The freshman that hit the home run was smaller than the bat she was using but in fastpitch if you hit it right you can clear the fence easily. The pitcher for Poland (sophomore) is much faster than Lakewood's pitcher (Junior) but the faster it comes in the faster it can go out which is what happened in the one instance today. Congrats to the Lady Lancers !!!!!

FOS: You know, perhaps better than I, that the art of pitching, whether baseball or softball is more about location, movement, and keeping hitters off balance than just simply speed.

In baseball, pitchers who have been blessed with a lightning bolt for an arm can still have successful careers if they do all those things. I am thinking of the Jamie Moyer(whose fastball may not be up to batting practice speed) and Greg Maddux (future HOFer) as classic examples.

The pitchers who have caused our girls the most problems the past few years are those who velocity pitches have movement (rise or drop) combined with a well concealed change up that they can throw for strikes. Some girls seem to be under the delusion that you have to knock 10-15 mph off your fastball to have an effective changeup, but IMO the effectiveness comes from the ability to throw with the same motion and only take maybe 5-8 mph off.

You get a batter way out ahead of the pitch, and even if she hits it, it wont be hard.

Couldn't have said it better myself 4ever. Both pitcher's in this year's game will be back next year so we'll see how DII shapes up. I don't believe Lakewood would go back down to DIII again. Licking county up here really represents and is a great all around county for sports in the state of Ohio, both boys and girls.
