I think that depends on how you define "best high school football coach". Is it because they've been there for years, or because they win games? You could also ask who has the most long-lasting impact on his players. Is it because they keep the administration happy? Is it because he set rules and enforces them? That's just too broad a topic, it should be narrowed down.

Also, does it have to be a head coach? Think about all the coaches that were "assistant" coaches that were by far the most respected or well-liked coach on the staff, but for whatever reason, they didn't want to be the head coach.

My choice would be a toss-up between Walter Brungh of Paintsville, and Big Bob Lutz of Ironton.
Both are great coaches and gentlemen as well.

Coach Bob Lutz -- great coach and leaves a lasting impact on his players. But you would have to include his sidekick -- Coach Mike Burcham.

You might think because I'm a Chieftain fan that the obvious choice would be Dale Amyx, but that is just not true. For me it would be a tie between Ron Hinton-Amanda Clearcreek and Bob Lutz-Ironton. These two coaches have consistently produced winning teams, both reaching the highest level of achievement. Sure the Tigers and Aces have had a down year here and there, but it's never long before they are back on top of things. Now there is no doubt that Coach Amyx has had the Chieftains at the top for a while now, but IMHO championships speak volumes. However, after the first Chieftain state football title next fall, things will change

Lutz is the best in this area. Its not the scheme, it's the belief and confidence that his team plays with that impresses me. They're fundamentally sound, they play to beat you as bad as they can, and they never give up (like the Bellaire playoff game a couple years ago). If I could pick a coach for my team, he's it hands down.

And by the way, I really like our coach Triplett also. I see alot of the same qualities in him. The work in the offseason. The toughness.

Very nice man...and teaches you the game...wont let his team give up...has brought a rich tradition to this town...without football...where would Ironton be?
