Best All-Time Coach in Gallia County

Post by boogerred »

Who is the best football coach all time in Gallia County? (when I say Gallia County that includes both the county schools and Gallia Academy.)

How do you define that? By playoff appearances?

If I am correct, only one Gallia County head coach took a team to the playoffs before the system expanded in the late 1990s.

People will define it however they see fit. Some will say be playoff appearances; others may use winning percentage. I don't car what they use as a basis as long as they have a reason for saying what they say.

1. Brent Saunders (Gallia Academy) -- four playoff appearances (I think), including one before the expanded playoffs and six divisions.

2. Matt Bokovitz (Gallia Academy) -- Four playoff appearances in seven seasons.

3. Justy Burleson (South Gallia) -- Two playoff appearances.

There were some good ones at Kyger Creek back in the day.

And didn't the Southwestern team almost make the playoffs in the 1980s?

My vote goes to Coach Saunders. His record speaks for itself but what most people dont realize is what he started with and how he built the program to what is is today..respected around southern Ohio. His first team went 0-10 and 2 years later took them to the playoffs for the first time in school history (before the expanded playoffs). His players respected him and the ones I speak with now still do. Not sure the program would have been as successful as it has in the past 25 years if he hadn't have come back home to GAHS.

From gahsforever's post:

Others who deserve consideration for jobs well done include Frank Blake at North Gallia, Jack James, Mel Coen, Tripplett, and of course Matt Bokovich of Gallia Academy.

When did Triplett have any real success coaching in Gallia County? 3-7, 4-6, and 4-5 usually does not qualify as success. I love the bearded ba$tard (loving term for him) but the most success he had in Gallia County was when he was coaching against Gallia County teams when he was at Symmes Valley.

Larry Cremeans needs to be mentiones even though Tom Jones got a lot of credit for the success of those teams.

I'll mention Greg Deel. I believe he had some nice teams at North Gallia.

By the way, Coach Saunders is a great call too as is Coach Blake.
