If memory servers me correct doesn't a coach teach the game. Where does it say that you have to have a teaching certificate to coach? Besides who would you rather have as a coach a Math teacher or someone who played the game?
Re: Piketon High School Coaching Staff
Just to keep this from getting too silly, you guys all know that typically people who are teachers and coaches did play the game. That is usually why they become teachers, so they can coach.
Don't act like there are random English teachers walking around coaching.

Re: Piketon High School Coaching Staff
that's exactly 1 of the reasons i became a teacher. the next best thing to not being able to play any more was to coach and since i am not doing basketball right now, but i will again one of these days, is radio broadcasting. it kind of keeps me around the game and i love coaching and broadcasting so it does keep me busy. i also love teaching and i would not trade it for the world.

Re: Piketon High School Coaching Staff
I personally know most of the coaches in the Piketon system and I will say all are great role models. That being said there are a lot of great teachers that are great coaches. I laugh at the comment that you would rather have someone who played the game coach.lol Not everyone who played make a good coach, just like not everyone who is a teacher can coach. Obviously, no teacher in the Piketon School system that is qualified wants to coach. Thus the team and district is in great hands.
Good luck
Coach Kelly reading these boards during the season will drive you nuts.
Good Luck vs Adena

Joe South commented that a coach teaches the game, this is why most coaches are teachers. I think Piketon has an excellent assistant coaching staff.

I can vouch for Jim Stanley of the Red Streak staff. He has worked with Coach Lisath for many years and knows his system well and I'm sure he is able to relate to the players.
Re: Piketon High School Coaching Staff
Did Stanley ever play ball and if so does anyone have any video of it! ha!

Some of the greatest coaches in high school were and still are teachers. School boards are supposed to hire the most qualified for a teaching position. Why not coaches? Legg would look good in a pinstripe suit and a Big Top Hat and maybe a cane but he still wouldn't look as good as Stanley. Funny Funny!! I would pay to see it!
Re: Piketon High School Coaching Staff
This is a pretty amazing topic. Actually I feel the way it should be is the best qualified person that applies for the job should hired and it shouldn’t have anything do with whether they are a teacher or not. Just arbitrarily giving it to a teacher is ridicules and stupid. I am not saying that there isn’t any qualified teachers that couldn’t do the job there are plenty out there that can. All I am saying is just because you’re a teacher you shouldn’t just be handed the job based on that merit alone. For one I have a son playing on this team and being a coach myself I understand all that goes into all this and this Piketon team has a very good staff put together from 7th grade up to varsity and I am glad he is getting the proper guidance from coaches that know what they are doing and have the experience and credentials as well. The English teacher with no experience need to stay in the class room and teach my son English and leave the basketball teaching to a basketball teacher and that is exactly what a coach is a teacher of basketball and like all academics I want the best basketball teacher teaching my son. I feel Piketon has done just that with this coaching staff and I am not putting myself in that category or tooting my own horn because I know there are plenty better then myself. I am referring to all the other coaches. As for teaching these kids more then basketball this staff does just that. They are helping mold some very good young men into being great role models, citizens and young adults and preparing them for life as well. So with this staff it goes way beyond basketball as it should for any staff. Not only are these kids just players they are part of the Piketon Redstreak basketball family and that is how they are treated and taught. So plain and simple the best qualified person you can find for the job needs to the one hired and the key word is qualified. If a teacher is that person then hire them however if it is a prison warden or prison guard or computer tech or banker or pharmacist then hire them as well. But I do feel this is one of the best staffs Piketon has ever had and we all need to get behind them and support them.

Could this trend have anything to do with BOE's wanting to keep good teachers raising OGT/OAT scores?? I think this is a major consideration in their minds. 10-15 years ago this was not a concern. When you get good teachers in roles where they and the kids are successful you don't want to screw it up for athletics. To be honest hiring an "out of district" coach is string free. if he dosn't work out non-renew them. You don't have to worry about having a coach who can't teach getting tenure and having to keep them in the district.
Also, today's professional educator has a load of work just keeping their certification current. You see more and more coaches doing the 5 or 6 year stint and having to go back to school. I've seen this in every sport. This factor makes it very hard for young coaches to have longevity.
Another point that should be made is the almighty $. I have seen several good teacher/coaches move into other vocations because of money. No one can fault them for that.

Amen to the recertification issue, I have a masters in education and I still have to go back and take two reading courses because my undergrad was lacking! That means 4 trips a week to Portsmouth Shawnee for me for the next 15 weeks! Not counting the money to pay for it.
I agree cursor, I had the oppurtunity to take the AD job along with my first year teaching entry program this year and I am busier than a one leg man in a butt kicking contest. Throw on top of that these two classes I have to take and I barely have time to breath.
BOE's more than likely will not take an inadequate teacher just to coach anymore, to many people in society just looking for an excuse to hound them! lol
There are only a handful of teachers in our district that have the qualifications to coach varsity basketball, and most are already doing other sports, or who are like me and too busy trying to keep their teaching job! I think our staff is just fine!
