How is the Irvin kid questionmark?

He's got great genetics - I know that! I caught his uncle ( I believe Jason is his uncle anyway) and that guy could freakin bring the heat ... We were a pretty good team heading into the 1993 season - but Jason Irvin transfered from Meigs (through Tri-County) and basically shocked not only me (who had to catch him in the gym before the season) but the entire team ... and then the entire Athens fan base throughout the season.

You have to immagine seeing this kid come into an early season baseball practice - for the first time at Athens - (which had a team stacked with seniors who had played together since we were 10) sporting a Tri-County Vocational school jacket, a John Deer hat and to be honest with ya, he may have even had blue-jeans on ... After a good 30 minutes of ridicule & mean jokes by my fellow teamates, Irvin tells Gibby he can pitch - which caused some more snickering amongst the returning players ....... Being a catcher yourself questionmark, you probably remember how hard it is to really see the ball if your catching pitchers inside the gymnasium right? Well, after about 10 or so warm-up pitches, Irvin goes and ahead and cuts-it-loose ... Lets just say all the jokes and laughter over the Tri-County jacket came to a sudden halt after Jason repeatedly cracked my mit with 84-85 MPH fastballs!

It appeared as if he really didn't warm-up, he didn't stretch out much, and only threw about 10 or so tosses to me before I got down behind the plate ... BUT he was still able to let loose and nearly knock me on my rear end with an over-powering heater that moved more than any fastball I had ever seen or caught.

Needless to say - to make a long story short - we had a pretty good pitcher going into the season with Trevor Douglas ... But adding Irvin - the 'farm boy' from Meigs - really took us to another level and ended up helping us bring home an SEOAL championship.

I know all them Irvin & Vanest fellas from Southeastern Ohio are tough, hard working farm boys ... but After seeing what Jason could on the mound without any real coaching (until he came to Athens) tells me that family has some real good genetics somewhere in the bloodline. Hopefully, your #13 there above has inherited some of those good traits ... If so, I'm feeling pretty good about the 'Dogs future on the diamond ...

A (13-3) record is pretty good man, nice job teaching the boys how to win ... I know Athens losses a ton of talent from this years team - but just like it was when I was in school - the Bulldogs don't rebuild ..... we reload when it comes to the small ball.

Ryan is the real deal...
He throws smoke like Jason, and has a great off-speed ball to compliment...

He also has Jason working with him everyday he can, and you can tell a difference...
Ryan will be joining Gibby and the Varsity guys for the rest of the season, so it will be good for him to see some varsity games...

Yes, this squad this year was great, tons of talent from top to bottom, with some really good young talented pitchers ...Along with Ervin (Soph), Keegan Shaw (Soph), Alex Staron (Fresh), Brandon Witham (Fresh), Skylar Swartzel (Fresh)... add in a solid young catcher who smacks the ball Tanner Wood (Fresh) ...

The Future of Athens Baseball is bright 93....

Yea, well Galia is also known as Gallia Academy but you don't see anyone complaining there...
We all know that Nelsonville is also NY...not that big of a deal...

Thats some good stuff 93 but I have to clear some things up. Ryan is my cousin and the last name is Ervin. I have known you for 17 yrs now and you still don't know how to spell my last name:) Thats a pretty good job at remebering all that stuff from so long ago. It really surprises me that you say the senior class OF "93" didn't remeber me any better from me beating you all as a soph at Meigs. Actually, when I first met Gibby I introduced myself shaking his hand and while still shaking his hand reminded him that I beat you last year at Meigs. Gibby rsponded quickly with "well your the team". Yes I did wear blue jeans to the gym but had shorts underneath. The John Deere hat stuck with me to college also with the coaches nicknameing me John Deere my freshman year. Those were good times man. As far as Ryan is concerned, hes good but just needs a little work. We are working on some things to get him there and in my opinion he will get there. Plus hes gonna do it wearing my number LUCKY 13;)
