Derek has a lot of work to do, a lot of camps and combines to attend, and a lot of higher level coaches to make believers. Does he care what the posters on SEOPS or the "other" boards think? No...if he is a true competitor, which anyone who knows him knows he is, he will do everything in his power to achieve his goals....hard work, dedication, and passion.
Can one player make a football team win games? No, it cannot, but can leadership, dedication and passion make a team better? It certainly can, especially if those things can be instilled in all the players, not just one.
Derek will make his mark...He is one he** of an athlete and no one can ever take that away from him...what he chooses to do with that is in his hands....
will he play DI footbal...that is yet to be seen. And if he does not....is that the worst thing that could happen...not a chance.... Whatever happens with Derek's football career is nothing compared to what his future holds as a person....Good luck Derek and Waverly Tigers.

I've never seen the likes of some of these silly comments. I don't care if he goes 0-10 next year and gets sacked 50 times. College coaches are not buffoons like some people on here. They actually COACH football for a LIVING. NOTHING ELSE. Thats all they do, every day of their life---coach, recruit, coach and recruit some more. They watch film and they know what they need to look for. They also have what is called a QB coach. He will usually be referred to so he may watch the prospective student athlete and the HC will throw a little bit of his assessment skills and together they will figure out if and where they can use him. They'll look at the intangibles, as some have said, and they'll look at things like mechanics, arm strength, field awareness, the ability to look off receivers and check his progressions, footwork, drop-back speed and mechanics,etc...Then , if they don't think he's Qb material, they'll see if he fits there protocol for an Athlete/Wide receiver, then they'll decide to offer or not.
Obviously, one school has done this and decided to offer. I don't see any reason why several more wouldn't follow suit. Unless they get on here and read the REAL recruiting assessment.Gee, I hope for Dereck's sake, they don't know what SEOPS is.lol
Plus, you have 2 reputable coaches in J.K. and D. O. on here saying the kid is the real deal. How many times have you seen either of these guys on here blowing off about how many different kids are D1 when they aren't? Never, unless they are. They work with the kid every day and know the situation better than any of us. They too are football coaches that spend day and night all year around watching and teaching the game of football. They've both coached D1 athletes and knows what it takes.I believe what they say and so should you. Quit trying to disect this situation. He's got looks, offers and official visits. He's D1, get over it, support him and hope he plays for at least more years.

I believe he's definately D1. You don't visit OSU and get a front page picture on Bucknuts.com unless your a D1 recruit. They will monitor him and descide how high of a D1 prospect that he is.

Put this guy on a descent team, where he's not running for his life from the snap of the ball, and he'll show what he can do.

I agree with Siderman.
If you put a very good line in front of Derek, He will make plays happen.
He is one heck of an athlete.

I always find it interesting that people from this area don't really want to see anyone actually succeed. Not sure if it is jealously or just ignorance. I wish every kid from southern ohio could go to college on an academic or athletic scholarship, but that just isn't how it is. We should all support the few that can go on to play at the next level, it helps our area and helps other kids from our area get recruited. When we keep sending kids to colleges and they stay for a week or two and come home it makes coaches stop looking at the area. We need a few more kids like Trevor Walls and Derek Roback to make it at the next level, it might actually help one of the other kids someday.

Look at the big picture folks.

These kids represent all of the high school teams in southern ohio not just the schools they attend.

Walls had talent around him, alot more than what Roback has now. That is obvious. Put Roback under center on the team that Walls led and I guarantee he does just as good.

A true D1 QB recruit should DOMINATE a team like Northwest had last year (no offense).

Part of me says he is really good, part of me says very much over rated.

You wont find too many D1 QB's that didnt go well into the playoffs just about every year as a starter in high school.

bro you are probably the only guy on this site who actually knows whats going on. really it is very very very tough to get into a good d1 school and you are a quarterback not throwing over 2000+ yards a season then you better be scrambling your butt off or you aint gonna make it. CASE CLOSED!!!!

Here's an idea. Why not wait until he graduates to see if he plays Div. 1 football?

I've seen him play 3 times. He is definitely Div. 1 talent.

