That's the thing they don't do ANY push-ups , grass drills ,sit ups....none! Thats my problem they aren't doing ANYTHING to get the kids in football shape. I am going over to chat with the coaches today. I'm not going in a huff or in confrontational mode just going to ask some questions and offer to help.

I'll have to disagree with your assesment on weight training. Teaching them proper form with lighter weight and close supervision will only help them when they get older and start real weight training. Well......if the H.S. actually had a weight program that is. This isn't so much for my kid as the rest of the team. I've had my kid lifting light weights and using proper form 2 nites a week since 6th grade. I'm not so sure he's going to suffer any "backlash" he pancakes the guy across from him almost every play and he has a great work ethic. I actually don't think I'll have to try and oust the H.S. coach.......the guy has won 3 games in 3 years.

I don't see a problem then. Isn't academics what school is about? Wouldn't you rather your son be getting a quality education than playing on a good football team? Being on a good high school football team or even being a high school football star will not take you as far in life as a good education will.

This goes without saying, but isn't this the football forum? Is there something wrong with wanting both for your child? Believe me, I dismissed this stuff for a while, I thought the kid was just not getting along with the coach or something. That was before I went and saw for myself.

I've seen it when the coach was right and the parents were wrong; he DID know what he was doing; and I've seen it where the parents were right and the coach was wrong and he DIDN'T know what he was doing. The only advice I will give is this, Don't do this during your son's season. Encourage him to do whatever the coach says, play for his teamates, but most importantly have fun. That, sir, is what Jr. High sports should be all about. If you have issues, address them through the proper channels after the season is over. You do this now and they stand no chance this season whatsoever. If you truly do care about those kids and their season, you can start your season when theirs is over.

I'm wondering if in the meantime, while you're getting your certification, if you can have a private meeting with the coach to discuss your philosophy with him. Maybe he is, like you say, a football moron. Maybe he would be open to ideas and maybe he'd appreciate your input. The reason I suggest this approach is because 90% of my line of work involves negotiations of some type or another, and I have been amazed over the course of my 10 year career how easily some people are willing to change their positions. Anyway, may be worth a shot.

A meeting might be a good idea as long as you two are not alone. You should also try to keep it as low-key as possible because if not people will say you are trying to be a distraction. Talk to him and see what happens, if that doesn't work. Go cause a scene and yell at him after a game like an idiot...........j/k.

Seriously, if a meeting doesn't work, call the administration.

Move to Nebraska. They do not have any teaching requirements for coaches at most of the schools in Omaha or Lincoln.

Are you a teacher at the school? What are your qualifications for being the head varsity coach besides coaching your kid in pee wee football?

Move him to Unioto..... They may make you the next HC.

I would speak to the board about the sitaution and maybe have some former parents praise your effort and do some teaching to the kids in your own time. If it gets worse I would also move him to a dif team.Good luck, I may be in that sit in a couple of years!

What certification are you going to get? I don't understand what you are talking about. You said that you did not want to teach, so what are you getting certified in?

In this state you need to be cretified by the WIAA to be head coach at the H.S. level. Pretty much a 2 day seminar and subsequent 15 hours of classes every 3 years.....pretty much a money racket. You do not have to be a teacher in the dist to coach.

Since you are asking for advice: Don't be head coach of your son's team at this level. But you could see if they need another assistant coach/volunteer.
