Re: Coach fired for running up score 100- 0
I see one HUGE problem: He wouldn't apologize even after it's been pointed out that the kids who have learning differences. 100-0 is not exceptable on any level, especially when playing kids who have these disabilities.
I said it on the other thread and I'll say it again, he would have still got credit for the win if the score was 59-0.

I think they should fire the AD for scheduling the game.....

Some people may be too quick to judge. (You can read the winning coaches full statement at: http://www.flightbasketball.com/100-0-T ... Coach.html) In the words of the winning coach:
The Team. We are hardly the “elite basketball powerhouse†that we are described as in the National and local media. Up until 3 years ago, we rarely had a winning season. In fact, during my first year at Covenant four years ago, we experienced one of our worst seasons - a losing record of only 2 wins and 19 losses that sunk to an 82-6 low in a game that forever changed us and how we approached the game of basketball. Two years later we made the first Final Four appearance in the school’s history. Like Dallas Academy, Covenant is a small Christian school, which is why we are in the same district. We don’t have a home gym so we rent out facilities or gym space in the community so we can practice, and then watch game film at the home of one of the players. We’ve never had a full roster. Only about 30 high school girls attend Covenant and only 8 of those girls play basketball. During many of the games this year, we played with 6 girls, and sometimes only 5. When players fouled out, we’ve had to finish the game with 4. But we always finished the game.
The Game. The game started like any other high school basketball game across the nation. The teams warm-up, coaches talk, the ball is tipped, and then the play begins. We started the game off with a full-court press. After 3 minutes into play, we had already reached a 25-0 lead. Like any rational thinking coach would do, I immediately stopped the full-court press, dropped into a 2-3 zone defense, and started subbing in my 3 bench players. This strategy continued for the rest of the game and allowed the Dallas Academy players to get the ball up the court for a chance to score. The second half started with a score of 59-0. Seeing that we would win by too wide of a margin, running down the clock was the only logical course of action left. Contrary to the articles, there were only a total of four 3-point baskets made; three in the first quarter, and only one in the third quarter. I continued to sub in bench players, play zone defense, and run the clock for the rest of the game. We played fair and honorably within the rules and in the presence of the parents, coaches, and athletic directors for both Covenant School and Dallas Academy.

BTW--just because a kid has dyslexia or ADD does not mean that they have any trouble playing sports.

Re: Coach fired for running up score 100- 0
the coach should be fired. you beat anyone 100-0 and its intentional. all this at a supposed christian private school i believe. making the score 100-0 just shows that your dumb enough to lose your job. with no shot clock you do not have to score. how many passes can you have in a row? how about not stopping the clock. this game became all about the coach and not about the game.
Re: Coach fired for running up score 100- 0
i was always taught that you can expect to get what you give. if you wouldn't mind being beaten by a score like that do it. frankly that kind of sportswomanship makes me sick. i would rather think of the college kids carrying the kid around the bases who blowed her knee out after hitting a hr because it was the right thing to do. that coach has taught his team what winners do even when they lose.

Southern beat Miller at home the other night 74-21. Is that running up the score or is one team really good and the other really bad
Re: Coach fired for running up score 100- 0
I know I am bias....but Miller IS very bad!!! Southern could have put up 100+ but I think coach did a noce job getting the young guys in early in the game.

So you are telling me if your child just got beat 100- 0 that you would shake the hand and congratulate the opposing coach? You don't have to tell the kids not to play hard. Tell them no press and play hard in a zone. No fast breaks but you can break down the others team defense for a lay-up. You can get jv players some varsity experience.
Glad the coach got fired he got what he deserved.

