You can't leave out legendary Coach John Royster from Vinton County. He finished off a spectacular career with a 20-0 season last year as JV coach. There is no way Combs would have been very successful without John Royster developing his talent for him. Russ Caudill has also been having quite a run lately. I know he had a 15-0 7th grade team last year.

Up to date, Coach Barrick has a 286-65 (81.5%) record at Wheelersburg. Included in this are:
9 SOC titles
12 Sectional Titles (Only two seasons without a sectional title; Wheelersburg has been in the sectional finals every year under Tom Barrick)
7 District Titles
3 Regional Titles
1 State Runner-Up

Other records include:
35 game SOC winning streak (Dec. 2000-Dec.2002)
28 game home winning streak

What was Barrick's record prior to Wheelersburg? I don't believe it was even .500, was it?

Answered this question in a different thread last week

Coach Barrick spent one year as an assistant coach at Fort Frye. He then spent 4 years (1986-89) as the head coach at Jewett-Scio HS, and then moved on to Morgan HS (1990-94) before taking the head coaching position at Wheelersburg. At both J-S and Morgan, Coach Barrick's record was around 61-125 (around that). Both of these were rebuilding projects; Barrick's first season at each school were a struggle (0-3 wins); however, Barrick worked and developed these teams into consistent winners.

Whether or not he belongs on this list is a matter of opinion, but no one can dispute what Matt Combs has done for the basketball program at Vinton County. Here are a few numbers: In the previous 22 sesaons before his arrival, Vinton County had a record of 180-286 (.387 win pct.), with 3 sectional titles and 0 TVC championships. During his 9 years as head coach the Vikings have a record of 137-53 (.721 win pct.) with 3 sectional titles, 1 district title and 4 TVC championships (and in the running for a 5th this year). The Vikings have also won 55 of their last 59 games. I agree that it may take a few more years of success to rank with the top names on most peoples list, but he's on his way.

How Combs' does in the next five years will seal the deal of him being a great coach.!! Theres no way we can compare him to someon like Larry Jordan who has coached hundreds of kids.

Still amazing what he has done so far 55-of 59 is pretty impressive no matter how you look at it!!

The majority of players that John Royster coached will be gone after next year. After that, look for Combs to stumble a little. Everyone knows he's been living off the talent that Royster has built his whole career.

hey chuckie, we have read on here a debate between fasteach and seobasketballfan that coach ewing was a heck of a better coach than wolfe. does that mean ewing is the greatest of them all? he has won 1 whole qualifying game. isn't that the same as winning the state?
i would put the list like this;
1. god.
2. mike k.
3. ben e.

well i sure would like to see those players running through a brick wall. being from there he may talk them into running into the walls, head first of course. who cares about jv games and jv coaches? can you put that on a job application? "well i won a bunch of jv games when i coached and i got the kids to run into walls for me." that should get him a lot of job offers.

Meigs and Athens are in Vinton County's league and they are both D2. There are no D4 teams in their league. Also, Vinton County made it to regionals last year with Combs at the helm.

I know in the southern hills league, John lawhorn, Dave Young, and Rob Beucler are all top notch coaches. These three coaches will always put a competitive team on the floor.
