Talent wins. You have to have talent. Irontons JV had as much talent at times in the 80s and 90s as the varsity did last year.

Great coaching gets talent to the next level.

Gotta go with a great coach. A great coach can take average and make it good take good and make great and take bad and make average. Theres a lot of examples of talented teams getting beat because they had a good or below average coach. You can have all the talent in the world, but if the coach doesnt put you in the position to use that talent then that talent isnt worth a plug nickel.

Someone asked if Lutz would have done the same thing at Green, I say look what he did at Ironton St. Joe. In 1969 ISJ were predicted to finish next to last in the OVC and what happened ? OVC CHAMPS!!!

Dutch I can remember going to the first practice that Lutz had at St Joe after Sheridan left. We were there with a few of the old alums and thought there was no way he would win even one game. True I think St Joe lost all the OOC games but won all of the OVC games. He seemed to always find a way. Good coach? Record speaks for itself. No one better in this State, yet.

true enough ray.

we need to get over the fact that the record setting illustrious career is over. the legend will live forever there.
we need to get on board with coach vass, follow him just as much. realize we went through a complete meltdown during the changeover, and were trying to many different ways to play the game. you can't reinvent the wheel. we have had an enourmously tough schedule the last 4/5 years. lower turnout number wise, severly serious injuries. and honestly we must have lacked in the weightroom as well as the mindset. now there are no excuses 50 boys out, a lot coming back, very challenging schedule, i'll put my money on the fighting tigers coming back into prominence. the main thing we lacked from a coaching perspective the last 2 years was too many variations in the system. and the main thing the players lacked was desire/attitude. the entire ironton fighting tiger organization needs to get that attitude back any time they are on the field, and play good clean, hardnosed football again.RESPECT EVERYONE, FEAR NO ONE.

Ray, You are right about those OOC games in 69 but it should be noted those were against Wayne, Meigs and Wheelersburg. At ISJ Lutz did it the same way he did it at IHS. His teams were physical, fundamentally sound and in shape like no other

growing pains-----------------small turnout----------not disciplined in fundamemtals--------too many variations to approach.

I look for the fighting tigers to rebound and play hard nosed slobber knockin football this year.

Talent and depth with an average Coach wins Championships!!! Great Coach will win a game against a poor coach with even or slightly better talent but that's where it ends. I'll take an average Coach with talent over a great Coach with average or no talent any day...The Coolaide drinkers put these Coaches up on a pedestal like their a god.. It's to the point it gets sickening reading and listening to the media and fans build these Coaches up. Shifting to College Coaches like Nick Saban, Urban Meyers, Les Miles and many more...Why are they considered Great Coaches? Why are they ranked so high every year? Why so many wins? I'll tell u why...The media cream their jeans over the mere presence of them , and build them up like their the 2nd coming of Christ. HS kids see and hear the Media pumping up these Coaches on ESPN, the internet and Newspapers...Hence these Coaches receive the best talent in the Country. It has very little to do with great Coaching! It's the recruiting and the Media provides 90 percent of that....How many times have you seen these so called legends retire or quit and then come back to coach a lesser name college or even HS and do terrible? I could name several who flopped this way and it was because they had no talent. I know Ironton fans don't want to hear what I'm about to say but the simple fact is when Ironton was a dominating Football Power they had great talent... They had more kids to pick from and not just from Ironton if u can read between the lines...

agree with alot you say there except few things!!

the average coach (attempts 3rd and long runs) the great coach is (prepared for that play)the great coach also knows this is PASSING situation

the average coach after a turnover deep in opponents territory (attempts multiple plays) the great coach (sticks it in endzone on PLAY 1 or PLAY 2)

Good coach, bad coach, great coach take your pick runs same play, D gets penetration and tackles an avg player for a loss, a great player will make defender miss, turn on the jetts and get you 6.

The best example I can give of a great coach making a difference was Lutz in 99.They were I believe an 8 seed in the playoffs.Their record I think was 6 and 3.They made itto the last game only to lose in the waning seconds. They had no business getting that far.

I have to agree with you 100%. That is more or less what happened to Ironton. They won in the early years, they lifted weights back then. Then every good player started transferring to Ironton. It was a snowball effect. Every year Ironton had a couple standouts that made a huge difference and would to any team.

...high school football. Have to enjoy it.

I think Ironton better come ready to play. They have the potential to win this one.