Re: Coach fired for running up score 100- 0
Did any of you even read the article or drrabbits post? Just what was the coach to do, tell his kids to not score and let the other team have the ball on every possession? He called off the press and went to a zone and the other team still couldn't score. He subbed in his bench players and still the other team couldn't score. The only thing he could have done was to have his players just stand outside the lane and pass the ball around for an entire half, but isn't that just as humiliating to the other team by saying, "we know you suck so we aren't even going to try to score any more points on you".
Too much PC in the world now. Heaven forbid we hurt little Johnnies or Suzies feelings by actually beating them. Why not just let every game end in a tie like T-Ball and everyone gets a trophy.

No its not t-ball and not everyone gets a trophy, but 100- 0 come on. The coach can say what he wants in the article. I read from a website, and the news coverage I saw he was pressing late in the third quarter, and fast breaking the whole game. Plus when the school issues a statment of apology, as a coach, you don't refute it. You are asking for it. If I were a coach I would at least publicly agree, or not reply with my super and board's statement, and discuss the issue behind closed doors. He got what he asked for.

Re: Coach fired for running up score 100- 0
the coach should have not been fired i mean runnig up the score isnt right but why is the team they played put in a division where they are gonna get their butts handed to them. everyone is worried about the other teams feelings and your their to compete not to make friends once u step in between the lines the other team is your enemy but after the game you are back to being friends. if they would run up the score on us and killed us by that much i wouldnt blame the other team i would blame our team for playing horrible and use that as a inspiration to get our acts together the next week.
Re: Coach fired for running up score 100- 0
I posted this in the girls' boops forum in a thread I'd started there about this game:
_________________________________________________________________
I'd say the coach was fired for his disagreement with school officials.
Sorry, but I believe THE SCHOOL OFFICIALS ARE WRONG!
COACH GRIMES' DUTY & LOYALTY WAS TO HIS OWN TEAM, AS IT SHOULDA BEEN! Any coach who tells his players not to score is not doing right by his players. To his credit, he had his players shooting 3s insteada working the ball in for easy layups as they did at first. Does anyone think the Covenant officials did its girls any good by firing a coach who encouraged them to do their best on the court?
Soundsta me those admins should be the ones fired, for disloaylty to their own school's student-athletes! I hope they hafta pay Coach Grimes a big chunks change to end his contract!
The "Dallas Academy" people chose to play their team against teams they cannot beat, and besides that, they didn't holler about the skunking. They knew what they were getting their team into, & have gracefully accepted the consequences, going winless the last 4 seasons.

There are things you can do in all sports to keep the score down.
Re: Coach fired for running up score 100- 0
If anyone watched ESPN, the school that lost only had 20 kids in the WHOLE school and 8 girls on the team. Once again....FIRE the AD for scheduling the game.

Re: Coach fired for running up score 100- 0
I guess Mt. Zion Christian Academy and some of the other Basketball Private School Powershouses should have their coaches fired. This is a sad case where the media jumped on this and created a firestrom. My sister told me about this game Saturday night and said "they were shooting 3 pointers the whole 4th qtr". Where did she get that from. The media and a parent who must have been watching a different game.
In reviewing the school sizes, the fired coaches view and the balance of the article, their is no way this coach should be fired. The "Christian" thing to do, is not to walk off the court or stop playing. The "Christian" thing to do, is to not make fun of the other team; not do any showboating (see many high school games across the country), and not be respectful after the game.
This team took its own beating a few years ago and nobody said anything. Besides, where is the opposing team coaches complaints? I have not seen them. Maybe they are there, but I doubt it. Obviously this team was not very good. To not be able to score against a 2-3 zone for over 3 qtrs tells you something.
Some of these private schools don't have many kids. If one team takes it serious (practice, work outs, etc) and the other is purely just for fun, then this is what happens.
Chillicothe's Middle School 7th grade girls got beat 80 something to 3 earlier this month. There was no media there for that and did not need to be. Yet, I don't see a call for the opposing teams head.
Just one thought? If the score had been 100-10 would there be an uproar and a firing? It is still a serious beating. Wellston got beat pretty bad a few years back, but I don't remember anyone calling for a coaches head. Talk to the AD's in this situation. Not the coach...
