National Hoops Classic @ Wellston

Post by chillout »

I know Chillicothe plays at 8 against Mt. Zion Academy out of North Carolina (alumni of Tracy McGrady as well). What does the rest of the schedule look like for the day?

I remember this tournament used to be much bigger than it has been in recent years. Not sure why it is smaller and less national in scope, but I hope it grows in the future to what it used to be. It seems to me that this was one of the bigger national classics in the state of Ohio at one time.

Man, this tourney has really went down hill since it's heyday when it was in Cloumbus. This tourney hasn't been the same since it went back to Wellston.

The problem with this classic is that it WAS NOT supported by the people of Ohio. You can like Coach Derrow or not but he did more in a few years to bring elite high school teams to Ohio than any guy around. Teams such as Oak Hill Academy, St. John's Prospect Hall, Montrose Christian, Mt. Zion Christian, Laurenburg Institute, Newport Academy, Brentwood Academy, DeMatha and many others were just a few of the teams to grace this classic. People could pay $12-14 and watch elite teams all day long but for whatever reason, they had trouble keeping a coporate sponsor. I loved going to Columbus to watch these games.

This tourney is the same time as the Flying To The Hoop here in Dayton. This tourney was just rated by ESPN prep as one of the top 5 prep tourneys to see. They have teams from California, Nevada, Georgia, and West Virginia. They usually have a team from New York in it also. I know that Columbus Northland is playing a team from San Deigo that has the 7th ranked center in the nation. This is a 3 day tourney. With teams from Cincy and Cleveland in it also.

Alabama mike, I agree with you. I used to look forward to this tournament every year, whether it was in the Convo or Batelle Hall in Columbus. Coach Derrow and his staff did a great job with this showcase. Any information on the Detroit Consortium team that Wellston will play ?

Gimmee a break! Not only do you get to see some good teams from outside the area but it's also a great experience for our local teams. Plus, I would think by scheduling teams from the immediate area, it is a plus for attendance.

Why don't you step out from behind your screen name and tell these kids and coaches that they are jokes to their face?

Didn't Wellston have the stones to play ASVSM with Lebron, or am I confused? I sure as hell don't see Alexander lining up to play a team 1/4th the caliber of that team........

At least Wellston and Chilli are getting the exposure to a much higher quality of opponent than they would ever see in SE Ohio.

I'm just saying, why not schedule some decent teams from the area. Oak Hill, Vinton County, Alexander are all close, just to name a few.

I don't know if that was stones or stupidity. Didn't they lose by about 100 points?

Would you rather have STUPID tatooed on your forehead and have the opportunity to say that you played against Lebron, or not have the tatoo on your forehead and say that you were a chickensh*t, which would it be, there boy genius?

Your insults to people on this website are a very clear indication of your shallow thinking.........

Was it ASVSM that beat Wellston by almost 100 points or was it Oak Hill Academy?

It was Oak Hill Academy that won by something like 126-30. They played ASVSM earlier that year, but only played a half due to losing power in the gym. I think SVSM won by 40-50.

You would think Steeley Dan you would be a grown up and just ignore the fact he is being a smart***. He is obviously a kid that like stirring things up. Im sure Coach Gabriel would have no problem playing Lebron James. I know they haven't played any teams close to the ability Lebron had but their non-conference schedule has been pretty tough. All Lebron did was get Wellston ready for OVC. ( The kid is coming out of me know, your starting to rub off on me Steeley) ;-)

ASVSM almost beat Oak Hill Academy in Lebron's sophmore year. Loved going to Batelle. I'd really like to hit the Flying to the Hoops fest in Dayton sometime.
