Week Two: Logan AT Teays Valley

Post by loganlocos »

Logan will travel to Teays Valley for the first time looking for a better performance than the one they put on against the Vikings last season.

Both teams had impressive performances last week, with TV overwhelming a traditionally strong Westfall team away from home and Logan pushing Lancaster to double-overtime before falling short against the Gales on a two-point conversion run.

The Vikings have a new head coach, and their offense seems a little less reliant on the wing-t but still built around running the football. Logan was embarrassed last season against the Vikings in what was probably their worst display of an otherwise strong rebound season.

For Logan, I hope that a near win over Lancaster doesn't become the highlight of the season. After watching the Chiefs last week, I got a glimpse of how good this team CAN be. And it's pretty good. But they have to refuse accept last week's result as a "moral victory." They need to let the frustration of last week fuel them. If they do that, I think the sky is the limit for this group.

Let's hear it.

This is a hard game to judge,at first I thought Logan would win easy, then I saw where Teays clubbed Westfall 49-0.Don't know if Teays is that much improved or Westfall is that bad.Probably a little bit of both I would imagine.Logan's offense is impressive as long as Little is there and he gets protection. The defense on the other hand is a worry, they got to tighten up if they want to be better than last year.Lancaster moved the ball way too easy. Like to see some improvement there this week.

Big difference in opponents. Logan was impressive against the Gales and had them on the ropes most of the game. Logan has a serious pass game that gave Lancaster fits and I expect to see a strong Logan run game against lesser programs now. Westfall is down this year and TV isn't looking at a great year. They will struggle. Last year Logan limped into the game missing I believe 16 players injured in the brutal opener with Lancaster, including their starting QB. Even at that, they played TV tight. This year I expect to see a Logan win. My hope is that they turn it loose again and light up the scoreboard while playing better D vs. TV than they did against the Power run attack of the Gales. No way TV measures up to Lancaster.

Any injuries for Logan ?

If the Chiefs play like they did against Lancaster, you can bank on a big W. Paladin, I think there was only one player shook-un up in the Gale game, but I believe he came back in. Nothing serious that I know of from my source. I liked that the Chiefs only had two or three penalties all night as well. I hope they can keep them low all season. GO CHIEFS!!!

I would agree with your friends in regard to Westfall. I got a chance to see that game on film, and WF is a shadow of their former self. 3rd coach in 3 years. Moving from a pass-first spread to the Wing-T. Lots of youth. Etc.

However, I also know TV scrimmaged Big Walnut and faired very well. Big Nut is a great program coming back up, and had a great week one win over Mansfield (a 2013 playoff team in D2). BW is very good.

TV reminds me a lot of Logan in 2007-ish. They have a very good backs, athletic receivers, and a QB who can move around the pocket and make throws. Most importantly, their offensive line is big, athletic, and experienced.

The tailback is big (6-1, 185) and elusive, and a great open field runner. He could play wing-back for Lancaster with his ability. Logan will have to perform well on defense - hold their own up front with the linebackers running to the ball and making plays consistently.

Defense is a bit more of a question mark for TV, but more because I couldn't really judge them based on Westfall. Westfall is just not very good. TV completely dominated up front and their backers were free to make plays. Westfall rarely tried to pass, and when they did, the QB had to throw off his back foot because of pressure. But the D-line is also experienced.

New coach at TV. He has a nice team. They look like a team that could be competitive in the MSL, but I'll know more after I see them against Logan on Friday.

If TV is as good as that 2007 Logan team, this Logan team is in huge trouble.Be nice to see how they do against them this year without so many injuries. No excuses this year either they get it done or they don't,defense needs to step up and make a statement, they been subpar all year so far, not just Lancaster either.

I think the Purple has momentum, even after the loss (and know I don't believe in moral victories) the kids know they belong, let one slip out of their hands, and understand how to prevent it in future.

So despite the loss Logan clearly shaping up to be a force and the kids understand it, get it and will feed off of it and I believe wake up next Saturday morning staring at 1-1 record.

Rooting for the SEOAL in this one.

