Peebles Talent
I have noticed while reading and researching high school basketball in the area that while Peebles currently has a very talented team, led by sophomore Blake Justice and Andrew Seaman, who I believe is a junior, two other high school sophomores who spent some time in the Peebles system are also excellent high school basketball players and play big roles on there respective teams. Aric Carroll is a starting guard for the Hillsboro Indians and Treg Setty, at 6'6" plays inside and outside for the defending Kentucky High School state champion, Mason County Royals and has led the team in scoring the last three games.
While I haven't seen Carroll play in person I wouldn't think its out of the question for all four of these players to play at the collegiate level if they so desire. That would be quite a feat for a Southern Ohio town, to have four kids, all nearly the same age to play college basketball and two of them (Justice and Setty) likely at a Division I school.
I know its not fair to speculate on what "could have been" at Peebles but this group would have contended for state championships in my opinion.

Re: Peebles Talent
Good post about the Carroll boy. I saw on another Message Board that he had 24 points last week in a win against Greenfield McClain. He actually moved to Hillsboro after 6th grade primarily because they have a football team and of course Peebles doesn't. He started at QB this past season at Hillsboro as a sophomore. From what I understand baseball could be his best sport, though.
The Setty boy is originally from Peebles too. He had an older brother (6'7") who graduated last year and was a part of the Kentucky State Champion Mason County team and he went to Georgetown College, an NCAA Division II school on a full-ride. The younger Setty boy is having a very good year this year for Mason County as a sophomore. He is around 6'5" or so. Could you imagine these two boys at Peebles along with Justice, Seaman, and the rest of the team.

I don't know if all those kids ever played together in elementary but the thought of them all together at the high school level would be daunting for opponents.

Treg Setty is a sophmore for Mason Co. (KY). He is about 6' 8" now and is putting up some great numbers. In a loss to Lexington Catholic, Treg had 29 points and 17 rebounds. Several D-I schools, including Kentucky and Xavier, are already showing interest in him.
Re: Peebles Talent
These kids all did play together at the pee wee level and many thought back then that great things could happen with them. The kids all got along very well and still do. They would have made an outstanding team; we can only imagine what could have been. I doubt there would have been enough room in the gym for parents though. Very very competitive group.
Re: Peebles Talent
i believe georgetown ky. is naia but a very strong naia team.
all 4 going d1 would be a real stretch, but 4 quality players like that would sure help stop the north adams dominance and thoughts of state final fours from the usually weak southeast.
again we will never know because their families chose to go elsewhere for various reasons.

Re: Peebles Talent
It really would've been a fun group to watch come through Peebles. Georgetown College is a top-tier NAIA school that usually has some D1 talent, I believe they even won the Nat'l Championship recently.
Socfan,
Treg is not 6'8", that's Trevor, the older brother who's at Georgetown. Treg is prob. closer to 6'6".

Gee 2legit, good thing you created a username this week so you could make valuable contributions to this thread. What other blogs are you burning up with your insightfulness?
The fact remains these are boys that grew up at Peebles, whose families still reside in Peebles but chose to take their kids elsewhere for exposure which brings more opportunities. We know that kids in Peebles have to be outstanding to get a look, we don't have media coverage like most other D3 schools. Had the Setty boys stayed, there is no doubt Peebles "WOULDA" been very very hard to stop!!
Peebles has excellent talent right now and more in the pipeline!!! Its a great time for Peebles basketball.

Re: Peebles Talent
I'm not so sure they are getting any more "exposure" than they would've got at Peebles. Yes, Mason County won a Ky state tourney but I don't see where it did older Setty any favors? I have heard, but don't know for sure, that he is now at Maysville Community College?
Re: Peebles Talent
Playing at a school such as Mason Co. has many benefits, especially if you're hoping to play at the next level. Seeing their strength of schedule and getting opportunities to play all over the state, as well as Tenn. and Fla (Hawaii last year) would get you a lot more exposure than just playing in the SHL and traveling around southern Oh. Plus having a teammate like Darius Miller who was bringing in college coaches from all over the place would get you looks that you wouldn't normally get at another h.s. Oh yeah, playing in a fantastic gym in front of several thousand people wouldn't be so bad either
.
The oldest Setty boy is redshirting this year at Georgetown College.

