Disappointing to think that I spent the last few weeks excited thinking that this region might escape Ursuline U. only to have another fish frier sneak in at the last second and draw MC in the first round.

Aquinas is a bit more level to D5 though. Probably out MC's league, but Crestview and Kirtland probably can beat them. Any of the other teams I really thought MC could play with, and wish they could be playing one of them.

If there are any Monroe Central fans that would like to talk about the game with St. Thomas Aquinas this week, I can tell you a few things about STA and this game.

Also, I'm not trying to take folks away from this site or anything, but I saw there is already a lengthy thread on the Monroe-Central vs. St. Thomas Aquinas game going on another site:

Also, just to make it clear....St. Thomas Aquinas is not anything like Youngstown Ursuline. Here's how a St. Thomas fan describes it:

"STA is certainly not Youngstown Ursuline (or anything like that). We're not as arrogant, haven't dominated like they have, don't have a team full of city kids from poor public school districts, etc. Our area public schools aren't anything like Youngstown city schools. We have Canton McKinley, Glenoak, and other powerful football teams with great success and tradition in our area (Marlington, Louisville, etc.). A lot of the most talented players go to those schools. In contrast, in Youngstown, the city schools have been a mess for years, so Ursuline offers kids a great opportunity for a better education (and a better football program). In Youngstown, a lot of the best players go to Ursuline as they don't have powerful city programs like McKinley, Glenoak, etc.

In addition, STA got smoked by Ursuline last year (52-14) and likewise in other previous years when we played them. Like a lot of Region 17 teams over the years, Aquinas isn't capable of handling the size, speed, depth and talent of Ursuline.

I get the feeling the tendency down there in SE Ohio is to lump all Catholic schools from NE Ohio together. 98% of STA's players come from about 4-5 small Catholic grade schools in Eastern Stark County (a couple of them very small and at risk of not staying open). Most of the players probably live within a 15 minute radius of the school (NE portion of Canton, North Canton, Plain Township, Louisville, Alliance).

Yes we're a Catholic school too, but a very different makeup, different types of players, different fanbase, different community, and overall different kind of school and football program from Ursuline (and other similar schools).

STA is a lot more similar to a Steubenville Catholic Central, but a little larger of a school than SCC." That's a far cry from an Ursuline. In fact, STA used to play SCC regularly and had many good, close game against them (both teams won their share).

Hope that helps....Many STA fans I know are looking forward to making the trip south on Friday....they've heard many favorable things about the good people down there and about the old-fashioned friendliness of Monroe County residents and fans.

Most STA fans I know are friendly nice folks too....should be a good crowd and a good game.

We (Lucasville Valley) played them back in '06 and I agree whole-heartidly with your post and the description given by the STA fan. I have a tremendous amount of respect for STA. They seem to typically field a solid team that plays a strong schedule. The thing I like about them is that they are an excellent example of the type of schedule that our SE Ohio teams should work hard to play, in order to prepare themselves for the playoffs. I would love to be able to watch this game, but my Indians will be hosting Ridgewood in the Region 19 Quarterfinals the same night. Anyone interested in exchanging numbers and passing updates along?