Marc Sanchez - Starting QB at USC
As a senior, Sanchez was 114-186 for 1746 yards, 16 touchdowns and 2 interceptions

Zac Robinson - Starting QB at Oklahoma State
Threw for 1,456 yards and 15 TD as senior

Two guys who didn't throw for 2000 yards and have had great DI careers.

Why do you guys want Roback to not be a DI prospect so bad? Wouldn't that be good for SEO Football?

I really hope the kid goes on to play D1. I would love to be sitting in the shoe and see him take the field.

Just out of curiosity, what were Roback's stats this year? How many passing yards and how many rushing yards? I dont remember seeing his stats.

I will say this- Roback doesnt have a strong supporting cast at Waverly. Like Siderman said earlier, if he wasnt running for his life out of the pocket he would look much better. But I think when everyone starts thinking with their brain for a minute and not their heart, few D1 Qb's didnt carry a team on their back into the playoffs while in high school.

I would think that Sanchez and Robinson carried their team to the playoffs, even while throwing under 2000 yards for the year. They probably had a stud running back to help them out, which Roback really doesnt have.

Robinson also had 850 yards as a receiver his senior year in high school with 11 receiving TD's. He also had over 1000 yards rushing with 8 more TD's. That would be a total of 34 TD's and 3403 total yards as a senior in high school

So lets dont get too far ahead of ourselves comparing Roback to Robinson or especially Sanchez!

Sanchez threw for almost 3000 yards as a junior, 29 tds and 4 picks. They also won a state Championship his senior year.

I think Roback is by far the best D1 QB talent in southern Ohio, but that is not saying that he will go D1. Alot rests on what type of season and numbers he and Waverly puts up next year.

It's not a matter of "is he a D1 prospect", HE ALREADY HAS A D1 OFFER. I really don't get the debate on here. It is up to Derek if he goes to a D1 school - not anyone on here.

Bleeding Red, Derek did not have the opportunity to accumulate receiving yards unless of course he was to throw to himself, which is about the only thing he wasn't able to accomplish on the field this past season. I think he did lead the team in receiving two years ago as a sophomore. He happens to be the one who caught many of Walls' passes and racked up yards for him. The kid is one heck of an athlete and has another year to get even bigger, stronger, faster, smarter & better. If Waverly can develop any kind of team around him the Tigers will be fun to watch in 2009. Maybe they'll work on a play where he can throw to himself and then you'll be impressed, lol.

Nobody ever said that he wasnt a heck of an athlete. I hope he makes it. He already has a D1 offer, good for him. At least some of his college will be paid for, and going to school is the first priority.

Lets see what type of season Waverly has next year and we will see where his offers are coming from.

All one has to do is read the very first post on this thread to know where the D1 offer is from.

Derek is a fast, strong, and smart kid....I look for him to be very successful with College football,

Alot of the plays where designed rollouts, Waverly had a dominate squad in 06 & 07. Majority of the players besides Kevin Malone and Derek...this past season being their first year starting. Everyone has to remember this was a rebuilding year for Wav. not saying they should have lost to a few of the teams they did.

It's hard to win games when you have to outscore opponents by 35. I can almost garuntee that Waverly's 09 team will be back and a very tough ball club....with only graduating 6 or 7 seniors.

Shouldnt people go to a certain college because of its academics...   Give me a Top 25 Recruited athlete who chooses to go to the United States Military Academy or another military institute(VMI, the Citadel etc...) and I will show you an athlete who cares about more than just whom they play for. I kinda know Derek and he seems like a great guy but wherever he goes he should always remember why he is actually there......education!

I will take a Myron Rolle over any great player, who just goes to the school because of their athletic reputaion, anyday

No disrespect, but I think Waverly had all the competition they needed in the SOC II this past year.

I think if you put him in the SEOL, he is probably the 3rd best QB in that league.

Well if we're all honest with oursleves, he won't be a qb in college, esepecially if he goes to a bigger school. That said if he's gonna be a wr or safety, then who cares what his numbers are? They will be recruiting him on size, speed, and instincts. I would love to see him at Ohio State as a safety or slot receiver maybe.

Bleeding Red:

Which two SEOAL quarterbacks would be ahead of Derek and which DI schools do they have offers from?
