SOUTH POINT — The final quarter between Chesapeake High School and South Point featured offensive runs by both teams but when the Panthers needed one more spurt they couldn’t deliver.

South Point held on to defeat arch rival Chesapeake 58-54 in Ohio Valley Conference boys basketball action.

The opening three minutes of the fourth quarter saw the Pointers go on an 11-4 run increasing their lead to 50-40, matching their highest lead of the night.

Kyle Winkler played a big role in the South Point run, scoring eight of the 11 points.

However, the Panthers didn’t go away quietly. Led by Kyle Webb and Nathan Copley, Chesapeake answered South Point going on a 9-1 run cutting the deficit to 51-49.

After two South Point buckets, the Pointers seemed to have the game in hand, but with just over a minute remaining a lapse in judgement — a technical foul in particular — proved costly.
Because of Chesapeake being in the double bonus, Kyle Web was afforded four free throws, connecting on two.

After two Chase Kratzenberg free throws, Chesapeake’s Webb converted a 3-point play after a steal under the basket from Peter Hintz.

After a South Point miss, Hintz missed a 3-point attempt with 11 seconds remaining. Matt Button got the long rebound and hit one of two free throws to seal the Pointers victory.

“We have worked hard and lost some close games,” said South Point head coach Gary Norris. “We were due to win one.”

Chesapeake’s Webb had a big night, scoring a game-high 35 points. The senior guard hit four out of his first five 3-pointers, scoring 21 of his 35 points in the first half. He was also 12 for 15 from the foul line.

South Point’s Ethan Prater made a huge contribution inside the paint. The junior forward had 13 points and six rebounds, using good post moves to score a few buckets.

“It’s been a huge difference between this and last year with Ethan,” coach Norris said. “He has worked really hard since last March and has played even better recently. He’s more mobile and stabilizes our offensive game.”

South Point (10-6, 3-4 OVC) was led by Kratzenberg with 17 points. Winkler finished with 11.
Nathan Copley had a solid night for Chesapeake (13-4,6-2 OVC), finishing with 10 points and four rebounds. The Panthers host Portsmouth Tuesday night.

CHESAPEAKE 14 14 8 18 — 54: Webb 35, Copley 10, Hintz 4, Saunders 3, Angle 2.
SOUTH POINT 20 12 7 19 — 58: Kratzenberg 17, Prater 13, Winkler 11, Lynd 6, C. Taylor 6, G. Taylor 2, Fletcher 2 Button 1.

According to the OHSAA Southeastern District website, which has the tourny pairings, South Point was 7-7 at the draw. How could they be 10-6 now?

the 7-7 record at the drawings is right ... not sure where the 10-6 came from ... i believe sp is now 10-7 after beating rv today
