Talk about making a small community proud! Everything i have heard about this young man has been great. You know when you starp on the #22 jersey at CG you have some big shoes to fill... I think he went above and beyond what Hyland ever accomplished at CG. Whether he set records or not, he has made a longer lasting impression on our town... Congrats again Greg.

hyland was the better football player. bender is good but his smarts went a long way in landing at west point, i believe he scored a 29 on act. you have to have talent and smarts to get to west point, congrats to bender.

I have to agree with ya Rico. Hyland was a better player and could have went a long way, but just didnt have the drive for it.

I have a different view than both of you. These two players are uncomparable. There lines were absolute opposites, as we're the amount carries they had. Hylands line was one of the best the grove had seen in years. While Bender had one of the smallest lines I've ever seen. Bender probably had around 10-12 carries a game average between his jr. and sr. year. Hyland 35+. I don't see how you can even compare them as backs. By stature bender has the athletic edge. He's only 10 pounds lighter and substantially faster and stronger. The powerlifting meets speak for themselves in this area. Also, something that strikes me odd is you say football player, I might be wrong but I don't recall hyland playing much defense and this is Benders recruited area? Finally, I see bender as the better leader and competitor. He won championships, that says a lot.CG_ALUMNI wrote:I have to agree with ya Rico. Im not saying bender is better than hyland because I truly think you can't compare them, but nobody ever seems to support Greg with any facts so I thought this would be great to think about.

Im not at all trying to take anything away from him. I think he is a great student and athlete. He done what was supposed to be done on and off the field and he is defently reaping the benefits! Comparing them is hard, all i said was wear the 22 jersey is a hard thing to follow up on and he done a good job doing it. No, he didnt put up the numbers, but he didnt get the 55 carries a game. Just for the record, Hyland was an above average linebacker even after carrying the ball 45-60 times a game... but I AM NOT TAKING NOTHING AWAY FROM BENDER! I COULDNT BE MORE PROUD OF A YOUNG MAN TO REPRESENT CG.
