Highlight Tapes for Potential College Athletes
Highlight Tapes for Potential College Athletes
If a parent asked a coach to, should a coach make a highlight tape for an athlete that wants to try to play college football?
Or at least give the parent a copy of the game films, so the parent can put one together.

They should give them a copy of game tapes, I would think it is the athletes responsibility to put forth the effort to make a highlight tape. With most teams recording on dvd's now, it's very easy to put all the seasons games on one disc.

I would be shocked if a coach wouldn't give a player copies of game tape. I don't know what school or anything you're talking about, but from the outside looking in I wouldn't agree with that at all. Would you care to give some more info on the situation boogerred?

Most coaches don’t film a thing. The video taping is often done by non-school personnel.
Usually, you have individuals that tape games for "profit" and supply the coaches with a free copy. It’s a win-win situation for the coaches and schools. The coach and school don’t have to buy expensive equipment and the coach gets a free game tape to review. The video folks hopefully can sell a few items at the end of the season.
Highlight tapes take a great deal of time to edit and create. You have to watch every game and pull out the right moments. You are talking about watching about 10 hours of film just for starters. By the time it is all completed, I could see 20 to 40 hours in such a project.
Parents simply don’t want to buy the item. They ALL want a FREE highlight tape. They often get quite demanding about it too.
They just don’t think the time of others is worth anything. It’s just me…me… me!
Besides, college coaches DONâ€T want to see a highlight tape. Typically, they ask for two complete game tapes. They want to see the bad plays as well as those highlights.
The game tapes belong to the video crew. They did the work and invested money into equipment. Most coaches tend to respect that fact and will not hand you every game tape without consulting the videographer. If the coach did so, how could the video group sell anything? The free video crew with the expensive equipment would just quit on the coach...right? Plus, most coaches want to control these game tapes out of fear that the wrong hands...possible opponents...would get a copy.
If a player is a college recruit, the video crew and coach will get together and agree to mail off whole game tapes directly to the university. That usually is done for free or at cost.
If you want personal copies, I would buy a camera or be prepared to open your wallet.

Re: Highlight Tapes for Potential College Athletes
I will agree that in my experiences colleges want two game films.
But, as my question stated, if a parent requested a tape be made should the coach being willing to help?

As for the lead pipe beating, I don't thinnk anyone really deserves that. Although sometimes we feel that needs to be done, we cannot do things like that. We are no longer living in the caves and cannot just bash people over the head with our clubs.

Re: Highlight Tapes for Potential College Athletes
In the last 6 years of making films for colleges, I've only had one school ask for a highlight and that was for a camp for Juniors prior to their Senior year. (BGSU) Every other college wanted two films.
Speaking of recruiting films, most colleges will send coaches information asking them to send films along will information about players they think can play at the next level. Today I made copies of two games to be sent to five different universities.
I do know there are some high school that have private companies that film their games for them. The companies copyright the games, so they can sell them at the end of the season. They usually give the coach trade films for the regular season and sometimes a complete season at the end of the year.
By the way if you can get the coachcomm video program it's great. Film goes straight on a laptop, and when it comes time to edit a highlight film it's cut to a fraction. This year it took me about 20 minutes to select clips, edit, add music and effects to create a highlight reel for each game.
The last comment I have to make is be prepared to be frustrated in the whole recruiting game. I have felt that in the past few years that I have sent film on at least one DI athlete, the best QB and FS I've ever been around, only to see team after team pass on him. Good grades, good scores, great junior, senior year, plenty of post-season awards, but no DI football takers. I know that I sent film on him and one of his linemen to at least twenty different scholarship awarding schools, and neither got an offer.

Schools tend to decide who they want WELL in advance of a kid's senior year...

Re: Highlight Tapes for Potential College Athletes
Maybe at the big schools, but the other 85% of schools don't even know who is out their until late junior or into their senior year. Most schools don't have private film makers, most have their own equipment that is used by a guy that volunteers to do this. I had to do my own tape and that was back when it was the big cassette tape ('77) for VT and ETSU. Watched alot of tape during recruiting time of some bad players and some great ones with alot of in betweeners. It is better to find to game tapes, not a highlight tape. I didn't want to see what you did right as much as how you played the whole game. How you dealt with changes in the game, came back from mistakes and adversity.

Anyone interested in FB/BB game tapes of SOC 1 and some others, go to the Chat forum and read the "Its not OBDTF but we are all going have a get together" thread for a one time opportunity. This Saturday only. Football for the last two years and some prior.

I know of a person that made one for his son and put it on youtube. He told me that I took three days to load 7 games on the computer, close to 10 hours to watch/cut/ and add effects. Pretty neat 3 minute video IMO. check it out on youtube, charles kish football in the search and you will find it.

Really nice high light videos are being made for athletes by Josh Basil who is the oldest brother of Chillicothe kicker / punter Drew Basil. You can check out videos made by Basil at www.scoutingohio.com. Videos for Drew Basil, Caleb Knights, and Shay Netter are all available to be seen at this site. If you like what you see, get in touch with Josh and start making plans for the 09 season, his contact information is at the end of each video!
