Honestly, this reflects bad on the state and makes Ohio look ignorant to the rest of the country. I expect this kind of bull**** in Mississippi or Alabama. The people in the south almost have a sense of pride in being stupid. However, this is the great state of Ohio. When will the religious nutbags ever learn? Public school is about teaching FACTS to the youth in this country. If you want your child to learn about superstition and fairy tales, send them to private school or church. The Springboro, Ohio, school board is currently considering a proposal that would allow the district to teach creationism, despite objections from the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) and local parents.
The issue, which was discussed at Thursday night’s board meeting, is part of a larger proposal that would open up a variety of controversial issues for classroom discussion. According to the proposal, “[s]ex education, legalization of drugs, evolution/creation, pro-life/abortion, contraception/abstinence, conservatism/liberalism, politics, gun rights, global warming and climate change and sustainable development†would be considered suitable classroom topics, reports local news outlet WHIO-TV.
The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) has sent a letter asking the district to drop the proposal that would “advance creationism in the classroom."
“When public schools teach their preferred religious ideology as fact, it sends a message that the school supports one religion over all others. This threatens the religious freedom of everyone,†ACLU of Ohio staff attorney Drew Dennis said in the letter.
The letter also noted the district's unsuccessful proposal to teach creationism in 2011. That plan was scrapped due to public pressure.
According to the Dayton Daily News, parents who attended the school board meeting urged officials to abandon the new proposal.
“We’re being defined by our issues and not our accomplishments,†said Lynn Greenberg, a local parent who feels the district's attempts to teach creationism distracts from students’ education.
However, school board member Jim Rigano told the outlet that he thought teaching creationism would help the district “ensure we’re not indoctrinating one point of view or another.â€
The board will vote on the proposal in early June, reports local outlet WKRC-TV.

Actually the title of this thread and the first line of the article is very misleading. The district does not want to use it as "teaching". They want it to be included as a debate item along with the other topics. That is a huge difference of the districts plans, and the way the article and the title is written.

Re: Springsboro school district considers teaching Creationi
There is NO debate between evolution and creationism. One theory is accepted by 99.9% of scientists. The other theory is a fairy tale based on religious dogma. It's a false equivalency, and creationism shouldn't be given equal standing to evolution in public schools.Runner wrote:Actually the title of this thread and the first line of the article is very misleading. I cannot see evolutionism. It must be invisible. Therefore it seems to be a fairy tale.

I'm really glad all of the people of The Great State Of Ohio aren't as negative of the people of the south as you are. I'm not discussing this subject of religion, but I am voicing my opinion on your post. First of all, Ohio doesn't look ignorant to the rest of the country, only those people who post ignorant things, such as how stupid other states are. Alabama has had some of the most renowned scientists, educators and inventors in our country. I'll bet you didn't think your peanut butter sandwich was stupid when mommy fixed it for you. (look it up) By the way Hello to all my SEOP's Buddys from grndma1 in sunny Alabama.Daniel Larusso wrote:http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/05/2 ... f=politicsHonestly, this reflects bad on the state and makes Ohio look ignorant to the rest of the country. They looked "IGNORANT" enough to produce a LOCAL outcry from parents in Springboro, both now and back in 2011. If you are looking for a problem, just look at the religious nutbags who have no problem sacrificing education in addition to govt in this country. "Religion" is the dumbing down of America.
