What happened to the AP Polls
What happened to the AP Polls
Don't get me wrong, I love PFloyd's rankings, but I also like to see where local teams stack up with the rest of the state. I will say, though, PFloyd> AP Poll, for the record...

The word is they aren’t being done due to the expansion from four to seven divisions.

That’s what I had heard as well. It makes sense since it’s just even more to try to keep up on with the more divisions.formerfcfan wrote: Thu Feb 06, 2025 12:23 pm The word is they aren’t being done due to the expansion from four to seven divisions.

Re: What happened to the AP Polls
... I always liked the AP rankings to compare where I had teams ranked vs the AP guys ... it was always an indication to me that in many cases the AP folks had no clue LOL - just saying ... but I too like to see how the SE District teams are viewed in comparison to teams across the state ... if the AP - in my mind - was clueless in KNOWING the teams with 4 divisions ... going to 7 would make them look even more clueless due to HAVING to have seen, KNOW the teams in 7 divisions ... I can see where they would lose credibility LOL and have to actually know about teams throughout the state ...OVC wrote: Thu Feb 06, 2025 12:09 pm Don't get me wrong, I love PFloyd's rankings, but I also like to see where local teams stack up with the rest of the state. Re: What happened to the AP Polls
I mean, it’s still less than 1% of the schools in the state winning a title. It’s not like they’re handing out state titles like candy.
Re: What happened to the AP Polls
Still a lot more tournaments games every year for them to collect money
Re: What happened to the AP Polls
There are 9 more state tournament games. There are 3 less overall tournament games. But bringing in more money, so what? That doesn’t change the fact that it also benefits more kids with the experience WITHOUT really compromising any competitive integrity. Ohio has one of the lowest percentages of champions in all sports in the country.LoyalOak wrote: Thu Feb 06, 2025 2:19 pmStill a lot more tournaments games every year for them to collect money

You’re right. I just wish more of the money somehow benefited these schools.enigmaax wrote: Thu Feb 06, 2025 3:18 pmThere are 9 more state tournament games. There are 3 less overall tournament games. Re: What happened to the AP Polls
There are 9 more Final Four games this year than in the past (12 games to 21 games). But there is a bigger increase in the regional tourament. There are going to be an additional 36 regional games (semis & finals) this year than in the past (48 games increased to 84 games). Now guess who gets all the money from regional and Final Four games. You guessed it ..... the OHSAA.
Anybody that thinks this is about kids and providing more opportunities is completely naive of how big-business works. OHSAA is big business. If you don't believe me then look at their yearly carryover and their yearly salaries.
If you believe moving to 7 divisioin was about kids then answer this question. If the additional 45 games were not going to make any profit or cost the OHSAA money, would they have still expanded to 7 divisions? LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I don’t dispute the financial element. It is okay for an entity that relies on money to operate to, get this, find ways to make money.ItsMyOpinion wrote: Thu Feb 06, 2025 5:07 pm There are 9 more Final Four games this year than in the past (12 games to 21 games). Money as the primary motivator does not negate the many additional benefits to kids. Fincanical benefits, competitive benefits…what is the problem?

Re: What happened to the AP Polls
I'm not sure their are competitive benefits to adding 7 divisions. I'm a little old-school and don't believe in the "Everybody Gets a Trophy" culture. I understand that is what people want today but I don't believe you water things down just so people can feel good about themself.
Re: What happened to the AP Polls
Again, less than 1% of schools will win a state championship. That’s still like the 3rd lowest percentage of any state in the country. It isn’t watered down and it isn’t “everybody gets a trophy.” That line is either intellectually lazy, dishonest, or just flat stupid.ItsMyOpinion wrote: Thu Feb 06, 2025 9:12 pm I'm not sure their are competitive benefits to adding 7 divisions. In fact, far less kids will get trophies now because there are none of those 3-team sectional brackets/championships any more.

Division I, Division ll and Division lll were some pretty good times. Then came the specialty schools and the private schools everywhere .ItsMyOpinion wrote: Thu Feb 06, 2025 9:12 pm I'm not sure their are competitive benefits to adding 7 divisions. Can you imagine only one division?
what would be sweet at the end all the 7 division champs played eachother
D1 had a 1st rd bye
D2 vs D7
D3 vs D6
D4 vs D5
get Champs of Champs

I dislike the expansion to seven divisions, greatly. That said, you are correct.enigmaax wrote: Thu Feb 06, 2025 9:16 pmAgain, less than 1% of schools will win a state championship. Ohio’s future population projections, along with the implementation of the Competitive Balance Proposal, has put four divisions of ~800 teams at odds with parity in enrollment.
2023-24
Division IV: x-121
Division III: 122-191 (range: 69)
Division II: 193-345 (range: 152)
Division I: 346-1300 (range: 954)
2024-25
Division VII: x-97
Division VI: 98-145 (range: 47)
Division V: 146-197 (range: 51)
Division IV: 198-276 (range: 78)
Division III: 277-447 (range: 170)
Division II: 448-624 (range: 176)
Division I: 625-1378 (range: 753)
An example of a team that got hosed under the previous division breakdowns would be Meigs. 193 = D2 last year, 202 = D4 this year.

Re: What happened to the AP Polls
Everybody is entitled to their own opinion and this topic is no different. As I and most of my peers believe, you will see a number of teams winning district, regional and even state titles that are not nearly as good as teams winning those titles as in the past. But moving to 7 divisions will award more championships and more people will feel good about that. If people do not believe that is "Watered Down" and do not believe that mentality buys into the "Everybody gets a Trophy" mentality, that is their right. Just as I have the right to bellieve it does and if people don't believe like I do then it is either "intellectually lazy, dishonest or just flat stupid." LOL!
