Re: WEEK 9 ~ Marietta AT PORTSMOUTH
Dont really understand your post Nick Nevada.....the Trojans in no way have quit...they practice hard every week, they go to the games every Friday, and in those games they go out and play hard....just because they dont win, doesn't mean they have quit. I will be the first to admit we have our problems this year....but IN NO WAY HAVE THEY QUIT....Do you think that they enjoy the fact that they a 1-7, I can assure you that THEY DONT. They continue to work hard week in and week out.

Start a different thread to talk about that. Keep this one about the Marietta Portsmouth game.

But, back to the East vs. Portsmouth thing! The only people who ever say; East should play Portsmouth or their schedule, is Portsmouth! We play in our level of playing field and above in a few higher divisions!
Sure looks to me like in the earlier post you said Portsmouth is the worst team in the city.Axe N Shield wrote: Portsmouth is the "worst" team in the city! ND, Sciotoville, Portsmouth West all have better records than them! Enough on that!
If they are the worst and East and PHS are both in the city sure looks like you are saying that East could beat PHS.Axe N Shield wrote:I know that East or Sciotoville took alot of your enrollment down when they seperated from Portsmouth; but those 400 and some kids would never go to Portsmouth and play for the Trojans! I think we all know that! By their choice!
I have no clue what you are talking about. East never took 400 kids away form PHS. I assume you are referring to the kids all ready at East that would have never been considered part of PHS so they have no relevance in this debate. The reason enrollment is down at PHS is because Portsmouth is not as big as it was 10 years ago, nor was it as big then as it was 20 years ago and so on. PHS is not the only school to see a loss of enrollment. West as late as 2006 was a division 4 school, Minford and Burg with also both d4 in 2000.You may want to take into consideration the fact the PHS has to deal with things other local districts do not like the # of students from different racial and ethnic backgrounds, that the test are not always fairly written for, and the number of special needs kids that are in the district. With that being said anyone that attended PHS will tell you there are plenty of opportunities to get a great education there, for someone who wants one.Axe N Shield wrote:As far as your enrollment goes! All I can say is maybe bring the "Academic Grade Card" up and hit more indicators than "attendance" and "graduation" and you might increase your enrollment numbers!Axe N Shield wrote:It could be a simple case of; you bit off more than you can chew! Or, you simply can't compete year-in and out with these schools and now it leaves a bad taste in your mouths! I think maybe this is the case!
You are probably right the Trojans may have a hard time competing year in and year out but the SEOAL at least gives us a chance to compete. Since some SOC will not. It is just a shame that schools that would have no dealings with the Trojans if they were admitted into the league still vote against them due to some unprovoked hatred that they have. Why adults would want to punish kids in this manor is unknown to me.
Here is an example of what I’m talking about.Axe N Shield wrote:If it was up to me! I would never let Portsmouth in the SOC II for any reason! Not just because they might win a couple of championships; just because they think they are always the best and can do as they please! We should probably change the name of the two conferences to; Someone Other Than Portsmouth SOTP! Just my feelings! Nothing against the kids! Just how it is
I was referring to the worst record in the city; as in win/loss records; I never said they could beat Portsmouth! Again, Portsmouth fans can't stand the fact that someone else other than Portsmouth is doing better.
Portsmouth did lose alot of kids when East seperated themselves from Portsmouth! In funding from the state that is around $2 million! So, yeah! They were counted into their enrollment! Portsmouth also has over 1,000 kids in their district that by choice go else where to receive their education! 1,000 students! That's $6 million! You are right about one thing though... people don't want to live in the city of Portsmouth! I can't blame them! That's why I live in Sciotoville... at least we are seperated from the crazyness and inadequate learning center there!
As far as, racial, ethnic and special needs students! PHS receives Title funds for all of these categories! And, as far as test go... if this is your reason for failure then, everyone else takes the same kinds of test! But, they don't use them as a crutch to lean on or as an excuse for failure! Maybe, they could stop watching cartoons on the big new t.v.'s and start teaching in the lower grades!
As far as, punishing kids! I have nothing against the kids! That's maybe what the parents of the kids should ask of Portsmouth City School in giving them a sub-standard education! The proofs in the pudding! Check the state grade cards!

