who was a better coach??? Mantell, Blackston, Hinton???? if you think any other coaches were better then all three from wellston state there name and years they coached.
Larry Blackstone never won any TVC titles. The closest he got was in '99 when Wellston lost to VC week 10 26-14. Larry coached Wellston for 4 seasons '96-'99 and went 23-17. Dave Lucas won the two TVC titles in '01 and '02 with loaded teams. Dave coached Wellston for 3 seasons '00-'02 and went 22-8.
When Lucas was here Wellston had the best talent Wellston had seen in a long time.IMO should have won even more games than they did.Wellston could score on anyone ,but couldnt stop anyone either.NO DEFENSE!The offense was simple give it to Young 30 times Mayes 10 times. With those two it worked .However good teams like Jackson & Waverly they contained them enough to beat the Rockets and their swiss cheese defense that the Lucas's run.

I agree. Wellston should have been 10-0 in '01 and '02 with deep playoff runs at least.
Have to go with an old-timer on this one. Ben Wilson.
Wilson guided the Rockets for four seasons, 1951 through 1955. In the SEOAL only, Wellston went 7-0-0, 2-3-1, 6-1-0 and 6-1-0. Wellston's only league losses in 54 and 55 were to Gene Slaughter's Jackson teams on Thanksgiving Day. That's 21-5-1 in the SEOAL back when it was tougher to win in that league.
His 1951 team was undefeated (10-0-0), 1953 (9-1-0) and 1954 (8-1-0) which included seven straight shut-out victories. Those were the days when an really big time SEOAL game would draw crowds of over 4000.
Wilson went on to win at Warren HS and eventually ended up as head coach at Wichita State where he perished in a tragic airplane crash along with many of his players in 1970.
As far a scoaching Jody Michaels could flat out coach. Some other issues may be distracting but coaching he was great.
Joe malmisur or something close to that spelling. Had a brief but successful stint at Wellston and went on the AD at Youngstown State. I beleive he hired a young coach named Jim Tressel.
