I really dont see how Coombs is "safe". His defensive players are the sore spot on the entire team. He coached at Colerain where he had great success, but high school and college are 2 different monsters. It is great that he can recruit kids but lets face it: if he cant do much with them when they get there how important is he? And I am sure he will fail in comparison to Urban when it comes to recruiting. As competitive as recruiting is now at this level, most of the position coaches are just the fill in guys anyway. Urban and other head coaches personally try to land the big fish.seofan_via_dublin wrote:IMO, Coombs is safe. He's a fireball, and a great addition when it comes to recruiting, especially where the SW of Ohio is concerned, which has always been a hotbed for traitors to ND and UM.
I can say for a fact, that Urban has told Fickle and Vrable that they are coaching for their jobs on Saturday.
He has asked for more pressure, and more player rotation, and neither coach will commit to it. Vrable was asked why he wasn't rotating in fresh guys and getting more pressure, and his answer amounted to "I don't know".
Fickle as a position coach is in Meyer's good graces. What he has done with a skeleton LB corp and the development of Shazier, is great!
As a defensive play caller though, he's got too much Tressel in him still, and the bend but don't break crap is not what Urban is looking for.

Commbs coaches the corners.
Bradly Roby is one of the best corners in football, leads the country in pass break ups.
Travis Howard is very good, unless he's guarding a deep route.
They have 2 of the top corners in the country coming in next year as freshmen, and Coombs is a big part of that.

I hope Coomb's stays! I love his fire and passion on the sideline, but one thing has got to go and that's the CO DC job, never was a fan of it and hope Urban thins the herd after the season so we have just one man calling the shots.