TV is top heavy playing mostly D-IV & V teams. Big Nut is a shell of itself. They are O.K. but not great. Mansfield will struggle. Lost too much. TV faces LOgan, Chilli, Logan Elm, Circleville, Amanda & Liberty Union, all tough games for them. TV is a game Logan should win and maybe easily. Again, I don't expect TV to measure up to Lancaster and Logan ate them alive with the pass. Expect the same for TV. Now add in a power run game and Logan should be in commnad from the out set. The question, rightly is, will the D improve over the brutal run game Lancaster put to them. Again, I expect Logan to learn from the Lancaster game and see a better game from the D.

I still see only better teams from Zanesville and maybe Jackson ( who is still playing the weak weenie schedule, so sizing them up is hard to do ) on the LOgan schedule. Don't see Loudonville or N-Y as being real good this year. I had expected Lancaster to be much stronger, but the Chiefs made it look easy and competitive most of the game. Wrong about Lancaster ( but expect them to do O.K. in the OCC).

Had thought 6-4, but 7-3 doable and maybe better than that. No injuries will help.

Thanks for the post - now I know to take TV in the picks contest.

News flash: West Jefferson, Bishop Ready, Wheelersburg, Ironton, Logan, Portsmouth is a weenie schedule.

The Chiefs are going to be hard to beat imo. I just hope the injury bug stays away.

Poor old doubleplay. Jackson playing Wellston and Waverly the 1st two games tells you nothing. NOTHING ! Portsmouth may be .500 this year. Logan has a chance to be good. But Ironton ? They'll struggle this year. Burg is pretty good, Ready is not the Ready of old and West Jeff should win this year but aren't world beaters. Living in the past and playing smaller teams with limited upsides this year isn't healthy. Lancaster & Zanesville are the top teams on Logan's schedule. Loudonville may push Logan. Jackson -- maybe. But the schedule won't push Jackson much, as it usualy doesn't . Same old, same old.

You knock SE Ohio teams for not going out of the area to schedule good teams. Jackson goes out and schedules two pretty good programs - Ready and West Jeff - and you are still bashing them for a weak schedule. As for Jackson's game against Wellston, that's a county rivalry and a game that will always be played.

I'm not sure I'd be throwing stones as a Logan fan. There are a lot of folks who would consider Logan's schedule as weak for a D2 school.

Early week prediction:

Chiefs 35

TV 21

Defense must start to improve or we will be in trouble if the offence stalls!

I didn't see any stats on this thread or the Lancaster thread about offensive and defensive stats in the Chiefs first game.

Does Locos or someone else have rushing/passing yards; passing attempts, etc?

From some of the posts above and on the Lancaster thread it seemed like there was a good bit of passing by Logan. Was curious as to the offensive yardage breakdown and passing attempts.

Doubleplay -

You can find all of Logan's stats each week on loganfootball.com. I usually have them up on Saturday or Sunday. Occasionally if "real life" gets in the way I won't have them up until Monday.

Logan was DEFINITELY pass happy against Lancaster, but I know the plan is to have better balance in 2014. I think the coaches believed, correctly, that Lancaster was very strong against the run and not good in pass coverage.

Logan ran 60 plays, running 18 times (including sacks/pressures).

Logan gained 353 yards, with 315 coming via the aerial route.

Lane Little completed 23 of 40 passes for 306 yards (4TDs, 1 INT). Little also caught a 9-yard pass from Dean Jordan on a halfback option.

Little was the team's leading rusher with 39 yards on 8 carries.

Lancaster ran 79 plays, with 71 rushing plays (including sacks/pressures).

Lancaster gained 541 yards, 487 coming on the ground.

Lancaster had three rushers gain 100+ yards led by Jerry King (21 car., 163 yards, 2 TDs).

Lancaster's numbers are similar to what they've done just about every season against Logan. Considering the game went to double overtime (40 extra yards) and the fact that Lancaster's starters played all 4 quarters (instead of 3 like the last 2-4 years), Logan's defense was definitely improved.

Thank Locos for the information and where to find it every week from here on out.

Interesting stuff, from watching a few of their games last year, and the Logan O-line, I would have never guessed they would throw that much, but sounds like it was a good game plan and well executed by the kids.

Not too sure lol that I am excited about the Chieftains having such success in the passing game though lol...

Good luck to the SEOAL Chieftains against TV this week.
