Re: Hillsboro High School Varsity Shootout
I really believe these shootouts and summer basketball is why the quality of basketball has gone down hill over the years. ADD AAU as well.
Nobody works on their game anymore. These things cause bad defense (no fouls reported so they can hack all day long), cause bad offense, NBA one on one , and hardly ever shoot free throws. I know I know, I will probably take a hit for saying this but I truly believe basketball was really bad this year and continues to get worse!! No fundamentals anymore.

Re: Hillsboro High School Varsity Shootout
I assure you Regulator that free throws will be shot and if players decide to play one on one NBA style, then it would be the coach's responsibility to handle that situation. This is the 3rd year for our shootout and I can't remember any problems with hacking or bad defense. The quality of play has been very good. The Sudden Victory Tournament (first team to score 2 points wins) teaches teams and players to value every possession and puts each team and coach in a do or die situation.
Coaches have 10 days to work with their teams as a group. These shootouts are great ways to lay the foundation for next year's season. I'm not going to argue that fundamentals seem to be disappearing, but that has more to do with the evolution of today's video game systems than coaching. Many kids would rather play video games than work on their real games.
Attendance is free. I encourage you to make the trip and you will see some quality basketball.

I will agree with the video game epidemic! But I still believe coaches can use those ten day
or more
on fundamentals!!
Pure Shooters are gone!! Games in High School are now in the 30's!!! and it is not because of stalling!!!
Some teams struggle to score 6 points in a quarter!!

Re: Hillsboro High School Varsity Shootout
WOW! So I guess summer basketball leagues, shootouts and AAU should just be eliminated. Especially since none of these qualify as "working on your game". The generation of kids is different it has nothing to do with these things. Summer basketball has been around forever! and AAU has been around awhile as well. I think being selective about AAU programs or shootouts would solve these issues you speak of. I have seen the Hillsboro shootout and it is ran well and would be beneficial for any High School team to take part in. I would agree kids do not work as hard and shooters are becoming fewer, but I do not see the logic in relating it to Summer basketball and AAU.Regulator wrote:I really believe these shootouts and summer basketball is why the quality of basketball has gone down hill over the years. I agree Truth, and would like to add, getting shots up is what makes you a shooter not 50/day but 500. Dribbling drills every day in the summer etc, but AAU and Summer league have nothing to do with the quality of basketball, it keeps a ball in their hands at least, props to Hillsboro for letting coaches evaluate what they have, thanks to Regulator for his opinion, it allows for good discussion.

Re: Hillsboro High School Varsity Shootout
Seriously, I wonder if playing basketball the year around is good for the kids. Back in the dark ages, when I played, we worked hard on basketball from October through tournament competition. But, once you lost in the tournament, you turned in your uniform, and basketball was over until the next season. We (nearly) all played baseball and/or track and some played football in the fall. I just don't know that I am in favor of making it a year-round sport.

Re: Hillsboro High School Varsity Shootout
So far on this thread about a shootout, we've had talks about basketball being worse because of shootouts like this and basketball being emphasized too much. Not sure what people want. I would think that playing more can only be a good thing.
