Piketon High School Coaching Staff
Piketon High School Coaching Staff
Is the the first time in history that there are no teachers on the Piketon Basketball staff?
Am I just too old school, I always liked having that interaction on a daily basis at school with the coaches. Seems like they kept a better eye on the players that way!

its been like that in a few sports at piketon. i agree with you HBK there is something about being around school and the players all day. there is that extra bond and yes the coach can keep an extra eye on things.

I know that Minford has also moved to coaches that are not working as a teacher in District. Personally, I believe that is a big mistake because of the reasons already stated
Not saying the staff at either place can'r "coach." But, at the high school level, I want my kids to play for someone that can mentor them beyond "X's and O's" and you can't do that as well if the only time a coach sees their players is at practice or games. Just my 1 1/2 cents ( a little shy of 2 cents)

Who cares.....I played high school basketball, football, and baseball and never seen my coaches and they were all teachers! That doesn't mean crap....if the coach needs to be in school to keep an EYE on things....hire him as a security guard and not pay him to be an EDUCATOR! Piketon has some of the most caring and respected coaches in Southern Ohio and based on what I've seen in the past five years, the players have demonstrated outstanding sportsmanship.

If coaches still teach like they did when I was in school then it's probably a good thing they aren't teaching. I remember the coaches at the Burg back when I was in school would just come into the class and say "Read chapter 12" and then they would leave and come back with about 15 minutes left in class and give us a quiz on the chapter.
Now that's some fine teaching methods right there. lol

i am a teacher and a coach fellows and i teach my class and they work hard in my class all the time. you are a STUDENT FIRST athlete second and that is why it helps for the coach to be there. it used to be a state law that you had to teach to coach and i look for that to come back again real soon.thyis is not a cut to the coaches that are not teachers, some are very capable and do just fine. some other advantages we had when i played was that during study hall if your grades were good the coach would get you out to lift wts, work on your shooting, or throw and work on the baseball field. we had to shoot 50 free throws during my study hall and chart them. we shot 50 more that nite = 100 per day this extra stuff would not have happened if coach was not there, there were more advantages but these are just a few. i myself dont have a real problem with non-certified people are coaching but if there is a person who is just as good or qualified in the system they should be hired.

Good coaches are usually good teachers. I like the idea of coaches being in the school during the day.

Today, there are just too many sports in schools and not enough teachers who want to coach. This will continue to be an issue. It's either have coaches who do not teach or do not offer certain sports. That won't cut it with Title IX. Many young teachers coach when they first start teaching because that helps them get their first teaching position. However after a few years in some cases and quite a few years in other cases, the coaches decide that it is too much time for too little pay. They also are having children of their own and want to spend more time with their families.

I agree bucknut. While there are advantages to having a coach "in the building" most schools manage pretty well with the alternative too. Most districts operate with the policy that if someone in the building is qualified and wants the job it goes to them first. I just cant see giving someone a coaching job just because they teach in the building if they aren't qualified.

Come On who cares if they teach or not. if a kid has a coach in class and the coach gets made at the student about someting he then carries it over to practice. I always liked seeing somebody besides one of my teachers coaching. Just because you are a teacher does not mean you are going to be a good coach. the last time I checked Piketon`s head coach played on a State Champion team at Portsmouth in the 70`s. My God people what more do you want, do you want a Gym teacher or math teacher coaching your team or someone who has been to the State Final and won it. You people need to get a clue. Good day Clones!

Lighten up there Bball.
No one is ragging on the coaches, I think the current staff does a wonderful job. Just discussing a trend in teams today.
You might need to see someone for some anger management! ha!

Re: Piketon High School Coaching Staff
this may be the funniest post I've read...The stories are killing me..especially the one about the fog and running the laps until the teacher couldn't see him any longer...Now that is funnY!
We may not have teachers, per say....but how many staffs have a Deputy Warden, a Computer Engineer, a Financial Banker, a Corrections Officer, a Security Guard/Radio announcer, and a Pharmacist on staff??? Talk about sacrifice! We're all parents, too! ....and my wife and mother-in-law are teachers, does that count? LoL
Coach Lisath has participated in 2 state championships; I have participated in one Ohio State Final Four, one NAIA national tournament (sweet 16)....Several sectional, district, and regional games between this staff.
Thanks for the support! It means a lot to us! Go Streaks!

Re: Piketon High School Coaching Staff
I think the coaching staff does a great job, i used to coach with them, i should know.
I also think that its getting harder and harder to find people in the school district that wants to coach. (I know there are some good coaches in the districts that don't want to deal with some of the headaches) I would much rather take a person that WANTS to be there and wants to teach the kids about the game rather than a teacher thats there just because they are looking for some extra dough or because they got asked about it by an administrator.
Coaches that aren't teachers have the disadvantage that they don't see what the boys are doing during the day and can't really relate to any issues that happened AT SCHOOL, but the advantage is that they can give the players another ear to listen to that is outside of the school. I know alot of players will feel more comfortable coming to their coach rather than a teacher. And if you coach your kids well, you shouldn't have a problem with them in school. (ie. discipline, attendance, etc.)
I've said for far too long that people need to stand behind coaches, no matter if they are at the school during the day or not!

At the end of the day it is still all about the W`s if you win and do things the right way, it doesn`t matter whether you are a teacher or not. Just because someone is a teacher and works at the school doesn`t mean they are the right person for the job. It should entitle a teacher to be chosen as the coach just because they work there. Too many teachers think they can coach. Wrong!!!!
