good teams. I did not mean to take anything away from Gallia, Coal Grove, or Warren when I said "Athens has three losses because they made some mistakes..."

In fact Rutter Athens won or tied for 11 out of 12 league titles last year in the TVC Ohio. Unsurpassed domination in fact in the history of the TVC. Just a fact, not opinion. Back to the game. This game in the past ten years has pretty much been a blowout one way or the other. I think this year it is close.
