Re: 2008 Ironton Junior High Schedule & Results
I was at that game and first off I have to say congratulations to the Tigers. Man, are those boys big.LOL. Heck, the FB, number 45, was bigger then any of the Burg's d-linemen. Burg was able to move the ball, especially through the air. No. 5 for the Burg (Arthurs) throws a nice ball and they also have some strong runners. No. 50 for the Burg, Moore had a heck of a game from the center position. Did a nice job of snapping the ball and then making a block. Nice job Pirates.
As for the flags, I never saw any that was real blatantly bad. The helping the runner flags were IMO, legit. You, as the offense are not allowed to push the runner forward in trying to help him advance the ball. Tigers did it twice and both times it was called. The one block in the back was a good call. It was on the play where No. 10 reversed his field and was running the other way. The Burg defender had stopped to change his direction and the Tiger lineman blocked him right square in the back.
Overall I think the refs did a good job. Sure, there was some they missed, but overall they did a good job.
Good luck Pirates then rest of the season. Know that one game doesn't make a season. Keep your heads up and play hard the rest of the year.

I also asked a question, how many of the flags were called by the Ironton Ref ? Correct me if Im wrong, but I am thinking that you think the Ironton refs unfairly called penalities on the Ironton team?? Why would they want to do that? As fair as the signal for the aiding the runner call, there are classes throughout the tristate usually mid summer if your interested in learning.

You obviously have more than a casual interest in this . The Ironton official and the head of the crew who is an Ironton guy should not have let the game and the other 2 officials get that out of hand. Out of hand? Well, an Ironton mother was kicked out of the game for arguing from the "stands" without using profanity? A Wheelersburg player #63 caught a pass for a big gain without a flag and the coach was screaming to the officials that he was inelligible. All the Ironton fans heard him, so I don't know how the officials didn't. You can make all the smartypants comments you want about the aiding the runner calls, but how often is that ever called? Then on 2 consecutive plays it gets called? Give me a break!
As far as their motivation for all this... I don't know whether the Ironton officials were scared to say something to their obviously partial colleagues or they are mad because they do not get alot of Ironton home games, but they sure had an issue that prevented them from seeing what was going on around them. Once again, THE KIDS ARE THE ONES THAT ARE GETTING HURT IN THIS and that is why it makes me so mad!

I was not at the game but 1 thing I know is that if you do not know the signal for a call there is no way you could know how the rule reads or have an understanding of the rule and how and when it should be called. As a southern ohio sport fan I want to remind readers to not judge all Tiger fans by Go Tigers comments, I know several Tiger fans that indeed do have class even if Go tigers does not. I hope Go Tigers does not teach young men to act like this , further repeating the unsportmanlike cycle. Congrats to both teams for a hard fought game.
Re: 2008 Ironton Junior High Schedule & Results
go tigers,
That Ironton official has a 10 game varsity schedule this year. It includes mostly local schools including an Ironton home game. That crew even helped out Ironton during their scrimmage this year for free when the other crew cancelled. Yes, alot of schools pay the refs for those friday night scrimmages, but they chose to do the Ironton one.
Trust me, he has nothing against Ironton. He ref's football because he enjoys the game. He drove down and back yesterday, spent a couple hours there and listened to fans for 30.00. Wow, thats alot of money isnt it
But like I said, he loves the game and in his 10 + years of officiating, i can promise you he has never been out to cheat a team. Yes Im sure he has missed some calls before, after all he is human. But to say that he allowed the game to get out of hand by calling to much because he is against Ironton is upsetting. You are entitled to your opinion, but to get on here and tell ppl to "PM" you and youll let them know who the officials were, is pathetic.

I understand that refs are underpaid and take alot of undeserved abuse, so we will just have to disagree on whether this is deserved or not! Also, I will not tell people via PM and respect your wishes.

Re: 2008 Ironton Junior High Schedule & Results
I watched the Verity/Ironton 8th grade game this past Thursday. As impressed as I am with Ironton's team, I have to wonder what the ages of these boys are. I have a very hard time believing that the boys that took the field this week at Putnam Stadium were all legitimate 8th graders or appropriate 8th grade age. This team did not even resemble last year's team. Are there any repeat key players from last year except Dion Brown?
In addition to looking suspiciously older than our boys, the Ironton team played shamefully dirty football. There were countless late hits and cheap shots some that were caught by officials and many more that weren't. This not only reflects badly on the players, but on the coach who allows this behavior and the program as a whole.
If the Ironton representatives have nothing to hide they can post their roster with player # and birthdates.
There is no doubt that Ironton has had a long history of successful football. It's a shame that incidents like this cast a shadow on the legitimacy of a win. In any case, the Verity Patriots battled back in one of the most gutsy performances I've ever seen. I can't think of another team down 26-0 in the last 4 minutes of the game that could pull out 3 touchdowns in a row with two of them being forced turnovers. Our boys are true warriors in every sense of the word and the Ironton players and coaches should adopt some of their class the next time they step on the field.

I don't think anything casts a shadow of doubt on a win just because you're upset your team lost. That just sounds like sour grapes.
I don't think posting birthdates would be appropriate as these children are minors but I do know a way you can find out if they are of legal age. Follow the names until those kids play high school football as seniors. If they are eligible then, they are of appropriate playing age right now.
I don't know the ages for all those kids but I'd go out on a limb and say they will all be legal as seniors in high school. That is an exceptional group of players as far as talent and size.

In response to Blindwhiteheat's comments:
"I don't think anything casts a shadow of doubt on a win just because you're upset your team lost. That just sounds like sour grapes."
I'm not sour grapes that the Patriots lost. In fact, as a parent, I couldn't be more proud of the way our boys battled back in the last 3 minutes of the game. As I stated in my original post, I'm very impressed with the talent and ability of the Ironton 8th grade. So impressed, in fact, that I'm echoing lots of other parents' concerns that the boys on that team look to be older than our boys. If that is not the case, then my apologies for giving voice to my suspicions.
I'll not apologize however for addressing the cheap shots and late hits. This game should always be about the kids and a boy's safety shouldn't be at risk when it comes to dirty tactics. I realize football is a rough game but, taking blatant late hits and cheap shots after a play shouldn't be a standard part of football.
In closing, congratulations to both of the teams-one for winning and to the other for playing with heart and never giving up.

Really? Then why did you post? Unless it was an attempt to drag Ironton's 8th grade team through the mud with unfounded and baseless accusations about their age tainted by a bit of sour grape wine or is that whine?
