The superintendent met with the football team and told them that he and the board have decided to move the football program in a different direction.

Also, it sounded as if a good portion of the players are unhappy.

Unhappy - YES...But when asked if anyone was not playing next year ,because of this...Not one player raised his hand! Those who love to play football and love being a Buckeye will play no matter what.

BTW , didnt Ed retire at the end of last season?

That is a very good thing. I'm happy that all of the guys will stick it out.

I hope no other former Nelsonville-York grads from the columbus area are heading down with him. Johnstown has some Carter's up here and would hate to lose any of them!

I wonder what Ed will do for a staff... will he bring anyone with him? I know there are a lot of great coaching candidates in the NY system already. What about Robey? Anyone know what his plans are? I know he is well respected in the area.

Does anyone know if it's official who the coach is? You know how rumors go, I've heard two other names as being the new coach (not official so I don't want to name names).

Good luck to you in the future Coach Boston!

My mistake the head coach did not graduate from NY, but they do have one NY grad on the staff. I've had conversations with his nephew who graduated from NY right? The Carter family talks great about going through school and playing sports in the Nelsonville area.

JohnnieFan,
you are right only one of the staff members are an NY grad. Johnstown's head coach was in school in Nelsonville through elementary school, but his father, Bill Carter, was a preacher and was transferred to Waterford. If you read my screenname and are from the Nelsonville area you'll know who I am and my ties to NY and I loved growing up in Nelsonville and had so many great friends and memories that I'll take with me the rest of my life. Growing up in Nelsonville shaped me into the person that I am today and I really enjoy coming back to "the Ville" as I like to call it! I got to see the school and hear of the changes going on there not too long ago and I can tell there are a lot of great things going on at NY. In my opinion NY will always have success no matter who the coach(es) are. I am sure Coach Boston Sr. (who is credited for building the program and tradition and is in the OHSFCA Hall of Fame), Jr., & Meade all realize that Nelsonville was a great place to coach football, he had great players, and the town has an unique football tradition that in my opinion is 2nd to no one. To me winning TVC championships is great and everyone should set those goals, but the experience that all the kids go through who play from Youth league through High School is an experience that those kids will cherish the rest of their lives, much like I do. I hope that the reasoning for letting Boston, Jr. go is justified and wish the best of luck to whoever the coach may be in future. I cannot see anything that would or could keep the football program from being successful in Nelsonville. Go Bucks!

Just my thoughts guys!

Well since he grew up in Nelsonville, wouldn't that make him a rutter by default? He just moved on to a big fancy school and now he's coming back. So that would just make him an Uptown Rutter. ;-)

Boston out as Buckeyes coach

After six successful football seasons, Nelsonville-York High School and Dave Boston Jr. are parting ways on the gridiron. Boston will not be back as head football coach next season, Nelsonville-York Superintendent Mick McClelland said on Thursday.

Boston is still employed at Nelsonville-York City Schools and will remain as the school’s athletic director, however, McClelland said. Boston has held both positions during his time with the Buckeyes.

“We decided to go in a different direction,” McClelland said. “There’s no big reason. He hasn’t done anything terrible like people are speculating.”

McClelland said there were reasons as to why Boston would not remain in charge of the football program but he wouldn’t go into any specifics.

The move comes as a surprise given Boston’s track record at the school. His six seasons have kept up the winning tradition of Buckeye football. Nelsonville-York has won, on the field, the Tri-Valley Conference Ohio Division title in all six of Boston’s season.

“It has nothing to do with success,” McClelland said. “Wins and losses are nothing for this coach.”

McClelland said the decision was his and it was made this week. He said the search for a new football coach will start as quickly as possible.

McClelland said he expected Boston to stay at the high school as the athletic director.

Boston was just the third coach all-time at Nelsonville-York High School. His father, legendary Dave Boston Sr., was a long-time coach with the Buckeyes. His list of accomplishments included winning the 1981 Division IV State Championship.

While Boston Jr. didn’t have the playoff success, it’s hard to argue with his overall numbers. His career record at Nelsonville-York goes in the books at 42-23 overall and 29-2 in the TVC-Ohio.

The Buckeyes were forced to forfeit two football games after the 2007 season for using an ineligible player. That cost Nelsonville-York the TVC-Ohio title. Because of that, the Buckeyes 6-4 season turned into 4-6.

Without the two forfeits, Boston never had a losing season and his career record would be 44-21 and a staggering 30-1 in the TVC-Ohio. The only TVC-Ohio team to beat Boston on the field was Belpre in ‘07.

Nelsonville-York posted perfect league seasons in 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006 and 2008. The Buckeyes made the playoffs in all five of those seasons.

The Buckeyes lost all five of those game however. Three of them came in heartbreaking fashion: a 9-7 loss to Monroe Central in ‘03, a 35-28 setback to East Knox in ‘05 and a 15-14 loss to Liberty Union last fall.

Boston was a star player for the Buckeyes under his father. As a senior he was named the 1980 Associated Press Co-Player of the year in Class AA. As a running back, Boston rushed for 1,505 yards, passed for 176 yards and had 18 receptions for 176 yards. The Buckeyes were 6-4 that season, and Boston committed to play football at Ohio University.

Boston did not return phone messages seeking comment.
