I don't think this game will be close, except in the first half. I look for the Lady Spartans to win going away.

Agreed. The Spartans should get back on track and stay undefeated in the Ohio division. Go Spartans!

Sounds like a very good and entertaining game. Girls on both sides must have given a solid effort. Good job ladies!

Why did the coach sit out the senior athletes for the entire first half during last night's TVC game against Vinton Co.? You know the ones that have been there all four years? The ones that were there to enable Alex to have a varsity team during their freshman year otherwise there would not have been enough players to even have a varsity team. Finally during these senior girls' sophomore year, there was a jv team. The varsity was varsity and the jv was jv. However, I remember last year, the second year for a jv team, he would sit the older girls out and play girls from the JV team during the varsity time which had never happened in the previous year. The girls that he sat out have been leaders and have worked hard their entire high school career on varsity and this is the kind of respect that they get from their coach? The way that these girls are treated is cause for them not to have the heart to play. Maybe that is what is going on with this Alex team right now. Has anyone heard what the intentions of the coaching tactics are? It's sad that these girls are unable to enjoy the game because they have to deal with mentality issues from their coach. I have heard, too, that the coach constantly throws the volleyball championship in their faces. Any thoughts on this topic?
Re: Vinton County @ Alexander 1/12/09
It's certainly very telling when it says in the Messenger about the game last night "Smith, prior to her second stint when she checked in with Raines, played just 1:01 in the first half after starter Morgan Grinstead picked up her fourth foul. Her short first-half run ended with a turnover, a heated discussion with Alexander coach Denton Guthrie on the sidelines, and tears".
How long did the girls have to run after losing to Waterford and Federal Hocking? It's no wonder some of the girls didn't go out for the team this year.

It was said that the girls had to run so much after the Waterford game on Wednesday that by Saturday morning their legs still felt like rubber. Wouldn't you think that as a coach you'd want to work on shooting and plays? The Alex coach stated (according the the messenger article) that the team has a long laundry list of injuries that they are going through. If this is the case, why run them so much? Wouldn't that make the injuries worse? Again, what is he thinking?

SteelyDan your comment is just sad. Trouble in paradise. I thought FH fans has more class.

Sad? Just an observation, based on what was written in the paper. You certainly don't have to like it, that is your perogative.
It is very unfortunate that this entire scene had to be played out in public, but that was the coach's decision, and with it, will come the criticism and questions. I'm not the one on here airing the dirty laundry. Maybe you ought to be questioning the Alexander posters who posted the information in this thread.
FH fans seem to be held to a very high standard when it comes to saying anything on this website. Anytime anything gets posted that can be remotely construed as critical, or a "dig", people cry foul. That's OK, we will all try to do better to meet the higher standard that I guess that we must meet.
Oh, and that is "have" more class, not "has".......

But ya gotta be happy with the Messenger coverage, right? You all got a pic and everything!
Yea, I think Alex fans can address this with the coach. Shouldnt have played out in public. But taking delight in it is sad, no matter who you root for.
Thanks for the editing on my typo. Glad to know you are perfect.

Whatever the reasoning...Coach Guthrie has won sectionals, districts and regionals...He has won the TVC-Ohio division crown a couple of times...I'm going to trust his instinct and his decision making. It was tough love for some of the girls, but it seems like they came out in the 2nd half fired up and dominated. They are undefeated in league play and have an impressive record thus far. He probably felt it was time for a wake up call after a two game set back...mission accomplished!

The game of basketball can teach us so many lessons...
Congrats to the Alexander Lady Spartans on a nice win!
Amidst the press coverage, SEO Preps postings, the wins, and the losses, remember this...You have made great friends, the coaches, parents, teachers, and fans care about you, and high school will be over before you know it...Enjoy every moment...even the REALLY HARD and CONFUSING times...

Fine. I will give him that but there is no excuse for his behavior most times - what years did he accomplish these titles?

Well, we went to the state and won the league only two years ago. My, how quickly people forget!
