IV 172 to 242 122
V 120 to 171 116
VI 119 and less 122
Total Schools 717

So, based on the above FACTS, there is a 4:1 ratio of Public to Private schools in the state of Ohio (from K-12). There are 717 football playing schools in Ohio and 802 Public High Schools in Ohio. Obviously, there are many schools that do not field football teams, both public and private. At any rate, based on the above numbers, it is pretty obvious to me that things can easily be stacked in a private school's favor. To be fair, simply because it CAN happen and DOES happen at SOME schools, DOES NOT mean that it happens everywhere.

Exactly what I thought, so to anyone thinking that public schools "just need to do a better job" look at the above numbers. There is no way to compete with a private school that builds a team versus a public school (esp. in D6 & 5 ) that may get in 1 or 2 transfers. It's simply not possible.

if there are like 4237 public schools, and barely over a thousand, 1047 private schools. then how can it be basically dead even on football state championships. and please don't tell me it's because of higher educational classrooms, it's simply due to putting who you want in these private schools from year to year. i'm a very dear friend of an ex ohio state coach. and let's just say i know better.

BTW, back to discussing Ursuline --

currently Ursuline has two feeder middle schools in Mahoning County. Both fielded top notch programs again this year. Northside Catholic has speed you wouldn't believe. St. Pats had size that H.S. wish they had. Both will keep Ursuline as a solid power for years to come and I haven't even counted any vouchers kids from Ytown coming in. UHS will be able to continue to play D-I St. Eds or St. X or Iggy. D-V will be ugly for years to come.

Unfortunately for every Ursuline out there, there is a Portsmouth Notre Dame. Theres the problem, a handful of schools benefit from the rules when a handful dont. Ursuline is like the perfect storm of high school football. Its in a great football tradition area, crappy public schools with little to no community support, able to draw from a large urban area and able to manipulate who can enter. It would be like a rich Portsmouth Notre Dame benefactor donated millions of dollars to them. In it this person said it can only be used for scholarships and football. Imagine the talent they could attract while staying D VI!

Mooney went from D IV two years ago to D III, you would think the terrible plight of the public schools and the voucher system would mean that parents would be beating down those two's doors to get their kids in there. Why arent they growing in numbers?

Bait has a friend who is an ex OSU coach so that makes him an authority on this matter :) :) How many of these 31 championships were won by the same 6 or 7 schools? Do I believe something is fishy in Y-town yes, do I think it is as easy for a private school to win as some here say- hell no. There is a bunch of private schools that struggle every year just like public schools.

Why is it that some of you have no problem with schools like Coldwater, Maria Stein, Versailles, Colerain, Glenville, Steubenville, Avon, Kenton winning year in and year out? People are seriously naive if you think public schools don't recruit or draw kids based on previous success or tradition. I know that Baits alma mater has as a ton of kids left St.Joe to play at Ironton and not one of them were recruited, they simply wanted to play for a champion and a great coach but I guess Bait has forgot that :122249(Bait is my buddy but we seriously disagree on this)

yes we are buddies and nothing will ever change this dutch.there is a vast difference between st. joes program ceasing to play, and getting a few kids a year to play ball from a st. joe program , that is no longer in existence. or an occasional open enrollment student that wants a chance at a scholarship. than having 100,000 people to pick from right there in a city.and outlying areas. since we were originally discussing ursiline. let's continue. in my opinion, there are very few private schools that can even beat them, much less public schools say d3 and down, heck maybe d2.seriously have you seen their schedule, and still very nearlt got in.

Here is an update -- I'd look for more Youngstown kids to stay in the public schools with the new arrangement. While UHS may get some players on vouchers, I see the numbers dropping. Youngstown East is a sparking brand newly built school. Chaney exists , but only for STEM education ( science, tech, math, etc) as all students at both schools will find only athletic teams at East for both schools. As East builds and wins, it will keep many players home. They are in the process of providing a new home for East to play in ( no current home field for East, played all their games on the road this year) with a "rug" probable. They become D-I with the athletic consolidation and they are seeking out only the big name programs to play. That will be attractive to inner city athletes with college ability to showcase against the Massillons, McKinleys, etc while staying with their school friends . Meanwhile, parochial elementaries are still being closed with falling enrollments and expensive tuition. But as long as you only need 11 on the field , Ursuline ( and Mooney) will be forces to deal with.

Bait, We agree on something not right at YUHS. Lets not assume that all private schools cheat because YUHS might. As far as our alma maters ,IHS got several players long before we dropped football but I know nothing was illegal. I just want you and others to consider that some of these schools recieve players that simply want to be part of tradition and transfer on their own and yes there are public schools that recruit( see Taft and NCHill )

Probably replace him with Jim Tressel. I here he's pretty familiar with recruiting the Youngstown area.
