Re: Ironton basketball classic dates and times
Turk the guy on the mic was Rich Gainor(sp). He is an ESPN radio anouncer.
Rich is a "plus" that we brought in for the OakHill games.
On a side note Oak Hill wont be in it next year due to being in a tourney already, but coach Smith did say they loved everything and would like to come back. One good story coach Smith told was he turned on an NBA game once and 4 of the 10 players he had coached, you would think that he would be "untouchable" but he and his coaches were just regular guys.
One last bitof trivia...he was once turned down for a head coaching job at........Ashland.
We were making money on this before we sold any tickets due to the sponsors.
The tourney is in only its second year, and we learned from last year,Im sure we will learn even more this year.Ideas are being talked tossed around.Im sure coach Lafon would love to hear from a fans perspective.Any other ideas or suggestions?

it really surprised me,that more people did not show up for this, with Oak Hill being in it.

Are they going to be able to replace the gym floor with the money made from this? I don't doubt the tourney made some serious dough, but that much?

I agree it was nice having a decent announcer for that OH/Princeton game. Man my ears were hurting after 3 games of the other stuff. Especially that pregame and halftime, ouch! Was surprised they would start announcing Calipari was on his way if he was'nt. Dont say things you cant deliver. I'm no UK fan and it did'nt matter to me but there were many there and I heard many disappointed folks walking out.

Even though Oak Hill won't be there, the plan is getting great match-ups and top ranked teams.

I'm sure we made some "good"money, just not enough for the floor just yet.
One possibility on the floor is to look for a sponsor for it,then name it after them.If we don't get that then I'm sure it will take a few more years of hosting the tourney to get it.
