What is the latest with the football coaching position through your eyes? I haven't seen many posts since interviews started. I saw one being given a tour by Tom Jenkins the other evening, wow, that was a surprise. I was anticipating the AD, Super, or HS Princ. to be showing the new coaches the facility. Disappointed to hear that looking for more head coaching experience, according to an earlier post. I'm sure everyone started their first head coaching job without head coaching experience. Someone chose to overlook that and had faith in other aspects they saw. We need a coach that can get the kids back onto the field. A school of our size should have more players than we have on the field. We need to start with a new attitude. What are your thoughts on the process. Hey, maybe we can talk at the girls tournament game tonight. :122249 Hope to speak with you about it then.

Go Ironmen

i not understand the choice of this tour guide either. :?

I'm pretty sure they wouldn't have brought Coach Mays in for an interview if they weren't considering him. After interviewing him, it's possible that they like him just as much as the other candidates, but have decided to go with someone with more experience. I guess what I'm trying to say is this. If you have two guys that you like equally, but one has more experience as a head coach, wouldn't you pick the guy with more experience? I have no idea if that's how things are playing out, but as I said, I highly doubt that they would bring Coach Mays in for an interview if they already knew they weren't going to hire him no matter what. That would be a waste of time for both parties.

I was with Coach Mays during the walkthrough of the facilities. Very impressive to say the least. I just hope Jackson hires a guy that can get that program to level it needs to be.

I heard that at least 2 of the guys interviewed had no head coaching experience, so I don't believe that they decided in advance that they had to hire someone with prior head coaching experience. It could have just been that as someone else pointed out, that they felt the guys that had head coaching experience interviewed better. I too, agree that it is impossible to get head coaching experience if no one ever gives a person their first chance, but on the other hand, it is probably also hard for a person without that experience to beat out a person who has been there and done that.
I also heard that they had at least one high school English job and one high school History opening and that the Super was unwilling to make up a teaching job that they didn't really need.
I asked one of the committee members how many more interviews were left and he said they were done. He made it sound as if they had made a decision and the Supt is wrapping things up with that person. I asked him who it was and he said he wasn't at liberty to discuss it but that he was sure the Supt will be making a recommendation at the next board meeting.
He said he was impressed with all that were interviewed and that Kight or whoever had done the screening had selected good choices for the committee. He also reminded me that there were over 30 apps and just to even get to the interview round was pretty impressive.
I think the AD or the Supt provided the tour for some of them and on the ones where the interviews were scheduled back to back Tom Jenkins Asst Supt ( was not on the committe ) provided the tour so the interview process could continue without interruption.
Hopefully we will know pretty soon - I don't think the next board meeting is for a couple more weeks.

I will give Jackson administrators credit seems like nobody has a clue who is left at this point. No leaks from any of them. I would have to guess we will hear something very soon.

I would think it would be smart to keep things quite until the next board meeting. Until the board votes on it, nothing is for certain anyway, no matter what the applicant has been told. From an outsiders point of view, it looks like things have been handled pretty professionally.

Since Donnie Mays' name was released as a finalist, why can't we get the list of all finalists? Who else was interviewed.

I would also like to know who the finalists were. I understand that the administration and the committee members probably won't talk about who they interviewed because some of the guys who interviewed and didn't get the job might not want their current employer to know they were looking at leaving. Heck, look what happened to the guy at Boston College for going and talking to the Jets! BC told him if he applied for that job he better get it or they were going to fire him and they did.
The friend of Mays ( buckeyes3645 ) posted that he was interviewed and then posted that he didn't get the job. You would have to think that these other people that were interviewed told someone they were getting an interview. Kind of makes me want to believe that the people interviewed were all not even remotely close from around here or else there is no way people wouldn't be talking about who they were. Having said that though, the committee member I talked to was very tight lipped, but I believe he did tell me that there was only one finalist that was from out of state, so that was obviously Mays. Surely, with a 7 member committee and with the candidates themselves knowing, someone will break and let a cat or two out of the bag.
My guess is that they only interviewed people that would fit the teaching openings they had. Could have been some strong candidates that they didn't bother to interview because they had no teaching opeings in their area of certification.

It's funny to follow this thread, I don't have a dog in the fight but I kind of feel sorry for the guy who is named head coach. There seems to be a few vulchers on here ready to chew the guy up. Hopefully for the new guys sake that these parents would at least meet the new coach and get to know what he is abou before getting on here and start blasting him.

Good luck to whoever gets the job. You will have some of the finest facilities in the state, tradition, and great community support. If you put in the work, great things can be done. I am a little disheartened when I hear people make excuses saying that Jackson lacks athletes. If you just wait on great players to appear its not going to happen. You have to develop them.

JohnKnight....Actually, Donnie Mays' name has only been released as a finalist for the Jackson High School head football coaching job on this site to my knowledge.

It has not appeared in any print or broadcast media.

OK, I thought we had a pipeline to the Supt. He ought to break the news here if the decision has been made.
Why not?

He is not going to break the news here. You would be waiting a long time if you are looking for him to break it on here.

He has to recommend a candidate to the board who then votes. That is how it is done.

The next regular board meeting is Tuesday March 10 for those who wanted to know the answer to that question.

JohnKnight...I get sarcasm, but failed to see it in your post. Sorry.

If I can offer a suggestion, and if you don't get easily offended, try using the smilies in your posts to point that out.

Again, you can't see someone's facial expressions or body language on a message board.