You may have meant to say that PHS has the worst record, but what you said was they were the worst team in the city which would imply that the other teams in the city could beat them. Maybe you misspoke???

Students that actually attended PHS were not lost, when East split from the Portsmouth City School district. The kids that you are referring to are the students that went to East before the PCSD decided that the district only needed one high school. At that time the money that in previous years would have gone to East was not given to the PCSD, instead the state gave it to East. Money lost? Kind of, but not really since that money was always for the East kids.
I'm not sure about your 1000 student figure, but there are some students that choose to attend other districts. Portsmouth also has transfers form others as well. I have no clue on what the ratio of lost to gained students would be.
I also never said that people do not want to live in Portsmouth, however many do prefer to live in Lucasville, Burg, or other areas. What I was referring to is the loss on population of the city due the economy of Portsmouth and all of Southern Ohio.

You are right everyone else must take the test as well, however you don't think standardized test are written with an unintentional bias? It would be nice if they were not but it is nearly impossible to do that. Also PHS has 14% of its students that are some race other then white and 22% of their students have disabilities. Where East has 3% that are not white and 16% disabilities. Burg, the best academic school in the county has 99% white and 9% disabilities. Isn’t it funny how it works out that way? There have been many studies done that show different factors such as race, socioeconomics and others affect these test, maybe you should consider some of these issues before you blast Portsmouth. With that being said there is room for improvement at Portsmouth, and they are heading in the right direction.

I have made it clear that there are other issues at play when discussing the quality of an education then what a standardized test tells you. I have talked to many educators that say these test are horrible for student because they are force to teach to the test to make sure student pass. This forces them to miss or skip past other important information that is not on the test. Any student at PHS that wants a quality education receives one. This is obvious by the number of scholarships that are given each year to the seniors.
Again I apologize for all this on this thread and promise this will be my last off topic post. Maybe I should move this discussion over to the East thread? What is someone that hates PHS so much doing on here anyway?

Re: WEEK 9 ~ Marietta AT PORTSMOUTH
Sorry again everyone, now we can talk about the game.
This is a game that I think will be a very close defensive battle. If either O gets going I will be surprised. The Tigers do scare me because of the schedule that they have played, but I think we can hang in there with them and hopefully one of these close ones will finally go our way. If the Trojans O can just give the D some time to rest I think that PHS will win.
Trojans 13
Tigers 7

Re: WEEK 9 ~ Marietta AT PORTSMOUTH
I drove by our beloved alma mater PHS the other day and saw a banner hanging on an outside wall that said.......Portsmouth City Schools rated "EFFECTIVE" which is quite an improvement from past years........evidently the overall academic rating of the school has taken quite an upturn......good to see........
As far as the game, I can't remember the last time Marietta came to Portsmouth for a football game, or vice versa for that matter. I know we haven't played the Tigers for a long time on the gridiron.......but the 2 schools met several times in the 60's and 70's in the regular season and the tourney in basketball........until PHS became a AA school in 1978...........

The offense starts clicking, and the defense starts sticking, I like the Trojans in this one.

I wish the Trojans good luck friday night. Get fired up, and come out fighting.
Also, I will say one thing about the Portsmouth City Schools, and this isn't aimed at anyone in particular. Anyone can get a good education at the Portsmouth City Schools, if they want it. If a child doesn't want to learn..no school can get them to.

Having seen both in action. Marietta will/can win by 24 or more. It seems Portsmouth does not always take advantage of its athletes and play to their strengths. Marietta can at times have dropsy with its receivers.

No, all I'm saying is that this we be a close, defensive ballgame. My score might not be right but I think it will be a one score ballgame.
Also anyone that has seen PHS play will tell you that if the D wasn't always fighting such horrible field position given up by the special teams and O, there stats would look much better then they do. The Trojans have a strong D, I'm interested to see how they do against the Tigers passing attack.
