Athens @ Nelsonville-York - 1/23
Re: Athens @ Nelsonville-York - 1/23
I guess when a schools sports program is down they chant it so they can let you know that even if they aren't any good at sports they are better then you at academics. It sounds silly if you ask me. I think a lot of people expected Athens to do a lot better then they have. It will be interesting to see if there is a change at the end of the year if the situation doesn't improve.
Re: Athens @ Nelsonville-York - 1/23
Sounds like the Athens kids were just showing some clever school spirit. Looks like the Athens Nelsonville rivalry is really growing with the Bulldogs in the TVC. I think it will be the same with Alexander.
Re: Athens @ Nelsonville-York - 1/23
It is so interesting to me to hear that chant. I will give you that Athens DOES have a superior academic program than most schools in the area. But then they should. I mean you have a bigger tax base than ALL schools in the area with Ohio U, County Government and any factories that are located in Athens. You also attract a larger pool of children that come from academia and most likely are better informed than most.
Having said that, there are plenty of students that will go to college and be successful in their chosen fields from all schools in the area. I guess this is sort of like going on a HS quiz show, losing and then proclaiming we beat you at football. For being so smart, this is a pretty idiotic thing to say. However, these are HS students and should be forgiven for a ridiculous chant. I am sure the NY fans were laughing at what was certainly a case of grasping at straws.

Buckfan, having Ohio University hurts Athens Schools tax base since Ohio University is tax exempt. Just like the Forest hurts Nelsonville and Trimble.
Only people that I have seen think Athens was going to roll is the fans from the other TVC schools. Outside of Larry Dallas I have not heard one person diss the league. Also it is not like athens is the basement, I believe Athens has won a few Titles already, will probably win the wrestling title and could be very successful in the spring sports.

The league championship count to date is probably in favor of the Bulldogs, and the wrestling is probably the next to fall to Athens. Athens was a good addition to the league, evidenced by the digging back and forth, it is fun to have rivals, just take what each other has with a grain of salt, because it is our rivals who define us. Welcome the Bulldogs, I know Alexander does, it gives them somebody else to "hate" on even though I am pretty sure all of the elitist crap the county schools say about Athens is completely false. Just look up the socioeconomic numbers and the number of underprivleged children that attend Athens, I think most would be surprised how big those numbers are.
Welcome Athens, we are thrilled to have ya because we love to hate ya (nothing personal)

O.U. may be tax exempt but everyone pays the 1% income tax plus other taxes. Athens school taxes are the highest of anyone and they seem to waste a lot of tax payer money. They only get taxes passed because of the O.U. Students who shouldn't be able to vote period.
Re: Athens @ Nelsonville-York - 1/23
Wow so now college kids who are of legal age as defined by the Constitution should not be able to vote? Can not wait until you spin that Athens78! Keep in mind students now pay taxes to the schools in their income tax as well.
As for the income tax that is only 18 months old and is a much more fair tax than property taxes as defined by Ohio Law with the millage floors and limits. Athens was the first district in Ohio to jump on that wagon and it is a good thing. Now Athens schools can get a piece of the Presidents 380K, Franks 280K and the numerous full time faculty who rent. Districts like Wellston have their highest paid employees who contribute nothing to their tax base (it has been forever since rhey have had a superintendent who lives in the district).

Each state establishes its own voting rules regarding college students. Some states are like Ohio and allow students to register to vote where they are living for college. However, other states require year round residency and college students must continue to vote wherever it is they are from. Most states are like Ohio in their voting requirements.
Not bad for someone who graduated from NY and had no hope of going to college, huh?

The income tax isn't the only tax they get, their still getting the other tax also the one they said would
fall off but didn't when the income tax came into play. I just feel that College kids should vote where they are from not where the go to college. Heck most leave after school and don't have to deal with it plus do they have to pay the income tax? I never meant they shouldn't vote they should if they are over 18 just from back where they live and where their parents claim them.

Many University students also call Athens home forever! As far as the schools also getting McDavis and the many large salaries of some profs, how do you figure. Many profs rent and McDavis lives on state property in a house he does not own. And the property tax did come off the books, however thanks to a State formula for educational funding that has been declared unconstitutional FOUR times the existing mills readjusted to higher amounts. An educated voter would have looked that up and known what was going to happen.
In all though, schools are like all other social services, we all want good ones we are just not willing to pay for them.

Re: Athens @ Nelsonville-York - 1/23
Administrators should have been honest with the voters back then instead of telling them at a meeting they would just drop off, but we all know schools bend things to help get these passed. No matter my family has to pay them and I do. Whats the population of Athens? How many O.U. Students are there? Not many stay in Athens after school. McDavis pay increase is a joke.
