Russell defeats Lewis County for the Black Bowl Championship

Post by Devilologist »

Russell pounded out 330 yards of offense and held Lewis Co to 24 yards in the first half. Korzep had 204 yards last night and Messer had 120. Russell started substituting in the 3rd quarter and Lewis scored on the second team with their starters. We ran the ball well last night and the starting defense did very well also.
Darling from Lewis scored on the last offensive play of the game on our second team and made the score appear closer than it was. He ran a 90 yarder with 4 seconds to stay on the clock to close the gap..
Still I am very proud of the Devils and their season.

Congrats to Russell 6th on a great season!

They beat us (Greenup Co. Steelers) in the semifinals on Monday night and i know that beating Lewis County for this championship was the way they wanted to finish it up. They are the best 6th grade football team around here no doubt and they played everyone they could hunt down to play, traveling far away and willing to take on any challenge. Great coaching and classy kids, makes you look forward to playing them again next year.

Thanks JMATT,, your kids at Greenup are also class acts, coaches are Knottheads but the kids are wonderful........... Just joking,,Greg is great ,, Troy is ... well TROY, and the offensive coordinator calling plays (cant remember his name) actually went to Russell and played JFL here..... So I can not say anything about him either....
I would like to say that it is not very often that 2 coaches from opposing teams stand side by side on the same side line while playing against each other and call their plays and watch the kids play.. Talking about a chess match.. we did this at greenup when we played each other and it was insane,,,, letting the coach call a play and then stand there and listen to where the ball is going and allowing the other coach to make adjustments if needed... So basically we (Greg and I) just played a game of chess and let the kids make the plays.. Now it was even and you can not get more even than that.. I have to say that if 2 coaches can stand next to each other and do that, there is alot of respect for both....

Now at the Black Bowl it was great to be able to have prayer in the field of play with every kid and coach from the opposing team, intermingled and holding the other teams hands in prayer. Coaches and coaches, Russell players and Greenup players..... Now that is a class act if I ever saw one......... I would like to thank the coaches for allowing us to do that and it is a pleasure to play great teams....

19-1 with the loss coming to Lewis in the regular season. We won the Shelby Valley Bowl against Belfry,,,,Won the Leslie County Operation Unite Bowl against New Harlan Co. Consolidated, Won the Estill County Choo Choo Bowl against Estill Co, The Orange and Black at Raceland.... Yes it was nice to get that win last night against Lewis,, our kids worked hard to get it.....
If any coach gets anything from this post it would be TRAVEL and play the best team you can even if it means driving 2-3 hours... If you wanna test, then travel and play.. It definitely helped us this year....Even if it means not scheduling close teams you may play at anytime.. Use your season to improve and play everyone you can!!!!!!!
Good luck with next season guys and make plans early for games.....I mean around Feb or March..!!!!

Thanks,,, and also our RB-Messer was hurt also and definitely not 100%, he took a helmet to the tailbone in the first quarter.... Bronson Korzep never missed a beat with a 200 yard rushing performance to have his best rushing game of the year....... It was a dream ending to a great season for sure.....it just happened to be the only team to beat us in the regular season,,,,we waited patiently and knew there was a chance to meet them again in the Black Bowl.. I did not know how the brackets were placed and pondered really hard at the way it might come out after I saw it.... Playing Coal Grove, then Greenup-(only beaten by us in the regular season I think) and then Lewis County.. the team that beat us in regular season...... And looking at the way it played out was the ending of all endings...... I have come to realize that there are no easy games when you get in these Bowl Series'.
If you loose a player in the first round you better make up for it before you play the next day.....
Tough series and played the best out there!!!!!
