GLOUSTER — How close was the grudge-match Friday night between the Buckeyes and the Tomcats at muggy Glouster Memorial Stadium?
It all came down to shoelaces, and an untimely cramp.
Sophomore quarterback Nathan Dean — making his first varsity start — engineered a game-tying, 95-yard touchdown drive late in the fourth quarter, then scored the go-ahead point by booting the extra point as visiting Nelsonville-York clipped host Trimble 7-6.
“That’s about the second or third day he’s kicked actually,†said the Buckeyes’ Isaiah Andrews, who held the ball for Dean’s kick. “Shoelaces. You got to kick it with the shoelaces. That’s all we tell him. I don’t know what it is, but he gets it through.â€
Dean did more than kick. He connected twice with lanky N-Y tight end Conner Bunting during the game-winning drive, which started on the Buckeyes’ five-yard line with 5:32 remaining. The 25-yard, and nine-yard gains set up the Bucks inside the Trimble 20. Three plays later, tailback Derek Arnold spun off a pile at the line of scrimmage and lunged three-yards for the game-tying touchdown.
N-Y head coach Dave Boston wasn’t surprised when Dean said he’d boot the PAT to give his team the lead.
“He’s one of those kids who has played the sport his whole life and has a lot of confidence. He believes in himself and that’s a big part of it,†Boston said. “He looked at me and said ‘Coach, that’s a gimme. I’m going to hit that kick.’ I said ‘Good boy.’â€
Trimble (0-1) got the ball back inside their own 30 with a minute to go, and nearly stunned the capacity crowd with a game-breaker. Facing third-and-long with 50 seconds left, quarterback Charles Kish launched a deep pass down the middle of the field to a streaking Tyler Dyla.
Dyla had a step on his defender, and the pass appeared about to hit him in stride. But Andrews timed his leap well and knocked the pass away at the last possible second. The ‘Cats last gasp on fourth down also fell incomplete.
“This is definitely a game of inches,†said Trimble head coach Phil Faires. “(The Buckeyes) were playing a lot of guys both like we were, and I’m sure they were as tired as we were.
“They just made the big plays when they had to.â€
Dyla and Arnold, both all-state running backs last season, didn’t disappoint. Both turned in breath-taking runs, both broke 100 yards, and both earned every inch as the opposing defenses flew to the football and levied big hits.
Dyla finished with 104 yards on 22 carries, and played nearly the whole game at free safety as well — and snagged one of Trimble’s three interceptions. Arnold, meanwhile, racked up 145 yards on 23 carries and added a reception for 24 more while playing as an outside linebacker.
Arnold also came up big late. Facing a third-and-one from their own 14, the Buckeyes handed the ball to Arnold. The senior exploded through the middle and reeled off a 42-yard gain. Arnold had 61 yards during the Buckeyes’ 95-yard drive.
“It just shows how good he is,†Faires said. “We were able to pin him in and keep him controlled for 80 percent of the night, and then he gets going on a couple.â€
The Tomcats, following a weak showing in preseason scrimmages, revamped its defense for the opener.
It worked.
With inside linebacker Johnny Stobart leading the charge from the middle of a 3-5 front, the ‘Cats hammered on Arnold, frustrated the Buckeyes most of the game, and came within one possession of securing the win.
Nelsonville-York (1-0) had four turnovers, including interceptions by Dyla, Richard Drake and Kish. Trimble even turned in an impressive goal-line stand in the first half when the Buckeyes had first-and-goal on the six-yard line, but ended up with no points after Stobart stuffed Andrews on fourth down.
“Take your hat off to Trimble’s kids. They played a whale of a game,†Boston said. “They played hard. They played physical. Both teams battled it out defensively.â€
After a scoreless first half, the Tomcats broke through in the third quarter. Trimble ground out an 11-play, 70-yard drive, with Nick Eing providing the capper via a 3-yard touchdown dive with 3:19 left in the quarter.
The ‘Cats led 6-0, but Eing was sidelined after the play with leg cramps. Eing is also Trimble’s kicker, which left backup Sonny Cain to try the PAT kick. The attempt was short and to the left.
Still, the ‘Cats had other chances to put the game away. Arnold fumbled away the ensuing kickoff, but Trimble’s drive was shut down at the N-Y 12-yard line.
The Buckeyes’ next drive ended with an interception, but Trimble went three-and-out. Nelsonville-York’s next series ended on its own 41 after a failed try on a fourth-and-one conversion. But the ‘Cats again went three and out.
“I’m still encouraged,†Faires said. “If you had told me beforehand it was going to be a one-score game, I would have been tickled.â€
Dean finished 7-of-14, with three interceptions, for 119 yards in his varsity debut. Also making his first varsity start, Trimble junior Charles Kish finished 2-of-9 with one interception for 48 yards.
Richard Drake had both Trimble receptions for 48 yards. Meanwhile Bunting racked up five catches for 82 yards for the Buckeyes.
“Derek’s Derek, he’s going to break some, but Trimble forced us to throw the football,†Boston said. “But Conner had a great game for us and came up with some big plays.â€
The win was the first for the Buckeyes at Glouster since 2003, and gave N-Y back-to-back wins in the series.
The game was also a classic in every sense of the word. It certainly made an impact on the players who competed Friday night.
“It’s a different world out there in this game,†Andrews said. “It’s something else.â€
The Buckeyes will host Piketon next week in non-league action while Trimble travels to county rival Alexander.