Easy does it Rooster. Don't get too upset. Peebles has had some talent, there's no doubt about that, but there's not much point in wondering what could've been.

Re: Peebles Talent
If you really want to get looks its important to play AAU ball. Blake Justice does that with a pretty good team from northern Ohio around the Mansfield area.
rooster - I agree with you about the "pipeline" for Peebles basketball. I wasn't here during some of the glory days of years gone by, but I think with what's coming up it could be just like that.

Re: Peebles Talent
How long do you guys think John Lawhorn will coach at Peebles?
I think it's very important for continued success to have stability at the high school level a la Dave Young and North Adams. With the pipeline you speak of coming up that is a very attractive place for a coach to want to be.

Coach Lawhorn will be at Peebles for a few years I think. After that Josh Arey seems to be ready to step in.

To say that playing at Mason Co. doesn't get you any more exposure is silly. As mentioned Treg, as a sophomore is already drawing the attention of major D1 programs. What underclassman at Peebles or any other SHL school has this "exposure" or noterity next to their name. While Treg's looks started on the AAU scene he has seen these coaches appear at his HS games. Also Junkie you speak as you know the family and with that being said I would think you would be more careful about what you say in regards to either Setty boy or Carroll.
As for Trevor he had plenty of opportunity/exposure last year. Him being at MCC is his own fault. Like is being talked as a major feat in another thread, Trevor could've landed a D1 scholarship at a MAC school as well as other D1 schools (A10, SEC, Big 12, and the list goes on) but chose a better fit, Georgetown. Trevor is at MCC but as I understand it, under the advice of his Coach at Georgetown. But again nice low blow at a kid who made an academic mistake in his first college semester.
Re: Peebles Talent
Believe me, I have nothing negative to say about either one of these kids, it's usually never about the kids. As for a low blow, I have no idea what you are talking about. I had just heard he had transferred to a different school, don't know why, don't care, that's no one's business. My original comment was that it didn't seem that the "exposure" did anything more for him than if he were still in Peebles. He obviously didn't get any offers from big schools worth taking. My only point and opinion (opinions are like noses, everyone has one) is that if you're good, they're going to find you. Having a coach like John Lawhorn at Peebles can get you exposure. One of the reasons we haven't had a lot of kids go out of the SHL and make it big is that we haven't many players good enough. You had better be pretty darn good to make it big and while we've had a lot of very good ballplayers in this area, they haven't been good enough to make it big. Again, just my opinions but I'm not taking anything away from these kids. Like I said, its usually not about the kids.
Re: Peebles Talent
Junkie, It seems you always get caught, thread after thread, defending your comments. And it always turns out someone "misunderstood" what you are saying!?! Why is that? If you say it then say it. Realize that this is written word not spoken, so tones and emotions get applied by the reader not by the author. Therefore, as an active poster you should try spending a little more time revising and editing your comments before your final post. As far as your comment about the older Setty boy I think everyone else knew what you meant when saying that being at a larger high school "apparently" didn't do anything for him because he ended up at a "community college." Again nice back peddle attempt but this previous comment had everything to do with the kid.
Re: Peebles Talent
So yco8, after your 3 posts, now you are the forum police? Give me a break. Obviously you are very defensive about this, so maybe you should edit your own posts so that won't show through. I dont really care what you think but let me rephrase and you can try to read slowly: IN MY OPINION if he had had offers from big schools as you said, I would think he would've went to one instead of Georgetown College, maybe the offers just weren't there.
That is taking nothing away from the career he had at Mason Co and the opportunity to play on a state championship team. That's awesome but maybe that's as far as the "exposure" went.

Re: Peebles Talent
With the cost of a college education I wouldn't care where my child went if he could get his/her tuition paid for (and enjoy the game for a few more years too!!! Wow, that would be great!).
Unbelievable the posts that are made on here. Let the kids be kids and enjoy this time in their lives and maybe even remain friends with the people that they went to school with throughout their lives.
